Ah, Kansas City. I never thought I would be so glad to see the DH spot in the lineup. Speaking of which, here's your lineup!
Brett Gardner CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Vernon Wells LF
Travis Hafner DH
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Jayson Nix SS
Lyle Overbay 1B
Chris Nelson 3B
Chris Stewart C
RHP Phil Hughes
Notes:
-- Eduardo Nunez isn't in the lineup again--BUT he did take BP and said he feels fine. He hopes he can play tomorrow.
-- David Robertson and Mariano Rivera are unavailable for tonight's game. I would imagine Preston Claiborne is unavailable as well.
-- Last night the Yankees made a trade with the Chicago Cubs. They received SS Alberto Gonzalez in exchange for cash. Does the name Alberto Gonzalez sound familiar? He was a part of the Randy Johnson deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks years ago. He'll start in Triple-A since he's not on the 40-man roster.
-- Curtis Granderson played right field last night for Scranton. Brian Cashman revealed that he wanted to try Granderson in RF and LF because Joe Girardi came to him, raving about Brett Gardner's defense in CF.
-- Speaking of Joe Girardi, Girardi is trying to notch his 500th win as the manager of the New York Yankees.
-- Robinson Cano had his 1,500th career hit yesterday vs. the Colorado Rockies and before receiving the real ball, Steve Donahue gave him a dummy ball. What was on the dummy ball? "1500: Hopper through the infield."
The one player who has totally stunned me has been Overbay. Had no idea he could do this
ReplyDeleteOverbay's done a fine job. He's always been a superb defender but he hasn't been a regular for a couple of years. He's definitely been a pleasant surprise as he's crushed RHP and had some timely hits.
ReplyDeleteJust read that David Adams is coming up on Wednesday. Either Francisco or Nelson will be cut. This is a good opportunity for Adams, hope he does well.
ReplyDeleteThat's great news and if you believe McCarron's source, they will give him the chance to start everyday. I really like Adams and hope the Yanks give him the shot. He's had such bad luck in his pro career and would have been up a week or more ago if not for the ST roster move.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what happens if Nelson plays well the next few days. He's been playing better recently with 5 hits in his last 13 ABs after starting 0 for 10.
Adams can play though. He's a line-drive machine with good strikezone awareness. He also offers versatility as he can play 3B, 2B and 1B. He;s played the last few games at 1B in Scranton so he can play 1B vs LHP to give Overbay a rest. He hits over .300 vs LHP and RHP but has more power vs LHP. This yr he's .333 with a .915 OPS vs LHP which is right in line with his career mark. I'm anxious to see him play every day because I believe he could surprise a lot of people and become a solid MLB player
fishjam, I would think with Grandy and Adams coming up soon both Francisco and Nelson will be cut.
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree Doug. I believe they can send Nelson to the minors which would be good with all the Yankee 3B being injury prone.
ReplyDeleteWhat's going to be interesting is which OF sits when Grandy returns. Vs LHP its no problem but vs RHP, one of Wells or the 3 lefties will have to sit. Guess they use it to rest someone on a revolving basis.
fishjam, I think Wells and Ichiro hit LHP better, but the revolving thing makes sense. Bottom line is the team is better. Nuny and Youk will also help when they return. This team will only get stronger as the injured players return.
ReplyDeleteWith Ichiro and Wells playing well I wonder if Gardner loses a significant amount of time. With him not stealing bases his defense is his only real value. I don't want to see Wells lose much time because with his new swing mechanics I do not think his performance is much of a fluke.
