Major League Baseball could be returning to the Olympics and
it could be returning to the Olympics as soon as the 2020 games in Tokyo. In
years past college players have represented the United States in the games but
Commissioner Rob Manfred is at least leaving the door open for Major League
players representing the country if and when the games return to the biggest
stage in the world.
Commissioner Manfred obviously couldn’t give a definitive
“yes” or “no” answer to the question but he did give us at least his thoughts
on the possibility. Baseball has not yet been reinstated into the games so
committing players into that now would be a bit premature, especially when we
don’t know when the tournament will start or how long the tournament will go on
for, etc., but the fact that it has been discussed and may already be in the works
in encouraging.
