On this day in 1995 Mariano Rivera throws a five inning no hitter against the Rochester Red Wings of the International League. Mo finished his minor league career with a 27-18 record and a 2.35 ERA with seven complete games, this no hitter and another seven inning no hitter on his resume.
Also on this day in 1974 Derek Sanderson Jeter was born a mere 20 years before he became quite possibly the greatest Yankee of all-time and definitely the best Yankees player of my generation. Happy birthday Jetes!
Finally on this day in 1944 the great state of New York had a three team baseball game for charity. The Polo Grounds held roughly 50,000 fans that watched a six inning game between the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Giants. The way it worked was a team would play consecutive innings against the other two teams and then would sit out the third inning. The money went for war bonds and the final score was the Dodgers 5, the Yankees 1, and the Giants 0.

Not that I agree with the sentiment but if Babe Ruth wasn't a unanimous decision I can't see how Jeter could be. I get that Ruth may have rubbed people the wrong way with his beer drinking and such while Jeter was a squeaky clean guy but still.
DeleteMy all time favorite player of all time (on the field play only) was Ty Cobb. He played the game like a "Junkyard Dog" no quarter given to anyone at any time...he was the great intimadator...my kind of player!
DeleteMickey was my hero, I remember talking to him once and Casey walked up and said something like, "don't ask him how he plays the game so well, he doesn't know"! I never understood until I was older, he was one of the very few really Gifted Athletes (Bernie Williams, also) that happened to play baseball.
Didn't Ty Cobb go into the stands after a fan that he was calling a "retard?" I know you said on the field play only but still, he did that while he was on the field. No one is perfect, I get it, but that one is a bit overboard. Even for me.

DeleteHe was in the first group of players inducted into the HoF. The night before the other players were having a party in one of the rooms. Ty heard the party and went over to the room and asked what's up, he was told it was a privet party for another player...sorry about that!
