TGP Prospects Month Top 29 Prospects Lit - #25 Jordan Montgomery

The New York Yankees made left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery their fourth round pick in the 2014 MLB First Year Players Draft after drafting him out of the University of South Carolina. Montgomery is the typical large-framed pitcher the Yankees have seemingly fallen in love with as the southpaw stands at 6'5" and weighs in at 225 lbs.

Montgomery is one of those starting pitchers that may take a couple seasons to get to the Major Leagues but he's taken great strides in Tampa and Charleston. Montgomery is 22-years old now and has thrown 134 innings at the A-Ball level with a sub-three ERA. Montgomery was a polished college pitcher after being drafted as a Junior and could be a quick mover through the Yankees system.

It is not inconceivable that Montgomery could start the season in Double-A with the Trenton Thunder next season and could be in Triple-A by the end of the season giving him a 2017 ETA, or sooner.

TGP Prospects Month Top 29 Prospects List - #28

Yesterday we kicked off Prospect Month and we kicked off our reveal of the Top 29 (or 30 if you read the article) Prospects List like we do every day of Prospects Month. Today will be no different as we take the next step towards the top with the #28 prospect in the Yankees system, Mr. Austin DeCarr. DeCarr was drafted in the 2014 MLB First Year Players Draft out of Salisbury Prep School. DeCarr decided to head to the Prep School rather than college after undergoing a surgery on his elbow to remove bone spurs and thought it would be the best case scenario for himself and his future, seems like it worked out well for him.

DeCarr is another one of those big framed pitchers the Yankees love to draft standing at 6'3" and weighing in at 220 lbs. DeCarr uses that big body to throw in the 92-94 MPH range and can touch 96 when he has to. DeCarr also has a power curveball and a changeup, albeit raw at this point. You have to expect some control and command issues, especially with secondary pitches, with "high school" pitchers though but it was good enough for DeCarr to land on our Top Prospects list at the #28 position.

30. James Pazos

DeCarr was much higher on the list but as you can see by the stat line the righty missed the 2015 season due to injury. DeCarr is finally deemed healthy after having Tommy John surgery in 2014 and should be back sometime in 2016 as he looks to climb back to the top of this list.

Weekly Check In: Eric Ruth

As you may or may not know by now we like to leave Thursday wide open and as much of a revolving door as the Yankees bullpen was more much of the first half of the season. We’ve checked in on Ian Clarkin, Austin DeCarr, Austin Romine, Kyle Roller, Tyler Austin, Ramon Flores, Mason Williams, Slade Heathcott, Miguel Sulbaran, Brady Lail and a slew of other Yankees prospects and today we check in on a new guy, Eric Ruth.

Before the 2015 season Ruth was considered to be an organizational type prospect and one that I never really paid attention to much. Much like Jaron Long in the 2014 season I never really knew the name until Long and Ruth made me recognize their names and Ruth has done just that this season for Trenton. Now hopefully with his successes and maybe a weekly check in or two from us you all can know his name too and know just what he brings to the table for the Yankees.

Weekly Check In: Austin DeCarr

We’re going to take one more break from the TGP Daily Poll to catch up with another one of the top Yankees prospects, Mr. Austin DeCarr. DeCarr was drafted in the 2014 MLB First Year Players Draft out of college and immediately made many, if not all, Top 10 Yankees prospects lists before the season.

DeCarr is currently biding his time in  with the Staten Island Yankees waiting on his promotion and eventual call up to the major leagues. With stats like these it may not be long before he gets the call to the Charleston Riverdogs to continue his dream and his professional career.

I know we have gone prospect heavy this week on the blog and did a few of these weekly check in's but with the draft this week and all the focus being on the future of the club I figured why not. You guys have responded as well in the views department on the site so I can only assume you're enjoying it as much as I am.

Here is his stat line from his 2014 campaign:

Complete Look at the Yankees 2014 Draft Haul

In case you missed it here is the complete draft haul from the 2014 MLB First Year Player's Draft by the New York Yankees. Remember New York had a plan, and they executed that plan, to spend heavily on the international spending market in what was expected to be an extremely deep pool which led the team to draft more polished, older and advanced college players in the draft.

