Greedy Pinstripes Weekend Finale Open Thread

The weekend just flies by, doesn't it? Between the yard work, helping the kids with school work, being a dad, being a husband and being a blogger there just isn't enough time in the day. The weekends used to be for rest but now they are simply for catching up or go, go, going. Oh well I'm not complaining and I wouldn't have it any other way but by around this time Sunday evening I'm usually pretty done both physically and mentally. So for that reason I leave you with an open thread for the evening to discuss whatever you'd like.

Enjoy it and enjoy the rest of your evening and weekend. Have a good one and never forget!

Weekly Prospects Check In: Tyler Webb

Keeping with the Yankees minor league affiliates that are in the postseason and fighting for a respective championship, like the Triple-A Governors Cup, we check in with a prospect who has to be protected from the Rule 5 Draft this winter or could be lost to any of the other 29 MLB teams in the league. His name is Tyler Webb and he is a left-handed relief pitcher for the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders.

As the RailRiders look to win it all it will come off the backs of a nice offense, some gritty defense, good starting pitching and some elite relief work. Relief work that includes Mr. Webb and this stat line here for you all to see this evening:

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays 9/11

Here we go ladies and gentleman one last time as the New York Yankees remain home in the Bronx to play host to their division rival Tampa Bay Rays. The finale of the four-game set will take place this afternoon inside Yankee Stadium with Luis Cessa taking the mound for New York and Matt Andriese taking the mound for Tampa Bay. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

Not to look ahead too much, because I know the Yankees aren't, but tomorrow night New York welcomes the Los Angeles Dodgers to town for a historic three-game set. How often do we see the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees face off head-to-head let alone in the Bronx? Not often at all so if you want to see these games live click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog and secure your seats now. If you can't make it live then you can at least root for the home team from afar and follow along with us by either liking our page on Facebook or by giving our Twitter handle @GreedyStripes a follow.

Need a win. Get a win. And never forget. Go Yankees!

September 11th - Never Forget

Good morning Yankees family and a very somber September 11th to you all. This day will always, at least as long as I am alive, be a horrible day ingrained into my memory. Where were you when the world stopped turning on the morning of September 11th? I was in my 10th grade math class room with a teacher whose name I'll never remember with 29-30 other classmates I'll probably never speak to again. I will ALWAYS remember the 2,996 people killed in the World Trade Center, Pentagon and those on United Flight 9 along with the over 6,000 injured.

The loss of life was unprecedented. The loss of life in law enforcement and for fire fighters may never be matched again. We may never see anything like this in the history of our great country again and you know what, that's A-okay with me. Never forget ladies and gentleman. Never forget.

Silence (over Manhattan)
by Paula Bardell

A black September shadow cloaks the dawn,
The City’s once white teeth now rotting stumps,
Midst choking dusty embers ether-borne,
Its shrunken soundless heart now barely pumps.
Infernos upon retribution rise,
Fanaticism maddening the flames,
Its once imposing deities abscise,
As the faceless antagonist proclaims:
A consummation sweet but unfulfilled,
A penetrative burst without regret,
A zealous passion never to be stilled,
An earthly instinct powerful, and yet –
This bitter loathing blowing from the East,
Curtailed but could not kill the feisty beast.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays 9/11

The finale of this big four-game set goes down today between the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays in the Bronx. The Yankees have been a forced to be reckoned with lately and especially in this series as the Rays and even Mother Nature tried and failed to stop New York more times than not this series. New York is on a roll and they look for complete domination this afternoon in the finale of the series. In the finale the Yankees will send Luis Cessa to the mound to square off against Matt Andriese for the Rays. Should be another good one in the Bronx.

Cessa will be making the fifth start of his MLB career this afternoon in the Bronx and he is looking to keep his unbeaten record clean in the start. As a starter Cessa is 2-0 this season with a 3.09 ERA in four starts despite giving up far too many home runs.

Andriese has lasted just nine innings in his last two starts while allowing 14 runs in that same time period, yes please. Andriese has allowed 10 home runs in his last seven starts which is not a great sign as he enters a home run friendly ballpark in the Bronx. Well it's not a good sign for Tampa Bay anyway.

The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. On days like today, even in the midst of a pennant race, the games become less important and the meaning of the actual day takes center stage. Well it should anyway. Need a win. Get a win. More importantly though, never forget. Go Yankees!

Weekly Prospects Check In: Dietrich Enns

Dietrich Enns is one of the many Yankees prospects that will have to be protected or left out for the taking before this winter's Rule 5 Draft. Earlier when I wrote about the potential Rule 5 Draft picks this winter I basically dismissed a couple arms as having little-to-no chance of being selected this winter and Mr. Enns was one of them. Upon further review, and with a little help from a friend in the comments section, I delved deeper and realized just how wrong I was. Insert foot in mouth. I won't make that mistake again and if opposing teams down in Triple-A make that same mistake it may be game over in the Governors Cup Final.

Can Enns and the RailRiders take home the Triple-A Championship? Stay tuned:

This Day In New York Yankees History: September 11th

On this day in 2009 Derek Jeter became the Yankees all-time hits king passing Lou Gehrig with an opposite field single in the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles. Derek would pass the former Yankee captain and Iron Horse with his 2,722 hit of his Yankees career after Gehrig held the franchise record for more than 70 years.

