While Don Larsen's 1956 season was not one for the record books, although he did set a career best in wins with 11 and had a 3.26 ERA, his Game 5 start in the 1956 World Series was. On 10/8/56 against the Dodgers at Yankee Stadium the Indiana native became the first and only pitcher to ever throw a no hitter in the World Series.
34 days until Yankees Opening Day
DON LARSON.....my grade school teacher, Peter Steinmaker, wheeled in a black & white
ReplyDeletetelevision, around three PM on Oct. 8 '56. Since World Series game back then started at 1 PM,
most of us that remained in that classroom, had no idea what he was doing. But, I stayed.
I saw the strikeout, the Yogi hug....and the moment. To me then...good stuff, Yankees won. Nothing more.
!959, Don Larson, and my fathers favorite Yankee...Hank Bauer ( a World War Two ..Marine )...get
traded to Kansas City. For a guy named Roger Maris.
Well that's awesome. I wasn't born for 29 more years ;)
DeleteI too, saw the game on a B&W tv. I watched the whole game and had to escort one of the kids out of the room because he started talking about a no-hitter! As I remember it, wasn't it a perfect game? Not a no hitter?
ReplyDeleteBefore and after that game, Don was never a good pitcher, he was a starter but that's the best that can be said for him.
But for one day, one game, one time in the history of Baseball...he did something that had never been done nor has since!
Yes I believe it was a perfect game, my mistake.
DeleteRocket...Funny how life weaves it's fabric. Stay strong.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I hate the word IF.
DeleteThe Dodgers thought they had their best chance against the Yankees IF they could get Don pitching one of the games. Well he did do that, and some...the best plans fall apart at the first shot!
