EDIT: The deal is being reported by MLB Trade Rumors as a one year deal. worth $2.5 million.
The New York Yankees have signed outfielder Chris Young to be their fourth outfielder for the 2015 season. No terms for the deal have been announced but word is that the deal is done pending a physical. My guess would be a one year deal worth no more than $5 million, probably closer to $3 million, so stay tuned for all the details.
I didn't comment on this for awhile, because I wasn't sure how I felt. I was trying to come up with a downside to this and couldn't until I read that he could earn up to $5 million in incentives. Now I think this is a horrible move. It set in motion a chain reaction that will accomplish 2 things. Block our prospects from getting any kind of a chance to make an impact, and cost the Yankees an additional $5 million while doing so.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the incentives are, but chances are if he hits them it would mean good things for the team. It's not like he'll make all $5 million while sucking.
DeleteI'm sure the incentives are going to be plate appearances, but what appearances are those going to be? Are they going to be the Arizona Diamondback/New York Yankee production level? Or is he going to hit like he did with the A's/Mets? I hope he hits well, because we all know that this signing blocks Refsnyder for another year.
DeleteI read that the incentives could only bring the deal to a little over $6 million (like $6.25 million or something to that effect) so the incentives are less than $4 million.
ReplyDeleteAlso I am not sure how signing a fourth outfielder stops Refsnyder. The only player that blocks Ref is if the team signs a third baseman (Headley) which allows Prado to play 2B or if the team signs a second baseman which leaves Prado at 3B.
I don't see any scenario where the Yankees don't sign a third baseman. We all know they don't think Arod can play everyday. They're going to sign either Sandoval or Headley. Most likely Headley. That leaves Prado playing second base, and Refsnyder in AAA. Unless Refsnyder hits .700 with 10 homeruns in spring training, he's slated for the minors.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Rsfsy will be on the list for the farm teams. With him at 2nd it let's Prado play 2nd, 3rd, SS, and the outfield. I think he plays 1st base also, but Headly (if resigned) will play 3rd and 1st. But having a regular 2nd baseman is the good thing, because who is going to cover for 3rd, 1st and the outfield othere than Prado and Headley. This would make the team, "more user friendly shall we say"! All three of them will play most of the games anyway, our team is very old and injurys happen to them, as last year showed us.
