Ivan Nova gave up 7 earned runs in 3.2 innings and Vidal Nuno relieved him with a terrible performance of his own (3.1 innings, 7 earned runs) today as the Yankees had their two-game win streak snapped by the Orioles, 14-5. From start to finish this afternoon, Nova really was struggling, giving up three runs in a single frame twice, which makes me wonder: is he even worth keeping anymore? Seriously, does he ever pitch well nowadays?
Anyway, the Yankees offense had a game of firsts this afternoon, as Carlos Beltran had his first RBI extra-base hit as a Bomber and Alfonso Soriano and Kelly Johnson each hit their first home runs of the season. Besides them, Yangervis Solarte, of course, drove in another run on a double, while Brett Gardner got a man home from third with a groundball in the fourth.
A few other Pinstripes who also played pretty well here were Jacoby Ellsbury, who went 3-for-4 to stretch his hitting streak to 5, and Dellin Betances, who struck out 3 in 1.2 innings of relief. Nothing too impressive, as the game was well over when he came in, but still, definitely not a bad sign.
