TRENTON, NJ – The Thunder used an RBI single by Saxon Butler in his first Thunder home game, to jump ahead of Akron once-and-for-all in Trenton’s 5-4 win over the Akron Aeros Friday night.
Trenton scored three runs on three walks, a hit and a double-steal of second and home to take a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1stinning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Reegie Corona singled home a pair of runners and advanced Carmen Angelini from first to third. Then during the ensuing at-bat, Corona took off for second and when Akron’s catcher threw down towards second base, Angelini broke for the plate and scored.
By the bottom of the 5th inning, Akron had chipped away at the three-run lead to draw even with the Thunder 4-4. With two outs and the bases empty, the Thunder mounted a rally with Reegie Cornoa shooting a double up the third base line. The next batter was Butler- playing in his second Thunder game, and first at ARM & HAMMER Park- and he delivered with the game-deciding hit.
Shane Greene allowed four runs (two earned) over 5.1 innings, before deferring to a bullpen effort that silenced Akron over the final 3.2 innings. Greene moves to 6-3 on the season, while David Herndon tossed a scoreless 8th and 9th innings for his first save with the Thunder.