Also on this day in 2001 as we all know and will forever remember terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York, Pentagon in Washington D.C., and got overtaken above Pennsylvania resulting in a plane crash. Major League Baseball cancelled all games on this day for security reasons and to allow everyone to reflect, mourn, and catch up with what was going on around the country.

Today we once again honor those who have fallen, those who protect us and pray for our country. Never forget.

Yanks Celebrate LLWS Champs With Win Over Tampa, 5-1

Today, the Yankees honored the Little League World Series Championship team from New York in a special pregame ceremony before taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. Each member of the team trotted out to their respective positions, standing alongside the Yankee starters as the national anthem was being played and a video montage of their championship run scrolled across the Jumbotron in centerfield. After the anthem, the champs ran off the field and into the dugout where the rest of the Yankees were waiting for them with high-fives and congratulations, capping off an afternoon that they most definitely will never forget.

This is what makes baseball so great; a chance to see starry-eyed youngsters being celebrated for their baseball accomplishments by the diamond heroes they so long to emulate. Like Brad Pitt said as Billy Beane in the movie Moneyball, "How can you not be romantic about baseball."

The Pinstripers used that little league inspiration this afternoon as they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in game three of the four game set. Masahiro Tanaka was absolutely brilliant in his outing, improving to 13-4 with his dominant performance today. Getting the ball and a loss for Tampa Bay was there ace Chris Archer, falling to 8-18 in another outing for the righty that started off really well but failed to get the job done in the end.

Both Archer and Tanaka cruised through the first five frames, with Tanaka out-dueling the AL strikeout leader by striking out nine as compared to Archer's five.

Chris Archer was the first to blink in this pitchers duel this afternoon, as the Yankees were finally able to put some runs on the board against the tough righty. Brett Gardner started off the inning with a line drive single to center and scored when the next batter Jacoby Ellsbury launched a two-run homerun into the seats in right field, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead. The very next batter Gary Sanchez followed suit by blasting a deep homerun to centerfield to widen the gap to three.

Tanaka didn't end up giving up his first run until the top of the eighth where Bobby Wilson smacked a  one-out solo shot to left that inched the Rays closer at 3-1. Tanaka followed the longball with an unintentional drilling of Logan Forsythe. The HBP prompted manager Joe Girardi to pull his ace in favor of right-hander Adam Warren. Tanaka's performance today was one of the best in his major league career, tossing 7.1 innings of one run ball, allowing just five hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts. Warren escaped the inning with no further damage as he got Evan Longoria to ground into an inning ending double-play.

The Yankees went on to add two more important runs in the bottom of the eighth as they close the door on any ideas of a Tampa come back. Brett Gardner again started off the frame with a line drive single to left, advancing to third on a ground rule double by Jacoby Ellsbury. In a play that I have never seen happen, the next batter Gary Sanchez was supposed to be intentionally walked but took the first pitch he saw that bled back over the plate and blasted it to centerfield for a very long sacrifice fly that scored Gardner and made it a 4-1 score. Didi Gregorius followed up with a sacrifice fly of his own, a high fly ball to centerfield that scored Ellsbury from third to extend their lead to four.

The insurance runs were especially important because Delin Betances was unavailable for this afternoon's game. A combination of Richard Bleier and Tyler Clippard went on to retire the Rays, sealing the series victory and pulling the Yankees to within a half game of the second Wild Card spot and 3.5 games of first place in the AL East.

The Bombers look to make it back to back series sweeps tomorrow in game four, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM/EST.

Yankees, RiverDogs Agree to Extend Relationship Through 2020

Yankees, RiverDogs Agree to Extend
Relationship Through 2020
Player Development Contract Extended for Additional Four Years

CHARLESTON, SC – In their 12 seasons as a Yankees affiliate, the Charleston RiverDogs have sent 52 players from The Joe to “The Show” with Yankees stars including the likes of Phil Hughes, David Robertson and Dellin Betances along with rising stars Greg Bird, Gary Sanchez, Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge all once having called Charleston home.

Off the field, the RiverDogs’ have enjoyed some of their most successful seasons eclipsing attendance records almost annually with the Yankees affiliation. In a continuation of the relationship, the RiverDogs and the Yankees have announced an extension of their partnership for four years, through the 2020 season.

“We’re thrilled to continue our relationship with the Yankees, the most successful and recognizable organization in professional sports,” said Marv Goldklang, principal owner of the RiverDogs. “This has been a mutually beneficial partnership since the outset, providing a first- class facility and playing surface to help the Yankees develop premium on-field talent while we entertain fans with our award-winning off-field experience.”

“We are excited to renew with the Charleston RiverDogs,” said Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman. “The franchise is a jewel of MiLB under Marv’s leadership and that of President and General Manger Dave Echols, and we couldn’t be happier to partner for another four years.”

With the crop of Yankees talent flowing through Charleston during the past 12 years, it is notable that 18 players on the Yankees’ current Major League roster appeared in a RiverDogs uniform. Off the field, the RiverDogs have broken their attendance record four times in the past 12 seasons, including a record setting 293,161 fans who passed through the turnstiles in 2016.
