This Day in New York Yankees History 3/21: Robin Roberts #36
On this day in 1962 in a ceremony prior to a spring training game the Phillies honored the newest Yankee, and former Philadelphia player, Robin Roberts by retiring his number 36 uniform number. Roberts wore the number for 14 seasons while with the Phillies and started the game against his former team giving up four runs in three innings. Roberts, the future Hall of Fame right hander would get the win in a 13-10 Yankees victory.
Robin was the one guy back in the day, that the batters dug in against. This hurt his numbers really big time. He had pinpoint control and very seldom pitched tight inside and the batters knew it. Those that did get hit were fooled on the pitch and dove out over the plate and got hit by the pitch. I have seen him pitch many times and have seen the greatness in his arm and head the only thing that was missing...his killer instinct. This is one player that got into the HoF because of his Talents and playing for a second tier team and still winning. Most of the time his catchers had a day off...all they had to do was put the glove out there and the ball would find it.
