Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles 4/7

Saturday afternoon baseball in the Bronx between the New York Yankees and one of their division rivals in the Baltimore Orioles. It just doesn’t get any better than this, I don’t care what anyone has to say about it either. In the start this afternoon the Yankees will send Sonny Gray to the mound to face off with an old foe in Chris Tillman for the Orioles. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB Network. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast on WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles 4/7

The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles will be back at it again in the Bronx here in just a few hours in the third of their four-game weekend set inside Yankee Stadium. We have been spoiled with a couple good pitching matchups thus far in the series and today’s battle should be no different with Sonny Gray taking the mound for the Yankees against Chris Tillman for the Orioles. The Yankees let one get away Thursday night in what looked to be a winnable game, let’s not do that again today in this one. Okay? Thanks in advance.

Gray will look to last longer than his first start in 2018 against the Toronto Blue Jays where he lasted just four-plus innings in an eventual Yankees loss. Gray himself allowed just one run on seven hits and left with a lead, but the Yankees bullpen eventually blew the hold and the game. Gray will look to be sharper and more economical with his pitches this afternoon in the Bronx.

Tillman was also less than sharp in his first start of the season against the Houston Astros and will look to be much better tonight against the Yankees. In that start Tillman allowed four runs in four innings of work taking the loss.

The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET pm ET inside Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB Network. You can also follow along with MLB TV, the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast on WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Enjoy the game, give no mercy to these O’s, and Go Yankees!!

Shohei Says No Way to New York, Now What?

The Shohei Otani ship has sailed Yankees fans but that does not mean this offseason has to be a disaster for Brian Cashman and company. The Yankees have a plan and a young stable of starting pitchers ready to start the 2018 season including Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray and Jordan Montgomery with the likes of Justus Sheffield, Chance Adams and others waiting in the wings down in the minor leagues. The Yankees need one more starter, if at all, next season and that one starter will likely be CC Sabathia. Just for fun though, and for the sake of not assuming that it will simply be Sabathia just because of old loyalties and such, let’s take a look at the free agent class of starting pitchers to see if any other arms should entice the Yankees.

First and foremost, you can erase any ideas of expensive arms like Jake Arrieta, Jeremy Hellickson or Yu Darvish joining the Yankees staff in 2017. Those three arms will look to cash in big time this offseason via free agency and neither will likely fit into the austerity plans the New York Yankees have going forward leaving a lackluster list of potential arms. Just some of the arms available for New York include Anibal Sanchez, John Lackey, Ubaldo Jimenez, Ricky Nolasco, Chris Tillman, Andrew Cashner, Jason Vargas, Hector Santiago, Lance Lynn, Clay Buchholz, Jaime Garcia, Miguel Gonzalez, Alex Cobb and Bud Norris to name a few.

Out of that group of names obviously Alex Cobb is the most intriguing, the problem with Cobb though is that he is tied to draft pick compensation after being offered a qualifying offer this winter by Tampa Bay. That should in itself rule him out in my book, although the Yankees do have a great farm system and may be willing to part with a first-round pick for Cobb’s services. Who knows. All I know is I want no part of any other name on that list. It is either Cobb and the first-round draft pick, CC Sabathia or bust if you’re asking me. If not, then I would be more than comfortable with letting the Yankees ride with who they currently have and bringing up another young kid from the minor leagues to battle it out during spring training camp.

Also, don’t forget about Michael Pineda even though he is likely to miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June of 2017. He may be back in August or September of this coming season but to bank on that would be foolish for New York. Pineda may be an absolute steal for the 2018 season though, so a two-year deal is and should always be on the table in my opinion.

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles 6/10

Saturday night baseball in the Bronx, let’s get to it as the New York Yankees remain home to play host to Buck Showalter and the Baltimore Orioles. In this second game of their three-game weekend set the Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound to face off with Chris Tillman for the O’s. The game will be played at 7:15 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on FOX. You can also follow along on the radio with WFAN.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles 6/10

The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles will be back at it again tonight in the Bronx with a special Saturday night edition of their new rivalry. The Yankees love their Saturday afternoon games, and truth be told I do too, but tonight these two teams will face off in prime time on FOX. In the matchup the Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound, the future is now, while the Orioles will counter with Chris Tillman, the now was a couple years ago apparently.

Severino heads into tonight’s start on a streak of having thrown three straight quality starts including a victory 11 days ago against these same Baltimore Orioles. In Severino’s last start the right-hander took a no-decision against the Toronto Blue Jays despite allowing just two runs in seven innings.

Tillman missed the first month of the 2017 season on the disabled list and has spent the rest of the season trying to work himself back into the groove, a trend that hopefully continues tonight. Tillman has not won a game since his first start on May 7, five straight starts without a victory, so it is the Yankees mission tonight to push that to six straight if at all possible.

The game will be played at 7:15 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on FOX. I believe when FOX is involved that the games are blacked out everywhere else including MLB TV but I cannot swear to that either way. Anyway you should still be able to follow along in your cars and on the radio with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Enjoy the game, beat the O’s and as always…. Go Yankees!

