New York Yankees Off Day Open Thread

The New York Yankees are off tonight after playing 40 games in 41 days and the rest tonight is much deserved and definitely much needed. It's too bad that the team is likely spending the off day traveling out west to Colorado to take on the Colorado Rockies inside Coors Field. So while the Yankees either travel or get settled into their hotel rooms to have nightmares of facing Nolan Arenado for three games I leave you with this open thread for the night.

Talk about whatever you like, just keep it respectful please. Thank you and have a great night.

  1. George Steinbrenner became owner of the Yankees in 1973 and won two WS in those first 22 years...that is one hell of a long time!
After that they won 5 WS in the next 20 years...why?

George lost control of the Yankees and Watson/"Stick"/ Cashman/ Showalter took over the team. They used the farm system as it was meant to be used. They brought up some of the best they had and let them compete for a job...brought in a player or so to help what they had already and pluged them in. Guess what fans, it worked didn't it.

Anyone get the idea yet? Maybe history will repeat itself again.

Yes, Hal is a cheep owner, but he will have to come up with the money we will need once he gets under the Cap. We are not that far away from having a contender right now. I know the suck, just remember we have players that are only here because of the money owed them...so they are in the line-up, and bringing the team down.
Let's face it, who would you like to have play 3rd base for the Yankees in 2018, Headley or Manny Machado? That can happen, as can a few other players fill in holes in our team after we get under the CAP.

Trading away talent for older talent is fine if the older guy gets a resonable contract but, the way it is today is pay them for the last 3 years for doing nothing but blocking a better player from the team.

Seven WS rings in 45 years is a disgrace, even in the way the game is set up for the play-offs etc

    1. yea i read this. yep- fake winning streaks will be the most dangerous thing that can happen to this team.

    2. I refuse to read Joel Sherman. Him and I don't get along because every once in a while I break news before him and it hurts his feelings and his ego. Well it doesn't until I nicely ask him about it.

      Thanks for sharing though :)

  3. My Daliy Comment. Hal abs the elf suck as does the scouting and player personal department put together by Elf not Trost not LEVINE. All personal in the baseball operations are under the arm of the elf

    2. They are now, yes! This wasn't always the case, there were a few people Cash wanted to hire for player development that were asking good money and they were not hired...why I don't know.
In 2010 Cashman got the go ahead to revamping the whole farm system, top to bottom. You and others may not like the people he chose, but we don't know how good they will be as one or two are new in the last year or so.
One can't rebuild an organization in one year or even 10, it takes time and mistakes along the way...thus the new people.
Other teams (the best ones) have not had to deal with ownership that traded away farm hands instead of grooming them for the teams future.
As far as jumping on a bandwagon when the team wins a few in a row, let us not confuse happiness for a win, with expecting wins!

    3. Reed, you better just pray to whatever power you believe in that this kid rutherford signs!

      Delete
    4. if rutherford signs, and if Chapman is able to (which should be easy) bring us a great prospect(s) back in a trade, cash will be considered a genius (which you and I know HE thinks he is).

I have my doubts on both. Ken, if he fails at both, I will spend entirely too much time and energy promoting #cashmanisthedevil or something. probably put it on one of daniel's tshirts!

    5. Everyone on this board knows I can't stand the elf. I unlike Reed and Burch see the elf for what he is which is an inept GM that at one time had an open checkbook and didn't win enough WS with the ability to buy anyone when George was alive and kicking.

I also know that the elf is in control of all baseball operations no matter what his title says. He is a notorious dumpster diver that has had success with some and not with others. He constantly trades with the same partners like the Tigers and D backs and Mariners. Two of his trading partners are gone, one being fired the other to the Roid Sux so to expect this clown to make a serious move is slim to none.

