Jackie Robinson Day is fast approaching Major League
Baseball and in just a couple of days everyone will wear the #42 one more time.
One last time, well until next year, and right about now is when all the Jackie
Robinson related news and stories come out including the press release stating
that Major League Baseball would fund 30 Jackie Robinson scholarships this year
in honor of Mr. Robinson, the man who broke the color barrier in the sport we
all love.
Major League Baseball announced the funding of 30 different
four-year scholarships, one for each MLB team, as well as a $1 million donation
to the project to build a Robinson museum in New York City. MLB has previously
given over $15 million to the scholarship program and museum fund that assists
225 students annually. The foundation reports that $21 million has been raised
towards the museum’s goal of $24 million for construction.
MLB is making money hand over foot these days but they
aren’t scared to give it back and that makes me proud to be a fan of the
league. Good job Commissioner Manfred.
