Are the Yankees Worth It? The Pitching

The New York Yankees had many believers this offseason despite adding a single major league free agent to the roster over the winter but the team has drastically underachieved and became sellers at the August 1st trade deadline. Was this because of the offense? We took a look at that earlier and determined that yeah, it might be, but what about the pitching? Has the pitching been worth their weight in Steinbrenner gold or did Brian Cashman screw up, hindsight being 20/20 and all, not adding to the rotation this winter? I’ll at least attempt to answer that question here for you today.

We didn’t need a graph or a chart or a visual aid to see that the Yankees pitching left a load of room for improvement in 2016. Masahiro Tanaka has seen better days, although he has been the model of consistency atop the rotation, but the Yankees biggest downfall may have been their reliance on Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova and CC Sabathia. The bullpen has been amazing and that group of guys won the team a lot of games that they probably had no business winning otherwise but the starters have been an Achilles heel all season long unfortunately. Hopefully the Yankees organization is watching and reading and know where to start either before the August 31st trading deadline or before Opening Day 2017 because this absolutely cannot happen again. Not if you want to win.

  1. This is why I believe in the conspiracy theory that sees them make a deal for Sale this off-season. Not to mention, the SP market this winter will be one of the worst classes for that position in a very long time.

    1. I can see the need for Sale but, I don't know if the Yankees (Hal) would pay the price. I believe in the Yankees hitting much more HRs than they have this year. We may have Bird @ 1st, Headley@3rd, Judge in RF, Sanchez, Romine and Didi will all hit double-digit Home Runs in 2017 maybe!
As I see it, we need very good bat/defense along with a very good arm.
      One of each!

    2. Cashman will dumpster dive for his pitching staff next year.

    3. Not that I'm trying to defend Cashman, but dumpster diving is about the only thing on the free agent market next year. I would actually like to see some of the pitchers in our system get a shot. Guys like Dietrich Enns, Chance Adams, and maybe even Jordan Montgomery.

    4. Ok with me, I would add Mitchell (as starter or swing man), Lindgran lhrp, and DeCarr rhsp and "Ace" Acevedo as a fall back option ( a damn good one) if he can get his command under control.

    5. Here's the deal I predict for Sale- Severino (will turn around and bite us), Mateo, Acevedo, Fowler, and Gamel. I will write a post about it soon.

    6. Just my opinion...
Mateo, Acevedo (for sure) and Severino are not to be traded unless it is for someone that is better than one of the best players out there. Like a position we could use him at; 2nd base Altuve, Machado 3rd/SS and maybe Trout at CF/LF. Trout is on the list because of his bat but, I would like to have one of the other two before him, we have more than enough OF help.

  2. Let's hope he doesn't trade any of these suspects away for a pitcher. I want to see Frazier up here in the next two weeks. If we are going young lets get it going now full bore. By the way your boy Gardner will be packaged for a pitcher in the winter so get your good-byes in now

    1. Don't think Frazier will be called up this season, he just made it to AAA. He will be up early next season though if not on opening day roster.

    2. Chicago pitcher.....Chris Sale...

A BIG LOAD OF TALENT being sent to Chicago in that last post I just read. Scary. An Eovaldi type mishap next July would f---
everything up. Chicago would do it. Me ? I'll pass.

If he had a strong history of quality...OK
His resume is a bit short for me. Too short, for that talented haul.

Besides that, the cutting up of uniforms, is disturbing.
Very immature....nuts. Who does that ? No one !

    3. I'm kind of surprised Gardner is still a Yankee. I figured he would be moved last offseason. His second half collapse last year might have had something to do with that. But as weak as this free agent class is, I think you're right. Gardner is probably gone.

  3. Sale is a good pitcher with a lose screw, I think we have had a few pitchers such as he before. They bombed in NY!
We would have to give up everyone on our top 100 list, plus a few others for him...not worth it to me!
A list of people like these; Frazier, Severino, Adams, Mateo, G. Torres, Acevedo, Sheffield, W. Garcia or a few others on the best of the rest list...can't be given up until we see what we really have.
The pitchers we have on the Farm have not gotten a good look because we had guys like CC, Nova and Severino blocking any chance for them to really start more than one game.
As it is we are going to have Tank, Pineda, Green, Severino and ??? as our starters for now. This is a perfect time to drop one of the kids in there for Tank once in a while.
And yes, I think it would benefit the team to trade Brett and let Hicks go!

  4. We are going to have trade for SP and the only way to do that is from strength. Pitchers will be brought back in the McCann and Gardner trades that will happen in the off season. We shall see if the elf can maintain his streak of getting quality back. Maybe with luck he will trade Headley. We don't need both Headley or Castro so one has to go. Either one opens spot for Refsnyder to play second as Castro would shift to third if Headley is dealt

  5. I apologize for my lack of posting lately. Been sick as a dog and every time I took a step forward I would take two steps back. I did keep reading all the comments though and they inspired a few of my upcoming posts including one that will go live tomorrow afternoon.

I am not saying this is the best idea or an ideal option but I don't see the Yankees making a big move for a guy like Sale. I see them continuing to build from within and around Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda at the top of the rotation. Luis Severino will also get a chance you would think while CC Sabathia has one more season left on his contract.

Then you have Luis Cessa, Chad Green, Bryan Mitchell and eventually Chance Adams, James Kaprielian and one guy I wrote about specifically tomorrow.

    No spoilers :)
