BREAKING: Yankees "Anticipating" a MiLB Deal w/ Nick Swisher

According to Meredith Marakovits during the Yankees broadcast on YES Network today free agent outfielder and first baseman Nick Swisher is reportedly down at the Yankees minor league complex in Tampa working out with the team. Marakovits goes on to say that the Yankees are "anticipating" a minor league deal between Swisher and the club to come in the coming days.

If you watched at all during the 2009 season this has to bring you back a little and it has to excite you just a little. Come on, it's a minor league deal and it's insurance and depth in case Mark Teixeira gets injured.

I love it.

    1. Never know. May come up as an outfield reserve. Can come up as a first baseman reserve. If he could hit again it would be nice to have another switch hitter in the lineup.

  2. Again a dumpster dive move. Why do we need that clown back? Clogging up a potential spot for a young player down own the farm. The elf just doesn't get it

    1. I usually don't agree with you Hans and this time I'm on the fence. I like the idea of having him back because I'm a fan but my main concern is who would he block? New York has proven they aren't giving Tyler Austin a shot at the first base job and there is basically no one else that stands out at this point.

      Who is he blocking?

    2. With current roster, I don't see him blocking anyone, with meaningful at bats, shall I say. He can play outfield 1st or pitch, and give him a few Pinch hit opportunities.

If there's an outfield injury, the youth comes in.

    3. Of course you don't agree Reed. Why is this guy needed? He could fill in a little at 1st base is that it? The guy is a scrub that's a career 160 playoff hitter. What does he do for this team? I'm voting for Cruz now so please change to Trump or Bernie since I now support your candidate. Lol Burch please continue to disagree with me as well it just reinforces my belief that I'm right more often then not.

    4. It is nice to see you admit to changing your mind. I understand why you did it...Cruz is the better man with a sound conservative background that is HIM not a guy that will go along with the bloviating "RINOs" that dominate the congress now.
No, I didn't think so! LOL
Have a good one Ken...have fun!

    5. I know, immigration and foodstamps welfare and Obama phones is enough to drive any American that makes any effort in life completely nuts.

However, the only thing I hear from trump is "I'm not a politician, I make my own money, they can't buy me" with that protruding lower lip he makes.

Im all for bringing jobs back, and taxing companies that have overseas factories, but does that mean a 20,000 dollar ford (which is partially made in Mexico...) go up to 30k?are Americans going to accept that?

We already know the iPhone is made in a factory where the Chinese are locked in a room for 18 hour days. American factories couldn't do anywhere near that. Which isn't a bad thing, but I think consumers will pay the price.

Not that I'm starting another fight, but this is kind of a serious question because I'm not following trump or the Republican candidates that much. Has this been elaborated on?

And back to baseball, I don't see a spot to appropriately give at bats to youth, so why not waste the spot on swisher (or anyone else we aren't invested in, for that matter)

And I think Adam Warren made debut yesterday. Not sure final line, but when I checked, was at 1 1/3 inning with zeros

    6. Swisher will likely play first base for the RailRiders. The only person he's possibly blocking is Tyler Austin and the Yankees have proven time after time they are about as confident in him as they are Robert Refsnyder.

And my desire for Trump is change. Radical change. I don't believe he will get half as much done as he thinks or is promising that he will, that's any president, but I believe we need something different. We don't need another politician that is only going to line the pockets of the rich and eff the poor and working class.

Nothing is going to change until we make it change. A radical candidate like Ben Carson, Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders accomplishes that in the short term and in the long term in my opinion.

  3. IT'S SWISH-ALICIOUS TIME AGAIN !!
Great move, had his best days with the Yanks. Four straight playoffs,
    and one championship.
As Brian says...." Stay thirsty, my friend."

  4. I don't get it, why is it a bad move? He is not taking anyones job! I think I have heard by some few commenters; "There is no bad minor league signing!".
IF (as Daniel said) he can get his bat working he could be a good back-up, if not, cut him.

    1. Exactly. He has a June opt-out date anyway so if he sucks, let him walk. If he doesn't use him. If you can't use him, trade him.

Getting an A-Ball pitcher for someone we paid $200K-ish to is worth it every time.

    2. If the clown makes the team we pay him vets min which is $500K plus not $200K and remember we are short money with this owner so every lit bit we save helps.

