This Day in New York Yankees History 5/20: Babe Ruth Jersey and One Armed Outfielders

On this day in 2012 Babe Ruth's 1920 jersey sells at auction for $4,415,658. This was the largest amount ever paid for a piece of sports memorabilia according to auctionreport.com. The woolen uniform was worn by Ruth during his first season as a Yankee after being traded to New York by the Red Sox.

Also on this day in 1976 the Yankees and the Red Sox are in one of the ugliest brawls in the history of the rivalry when Carlton Fisk stabs Lou Piniella with the ball when Sweet Lou tried to score. Bill Lee suffered a separated shoulder in the fight with Graig Nettles and caused him to miss most of the season.

Also on this day in 1959 the Yankees enter last place in the American League for the first time since 19 years when they lost to the Detroit Tigers 13-6.

Also on this day in 1948 Joe DiMaggio had four extra base hits for the fourth time in his career in Chicago in front of 5,001 fans. DiMaggio hit for the cycle for the second time in a 13-2 victory over the White Sox. The Yankees had 22 hits and DiMaggio had two home runs, a triple, a double, a single, and six RBI's.

Also on this day in 1945 Pete Gray led the St. Louis Browns to a doubleheader sweep of the New York Yankees after scoring the winning run in the second game. Gray collected three hits in the first game and the one-armed outfielder makes ten putouts in the field in the second game.

Also on this day in 1918 Tris Speaker was struck in the head with a pitch off of Red Sox submariner Carl Mays. Mays would also hit Ray Chapman two years later in the head with a pitch that would kill him as a member of the New York Yankees. Speaker thought that Mays hit him on purpose in the head but Mays always denied the allegations.

Finally a mere seven years later in 1925 Speaker scored from first base on a single scoring the winning run in a 10-9 walk off win over the Yankees. The Indians scored six times in the bottom of the ninth to cap off the comeback. Where was Mariano Rivera when you need him?

  1. 1959 the Yanks went on to end up in 3rd place that year...the only year in 7-8(?) years they didn't go to the WS...that is what I want for this team again. Just because it is a lot of playoff games to get to the WS means nothing. This is the Yankees, correction, it was the Yankees, the team huge stories, and stage shows were made about. Some of the greatest teams in the history were Yankee teams of 1927, 1961 and some say 1995 (or 1996 one of the two).
All they need to do is find a supper #1 pitcher to go with what we have. Find a big time outfielder that is a game changer and the same at 3rd base. Put Bird at 1st next year, Judge in right field and the new guy in left field if he can play left field well enough otherwise DH. Cut A-Rod and either Ells or Gardy along with Headley.
The team needs Hal to understand he can make all the money in the world but lose the Yankee mystic unless he spends money to make money.
Wherever one goes to a game there are Yankee fans maybe half the fans are Yankee fans in some places.

Only took me 25 min, this time.

  2. This is what I believe is and has been going on...IF, wrong so be it and let me be wrong...please!
I am getting tired of hearing crap about the team and the management of the team and organization itself. Without money any other GM would not make any more of the team than the one we have...he may not be the best GM in baseball but he does the best he can with what is allotted to him. Put the blame where it belongs the whole Steinbrenner family and Tampa Cabal. One should look at the list of family members on the Executives and Officers list...almost every one of the upper management above Cashman is family...except Levine (GM want-a-be) and Trost the mouthpiece of the family.
Every day we (you guys) spend money, one way or another to make money (at work) whereas the Stines seem to think the King made this Organization into their privet Piggy Bank to live off of forever. I sometimes wonder if they have ever heard the Old Saw; "Use it or lose it!"?
I was very encouraged this year as they started working on the Farm System, but when I saw all the red meat out there being picked up by everyone else but us I thought, "Oh Sh-t, here we go again!".
If they don't use the money to make the team into a contender every year they will end up with nothing but a "What was" and a pore "what is"=nothing.