The Yanks have now lost two games to the Rockies, how pathetic is that? Cut bait now and trade these guys now. Champman, Gardner,McCann, Beltran when healthy and bring back arms and prospects. Reed and Burch stop being delusional about this team. I told you they're a tease. Win 7 in a town and lose 7 in a row. The worst thing that can happen to this franchise is to win 10 in a row and have a false sense of a playoff run and keep this roster intact.

I said it before the season started and I'll say it again this roster is flawed and the elf has his handprints all over it with the moves he made. If the Rockies can eat $35 million or so on Reyes then what the hell are we doing? Hal sell the team or spend money or pay me off to shut the hell up.

    6. Not that this means much in the grand scheme of things but the Yankees have cleared almost $800K in slot money for Rutherford already and we're barely a week into this thing.

      Delete
    7. Winner will be UCLA just like with Cole and picking the kid second just so we didn't have to pay him much is bullshit. You're supposed to pick the top talent not take a kid because he will come cheap and that's why our farm system is mediocre at best. Yes Reed mediocre

    8. Two things Hans, our real farm system just got stated in 2010 and it is already good...not great! It takes a lot of time and hard work to get it off the ground and set on the right road.
From 1974 until 2008 the yankees spent $0000000000s' of $$$$ and only won 5 WS's in 40+ years.
What makes you think spending one hell of a lot of money for players is the answer? If one picks out where we need help and have someone 22 years old in AAA that can do the job...why go out and sign a FA to a 10 year contract? Instead, bring the kid up and look elsewhere for a place we DO NEED the help. Two or three players can change the whole team from an also ran to East Champs + !

    9. So Reed where are all these stud players on the farm? I don't see any

      Delete
    10. Hans, look around, there are not any teams that have studs at every position. One only needs the best talent from the Farm, and those we don't have (like 3rd base) we find a vet to fill the hole with. Which means we could get along with maybe two or three game changers as position players.

      Delete
    11. That's correct Reed, you fail to realize we have no studs at any position in the INF or OF so whats your point?

      Delete
    12. Did you miss this part? "we find a vet to fill the hole with. Which means we could get along with maybe two or three game changers as position players".
We don't need a team of studs we just need two or three game changers (studs).
What you misunderstand is that we have had many of the teams in the 60s and 80s that had 4 or so stars/studs...they won NOTHING. the years we won back in the 40/50 were made up of about 3 studs and the rest just good players, they won a few games didn't they?

      Delete
    13. We don't have three studs in the entire farm system. Everyone is a suspect not a prospect. I just don't understand why you can't see the other side of the fence that I'm standing behind? This organization has become second rate since boy Hal took over. Ya big deal we can beat the twinkies!

      Delete
    14. I give up trying to explain anything to you, everyone is a stud or a dud with you. We have about five guys that could be studs, but because they aren't with the team you don't count them. That is ok Hans they can't be counted as studs because nobody is a stud until they prove it in the show.

      Delete
    15. Exactly Reed, practice what you preach which is your last line, that nobody is a stud until they prove it in the show which is why Reed I call them suspects. You have a tendency to talk out of both sides of your mouth.

      Delete
    16. You don't have to have studs at every position. It didn't work in the 2000's with George spending billions and it doesn't have to be a thing in the minor leagues either. Sure it's nice, ideal and something I want but teams win games, not superstars. Even one team loses every single All-Star Game.

You bring up the best or the most useful and you fill in the gaps via free agency. Bernie wasn't an All-Star nor was he a blue chip prospect. Neither was Jorge, Mo or Andy. Andy was the best of the bunch but still he didn't come attached to the hype train that a Stephen Strasburg or a comparable player did.

Jeter was drafted 6th overall and still came with question marks and all the crap mentioned above. You do the best with what you have.

    17. You need pitching and right now CC is your best pitcher so what does that say? This team needed arms in off season and did shit to rectify this situation. Nova has proven he sucks and Eovaldi is on a few games off a few games so its safe to say his consistency is inconsistency. Tanaka has proven effective but he isn't really an ace. He's a 2 and Pineda sucks so we go out and trade for Castro when we had Refsnyder and gave up an arm that we are rumored to get back. Thats Classic

      Delete
    18. Daniel, I wonder if Hans will ever get it. I have tried to say the same thing in different ways and it isn't any good.
      I have written the same as you just did;
"You bring up the best or the most useful and you fill in the gaps via free agency."
Many times and ways, but to no avail.
I think he is stuck in the NOW instead of the future. If this is so, good for him. I like to think in the future because I can't see anything happening now to change anything unless they go for a clean house with all the older players. IF they do it right, it can have an affect on the future of the team in some small way.

      Delete
    19. Reed you can't get through to ne because you speak out of both sides of your mouth. It is you my friend who doesn't get it. You complained months ago how Hal wont spend any money and now you say he will. Don't make me go back to those posts and show you were you have said that NUMEROUS times. Your just like Obama with the flip[ flop

      Delete
    20. I said, "he won't spend any money", yes I did. But you take me out of context. I was saying, "He won't spend any money"...as of now. I have said many times, "he wants to get under the Cap 1st".
Sense 2003 to 2014 the yanks have paid $271,000,000 in Luxury Tax, that is 82% of all taxes up to 2014. Which is about $27,000,000+ a year...now do you get it. Yes, Hal is cheap, and won't spend money, but that will change once we get under the Cap. He understands how to make money is to spend money...not give it away! One also has the Revenue Sharing money they pay along with the Cap Tax.

      Delete
    21. Ken Hans, what is it with you you ask where are our studs on the Farm.
You said, "So Reed where are all these stud players on the farm? I don't see any!"
I say, there are guys that could be studs but until they are on the team they are not.
Forget it! I waist my time and so do you Hans...again, I look at the future you look at the now...the two don't fit.
How many teams in the AL have stating pitchers that don't have off and on games within a year...try 0!

      Delete
    22. I have to agree with Reed on this one. He has said many times that Hal wouldn't spend but he has always said that when the millions upon millions come off the books after the next two or three seasons that he would reinvest some, not all, of that money via the free agency market. I know this because I've said the same thing.

And we all know, and have all agreed with you on numerous occasions, that the Yankees needed pitching this offseason and we all watched as Cashman screwed the pooch. All of us.

      Delete
    23. Reed doesn't see it that way Burch. He says one thing one day and another thing another day. I have been consistent from day 1 not only about Cashman as well as Hal and the farm system. The farm is slightly better than average and noting more. He has busted on 1st rd picks like Brackman and Bichette and Heahcott. To be successful you need to hit on first rd picks but you and Reed give this guy a free pass constantly. Hal isn't spending any money unless Murdoch lays the hammer down on him about lack of TV revenue. Then he might dip into the secondary FA market. The days are over of the big time FA and if you think this schmuck is going to put out $350-400 mill for Harper you're all in delusionalville

  4. My list of Farm untouchables; Mateo 2nd, Dermis Garcia 3rd, Gary Sanchez C, Luis Torrens C, Wilkerman Garcia SS, Domingo "Ace" Acevedo RHP, (?)Jacob Lindgren LHP, Bryan Mitchell RHP, Drew Finley RHP, James Kaprielian RHP, Cale Coshow RHP.
I know, it is a long one with NO outfielders. We have a bunch of Brett clones and Judge, who may make it as a hitter and maybe not.
Agree or not, your choice! Add to it if you wish!

    1. No Aaron Judge as an untouchable? No Ian Clarkin? No Miguel Andujar?

Bryan Mitchell shouldn't be untouchable in my eyes and neither should Coshow. Finley probably shouldn't either but he isn't worth arguing about and looking up stats to me ;)

    2. I'm not sold on Judge yet. All the tapes I see show him with to many holes in his swing. He is getting somewhat better but he seams as if he goes up to the plate with NO plain at all. Not saying he is a waist...yet!
