Real good players come up at 19 to 21 years old at the latest. And I know we can all name a lot of them, no need to do so here. The point of being too young is tenuous at best, talent is talent and it never leaves one, until the players age and legs go south on them!Ken Reedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134936968221887101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2676591017018865408.post-71000255020927894492014-12-08T10:52:48.771-05:002014-12-08T10:52:48.771-05:00I'd say closer to 2017 but he is "old&quo...I'd say closer to 2017 but he is "old" for the GCL at 19 years old so anything is possible. His hitting will come around, remember he was injured part of the year but, still hit so,so!
I keep jumping back and forth between Mateo, Avelino and Wade!I don't know who of those three will make it and stick in the bigs! It well could be someone else altogether, we have about 8 more of those young guys.
The only one I have seen play is Avelino and he impressed me a lot...the pitchers will be happy to see any one of them playing behind them.Ken Reedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134936968221887101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2676591017018865408.post-30373025746728472382014-12-07T11:36:28.499-05:002014-12-07T11:36:28.499-05:00Mateo is no where near the big leagues, not becaus...Mateo is no where near the big leagues, not because of his age but because of his production. He didn't even hit .300 in the Gulf Coast League, what would he do in the majors? He won't surely get better that's for sure. He needs at least two seasons in the minors and that's if the Yankees are aggressive with him and let him finish both A Ball levels and end the season in AA in 2015.

He only played in 15 games in the GCL and is likely to head back there or to Pulaski in 2015 to start. He's nowhere close. Sure he had a second hip surgery but he has also had a full calendar year to let it heal, rehab, stay in shape etc. I think he will be fine health wise. Whether he lost some timing basically taking two years off is what worries me.

Then again every time he has missed a big chunk of time he comes back not skipping a beat so what do I know. So what, old players are a one way ticket to the losing out-house! Damn, no one reads baseball history anymore! I like seeing the Yankees getting younger. It may mean next year's team isn't as good as it could be with someone like Headley, but it also means not having to worry about the downside of a free agent's career. Not to mention a free agent that has a long history of injuries.

I believe the name of the game for 2015 is run prevention. Let Headley go.