All in all New York drafted 39 players in the 2014 draft including 24 pitchers, nine infielders, four outfielders and two catchers. New York went college heavy as we said drafting 32 players out of college with just seven players coming out of High School including Austin DeCarr. One of those players drafted was the son of the great Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, Marian Rivera Jr., after the team signed Josh Pettitte, son of Andy Pettitte, in the 2013 MLB Draft.

The Yankees top pick, Jacob Lindgren, is already in the major leagues while the likes of Jonathan Holder, Jordan Foley, Jordan Montgomery, Mark Payton and DeCarr are making great strides in the Yankees system.

Here is the list:

Looking Back at the Yankees 2014 Draft

With the 2015 MLB First Year Player’s Draft just one day away I thought now would be a good time to take a look back at the haul the Yankees got in the 2014 version of the draft. It’s a complete crap shoot after the 10th round, or probably earlier to be honest, but I decided to recap the Yankees Top 10 picks in last year’s draft. Remember that the Yankees forfeited multiple first round picks last season when they signed Carlos Beltran and Jacoby Ellsbury. Here’s the list:

2nd Round - LHP Jacob Lindgren (Mississippi State)
3rd Round - RHP Austin DeCarr (Salisbury High School)
4th Round - LHP Jordan Montgomery (South Carolina)
5th Round - RHP Jordan Foley (Central Michigan)
6th Round - RHP Jonathan Holder (Mississippi State)
7th Round - CF Mark Payton (Texas)
8th Round - 1B Connor Spencer (University of California Irvine)
9th Round - SS Vince Conde (Vanderbilt)
10th Round - 2B Ty McFarland (James Madison University)

The Yankees currently showcase Lindgren in their major league bullpen while DeCarr skyrocketed towards the top of many prospects lists before this season. While Montgomery, Foley and Holder have been quiet the team has enjoyed more than they could have expected from Payton in his short professional career. The team will absolutely need more than one calendar year to judge how well they did in the draft obviously but for what the Yankees had to work with the early results look quite impressive for New York. Let’s hope they are twice as effective in this year’s draft with three picks in the first 60 picks overall.

New York, you’re on the clock.... almost.

Greedy Pinstripes Top 28 Prospects List: #16

Prospects Month is in full swing and we're already up to our 16th best prospect in the farm system, Austin DeCarr.

Here is the write up from Kyle McDaniel on DeCarr:

Austin DeCarr, RHP Video: DeCarr was the Yankees 2nd pick this year, signing in the 3rd round for an above slot $1 million after being in contention for their first pick, which ended up being Lindgren. DeCarr is an interesting case as a post-grad student who blew up on the showcase circuit the summer after his senior year. The Yankees tried to sign him as an undrafted free agent last summer, but DeCarr wanted to play the year out and see where it got him. His stuff improved in the spring, sitting 91-94 and hitting 96 mph with an above average to plus curveball, but his fringy changeup and command wavered at times while his feel for the curveball also came and went.  There’s a chance for two plus pitches and a mid-rotation starter, but DeCarr is a year older than his prep counterparts and looked more like a late inning reliever to some scouts this spring.

Yankees 2014 Draft Report Card

Baseball America has released their 2014 MLB Draft report card for the New York Yankees and it can be seen HERE. If you have a subscription to BA you can view, unfortunately you cannot see much on the free side of the wall. Check it out if you can.

Jacob Lindgren and high school pitcher Austin DeCarr garnered the most attention on the write up which makes sense since New York went for polished college players in this draft.

ICYMI: Yankees Draft Signing Updates

The deadline has come and past for teams to sign their draft picks from the 2014 MLB First Year Player's Draft and the Yankees signed a ton of talent this year. The Yankees signed each of their Top 15 draft picks, although they did miss out on Mariano Rivera Jr. this time around. Either way here is a quick recap in case you missed it late last week and over the weekend.

If there is no assignment then the player did not sign. Really disappointing that the Yankees didn't go after much high upside high school talent in this draft. What's more disappointing is that while high school pitcher Austin DeCarr signed other notable players like Garrett Cave, Will Toffey, Christopher Hudgins, Will Gaddis, Cameron Warren, and Madison Stokes did not sign.

Here's the complete list:
