Yanks Win Rainout Makeup,5-4

      Before heading to Baltimore, the Yankees stopped off in Detroit to play a rainout makeup game against the Tigers. New York sent Michael Pineda to the mound to face Detroit. Normally, I would give you the pitcher's season stats right here, but I have run out of ways to describe how bad Michael Pineda is this season, so I am not going to bother. The Tigers countered with 25-year-old left-hander Matt Boyd, making just his second start of the season. Boyd was one of the return pieces in the David Price trade made by Detroit at the trade deadline last season. By the start of tomorrow nights game in Baltimore, the Yankees will have played in three cities and two countries in three nights. And if they wanted to put an end to their losing streak, they would need their offense to wake up, and a quality outing from the struggling Pineda. And that is exactly what they got.
     For the first time since baseball was invented, Michael Pineda worked a scoreless first three  innings. The Tigers scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning where Miguel Cabrera led off the inning with an opposite field double, eventually scoring when Justin Upton hit a two out broken bat single to right. As for the Yankees, they didn't put a runner on base against Boyd until the top of the fifth when Chase Headley drew a walk, breaking up Boyd's bid for a perfect game. The no-hitter and shut out were spoiled in the top of the sixth inning when Austin Romine led off the frame with a double, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jacoby Ellsbury that tied the game at one.
     Articulating his desire to win tonight, Girardi pulled Pineda in the bottom of the sixth, despite the rare but much needed quality outting by Big Mike. Pineda left with a strong final line of 5.2 innings pitched, allowing just the one run on seven hits, punching out seven. Delin Betances came on in relief and got out of the inning by getting Justin Upton to pop out to centerfield.
    The rookie Matt Boyd's night would come to an end in the top of the seventh inning. After allowing back to back hits by Rodriguez and Headley to lead off the frame, Auston Romine reached base on a fielder's choice. The recent call-up Rob Refsnyder then smacked a single to left, scoring Headley, advancing Romine to second and giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Bobby Parnell, who replaced Boyd, immediately allowed a single that ricocheted off the shortstop Jose Iglesias's glove, scoring Romine and advanced Refsnyder to second, 3-1 Yankees. Then, after Kyle Ryan replaced Parnell, Jacoby Ellsbury lined a triple to right field that scored both runners and extended the Yankee lead to four, 5-1.
      No-run DMC would uncharacteristically struggle tonight as the Yankees tried to hold on to their losing streak ending lead. Betances would give one of those runs back to Detroit in the bottom of the seventh inning. The 6'8" right hander led off the inning by walking Jared Saltalamacchia, who advanced to second on a wild pitch to the next batter Mike Aviles. Betances then served up a double to the afore mentioned Aviles that scored Saltalamacchia, inching the Tigers closer, 5-2. Betances would get out of the inning without any further damage when he struck out the next three batters. Andrew Miller, too, allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth when Ian Kinsler doubled in Miguel Cabrera, 5-3. Then, Aroldis Chapman, after giving up a run himself, got Miguel Cabrera to ground out to second to end the game and put the Yankees back into the win column.
     The New York Yankees head to Baltimore tomorrow to begin a three-game series with their division rival, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM ET.
