Bob Nightengale, of USA Today, passed along some very interesting news earlier.
It turns out that the Dodgers will not be in on Robinson Cano this offseason, when he's set to become a free agent.
Everybody thought Los Angeles would be all over Cano, as they not only have a hole to fill at second base, but they've spent a ton of money and seemingly have more to go around. Not only did they take on the contracts of Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez, Carl Crawford, and Josh Beckett, but they also spent a lot on Zack Greinke ($147 million), Yasiel Puig ($42 million), Hyun-Jin Ryu ($36 million), and Brandon League ($22.5 million). Not to mention the $6 million they took on when they dealt for Ricky Nolasco, as well as the contract extension they gave to Andre Ethier last spring ($85 million).
The reason the Dodgers won't be in on Cano is due to the fact that they don't want to give out any large contracts beyond a player's age 36 season. Seeing as how Robbie will be 31, and will likely get a contract at or above seven years, he doesn't fit LA's philosophy.
To be honest, I'll believe it when I see it. The Dodgers have a lot of money to spend, have a big hole at 2nd, and Cano is the biggest free agent available this offseason. He's not the type of player you put a limit on.