      Delete
  5. Yes that's the min but since he has a June opt out clause if you prorate that 500k (it's 525k but who is counting) it's roughly.... 200k

  6. The guy couldn't make it with the Indians or the Braves and all of a sudden he is going to push a magic button and make himself useful. Look at his slash lines for the last few years. This is a move predicated on what you did for me in the past. If the Braves didn't keep him what does that say? Yes its a minor league deal, sometimes you need to think of the thought process and thats what bothers me. The elf will block his youngsters at any position to make a move like this. Yes I understand he isn't blocking a first baseman down in the minors, however he is going to take a spot and that is what is alarming. He's done. I do recall a few of you saying that CC is done and get rid of him. This guy is done and he hasn't even got here.

  7. Swisher certainly has regressed since leaving the Yankees, so I see your point Hans. But he did hit .219 the season before he got to the Yankees. Some people just play better in NY. I don't really have an explanation why. As long as he isn't given as much rope as Stephen Drew and Brian Roberts were given, I don't have a problem with Swisher. I think he was good for the clubhouse. Almost like a team mascot or something like that.

    1. Swisher was asked to be "the man" in Chicago, Atlanta (remember Freeman was hurt and so was basically everyone else) and Cleveland. He'll hit behind Didi Gregorius and Starlin Castro in this lineup. He's going to play a position the Yankees don't have any depth at. I don't see a problem here, especially on a minor league deal.

Not even guaranteed a 40 man roster spot.

    2. Sorry Burch the Braves are 0-6 and this clown couldn't make that roster. You're looking for every excuse in the book to defend a career 160 PO hitter and not much better regular season hitter. I have a good friend of mine who is a scout for the St Louis Cards and he says he is done like yesterdays news. No legs, can't drive a ball and you want him to be an OF backup as well??? No I would rather have Ackley who can play more spots then Swisher and is younger.

  8. I'm not defending the hitter, I'm defending the deal. There is absolutely no risk involved with a minor league deal and it's worth pennies in the grand scheme of things.

And in my newest post in Swisher I even pointed out that I was reserving judgement on him making the team, if and when it happens.

He may be done. I don't know. He is on a minor league deal though and I don't have a problem with a minor league deal.

    1. That deal will be a major league deal as you point out when he comes on board

    2. And what are the Yankees out? They can transfer one of many people on the 40 man roster to the 60 day DL including Greg Bird and Nick Rumbelow. The only way he will come up is if Teixeira is hurt so we'll replace nothing, and yes Chris Parmelee is nothing and Tyler Austin is getting the Robert Refsnyder treatment, with barely something defensively.

Nostalgia aside I don't WANT Swisher on the team. I don't believe he will be much and I don't believe he has much left in the tank. This just isn't a move I'm getting up in arms about. When a guy like Refsnyder is blocked I get up in arms. When Chris Parmelee gets blocked I shrug my shoulders and move on.

    3. Burch your other post states this...Swisher has a June opt-out date written into his minor league deal so he can leave on his own sometime in June anyway, I can’t see the Yankees letting a veteran like Swisher walk away for nothing, not without giving him a shot on a trial basis similar to the one they gave Refsnyder before the All-Star break in 2015, with or without an injury.

Then you state in your above post...The only way he will come up is if Teixeira is hurt so we'll replace nothing,

So which is it Burch? That's always one of my beefs with you, both sides of the fence. You can't have it that way. I'm beating a dead horse here. He brings nothing and I mean nothing to this team. If Tex gets hurt the elf needs to make a trade for a replacement. The full-time first baseman can't be Ackley or Swisher. I keep using the term clown because to me that is what he is. Listen to his interviews and watch him, he's a clown

    4. So I can't change my mind, got it. I put myself out there six or seven times a day with these blog posts, I can take it. I didn't know I had to be perfect in doing so but hey, whatever. Playing both sides. Got it.

      Delete
    5. Hey when I apparently mess up you let me know, so ya if you're going to dish it you have to be able to take it. I made valid points on Swisher and as you stated you don't agree with me which is more then fine, however if you play both sides of the fence I will let you know because as the blog master you are held at a higher standard. I respect you putting all these articles out.

    6. I've never shied away from taking it nor have I shied away from admitting when I was wrong. It's all good, I like the differing opinions. I do. I love to debate at heart but by the time I type out the post and schedule it, blah blah, I don't have time for it like I used to.

And thank you for keeping me on my toes and for the respect.

  9. Does anyone here believe Castro will NOT grow out of 2nd base? I think he will unless, he gets his weight under control now. He has grown much bigger over the last few years and looks as though he was moved because of lower range at SS which could come to pass at 2nd also.
    What do you guys think?
