Game 74 Lineup: Rays vs. Yankees

Here we are! Game 3 of the 4 game set and we have CC on the mound, coming off a GREAT start last time in Anaheim. Here is your starting lineup!

Brett Gardner CF
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Robinson Cano 2B
Travis Hafner DH
Lyle Overbay 1B
Zoilo Almonte RF
Jayson Nix SS
David Adams 3B
Chris Stewart C

LHP CC Sabathia

Some Notes:

-- Derek Jeter is at the stadium for the weekend and he took BP with the team.

-- In case you're wondering, John Sterling's HR call for Zolio Almonte is "Curses, Zoiled Again!"

  1. Damn!! Crushing Grand Slam by Myers. Gardner juuuust missed making an incredible catch. Does anyone know where to find a stat for what a pitcher allows after an intentional walk? It seems that everytime CC intentionally walks someone he gives up huge hits afterwards.

  3. Smart move by Girardi using Wells to pinch hit for Stewart. McGee threw all Fastballs....11 Straight FBs, all between 95-97 MPH so he used Wells who is a dead-red FB hitter. Wells has been brutal since April (9 for his last 89!) because scouting reports got around that he was jumping FBs and could be gotten out with breaking stuff out of the zone as he swings at everything.

Clutch Walks by the 2 rookies....Zoilo and Adams. In fact they both Walked twice today. The lack of Walks has been a huge problem for the Yankee offense this year. Yanks used to grind out ABs and make pitchers work, but adding vets like Ichiro and Wells who refuse to take Walks and losing patient hitters like Youk and Tex have given their lineup a different feel. Perhaps the 2 rookies can start to bring the patience virtue back to NY. Zoilo had always been a free-swinger but he's improved his discipline immensely this yr in AAA and looks poised, confident and patient at the plate to me.

  4. Indeed. CC is still a horse but hasn't been as effective this year. His arm strength is much better now but his command is still spotty. By the way, 4 Walks from Cano is a great sign. The other hitters will have to drive in more runs but Cano HAS to accept his Walks or he will not get good pitches to hit.

  5. Dumb managing by Maddon there. Adams/Wells would have had no chance against a righty. Great win regardless!

  6. fishjam, the good sign is neither Zoilo or David look out of place, there will be some growing pains as with any young major league player. Almonte came up at the right time for the Yanks, he is a shot in the arm. Yanks need to continue playing well at home.

  7. Cano must have been reading this blog! Today he did the right thing, he can become the back bone of this team, he already is the bast player. Just get on base Cano, let others do their job!
I think this could be a very telling game for Cano, someone (Long or his Dad) must have knocked some sense into him...I like it!