AL Wild Card Game Thread: Baltimore Orioles @ Toronto Blue Jays 10/4

Here we go ladies and gentleman, baseball is back and the postseason has begun. The New York Yankees did not qualify for the postseason unfortunately in 2016 but three teams from their AL East Division did including both of tonight’s participants in the American League Wild Card Game, the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays. In the start tonight the Orioles will send Chris Tillman to the mound to face off with Marcus Stroman for the Blue Jays. Not that you need a reminder by now but this is a one-game playoff game that decides it all, win or go home. The game will take place at 8:05 pm ET inside the Rogers Centre and can be seen nationally on TBS.

I don’t have a horse in this race so for the first time in 162 games I’m simply going to just sit back and enjoy baseball. You know, the way it should be done. Good luck to both team’s tonight and may the better team, manager, pitching and offense win. Enjoy.

AL Wild Card Game Preview: Baltimore Orioles @ Toronto Blue Jays 10/4

The Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays are preparing for their AL Wild Card showdown tonight inside Toronto’s Rogers Centre in what should be another exciting matchup between the two clubs. These two teams are both in the American League East Division meaning that they have seen each other plenty over the course of the 2016 season. There will be little in the way of surprises tonight in Toronto which could make for a strategical game called by both managers like we haven’t seen before. The game will live and die by the pitching though like it always has in the history of Major League Baseball and tonight’s pitching matchup should not disappoint as the Baltimore Orioles send Chris Tillman to the mound to square off with the Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman.

Here we go.

Tillman will start the AL Wild Card Game for the Orioles with Baltimore's season on the line. Tillman has faced the Blue Jays four times this season already and has posted a 1-0 record with a 3.63 ERA.

Stroman is easily the Blue Jays ace and with the season on the line he is the only option for Toronto to start this game tonight despite his struggles against Baltimore this season. Stroman has also made four starts against the Orioles this season and has posted a 1-2 record with a 7.04 ERA in that span, ouch.

The game will be played at 8:05 pm ET inside the Rogers Centre and can be seen nationally on TBS. While it’s a shame that the New York Yankees can’t be in it this season the playoffs should still be fun and entertaining for all and that all begins tonight. Enjoy the game everyone.

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles 7/21

Here we go Yankees family, it is game time between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles. This afternoon marks the finale of the four-game set between these two clubs and it would be awfully nice to see the Yankees add another win against both an AL East rival and Buck Showalter specifically. Donned with the task of getting this victory for New York is CC Sabathia who will look to turn things around this afternoon against an opponent who has not lost against the AL East all season in Chris Tillman. The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen both on the YES Network and MLB TV.

I don’t know if this is a huge selling point but the Yankees welcome the San Francisco Giants to the Bronx this weekend for a three-game interleague series. To see any of these games live click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog but be warned and by at your own risk. San Francisco sends Madison Bumbarner to the mound Friday, Jeff Samardzija to the mound on Saturday and Johnny Cueto to the mound on Sunday. This has all the makings of being a very frustrating series but the team has to get this afternoon’s game out of the way first before they worry about that.

Follow along during this game, any of the San Francisco series or any game all season long by giving @GreedyStripes a follow on Twitter or by liking us on Facebook. Let’s see if we get “Good CC” or “Bad CC” this afternoon in the Bronx. Go Yankees.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles 7/21

The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles will finish off their four game set this afternoon in the Bronx with one more intense pitching matchup. Buck Showalter has done all he could do this series to mess with the Yankees and to tweak his team to optimize efficiency against the Yankees and it simply hasn’t worked out as well as he could have expected to date. CC Sabathia, who the Yankees will send out today for the finale, will look to add a bit of salt to that wound while Showalter saved the best for last in Chris Tillman for the Orioles.

Sabathia was one of the Yankees best starting pitchers for much of this season but for the last five starts the Yankees veteran lefty has been anything but rejuvenated. CC allowed five runs and nine hits in 5.1 innings in his last start against the Boston Red Sox which ballooned his ERA to 7.94 since June 22. Ouch. Over/under two weeks before he is on the DL for a knee problem? I’m going under.

Tillman heads into this start fresh off his 13th win and will look to keep his career year going this afternoon against the Yankees. Tillman has not lost to the American League East this season posting a 6-0 record and the Orioles are even better in those games he started posting a 9-0 record.

The game will be played at 1:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. As much as I like beating up on the Orioles I hate losing to the Orioles twice as much. No game is ever easy against these guys so take your losses on the chin and get the heck out of town. Win one for Buck! Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles 6/3

The New York Yankees can make up some of the ground they have lost in the AL East Division race by beating the teams they are supposed to beat on paper and by beating the teams in front of them. One of those latter teams that currently sit in front of them in the standings is one of the teams the Bronx Bombers face off with head-to-head with tonight, the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees will look to scratch and claw their way out of the cellar of the division tonight when they send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound to face off against the Orioles starter Chris Tillman. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Oriole Park and Camden Yards and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

The Yankees have these three games in Baltimore before returning home to the Bronx to play host to Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of California of Los Angeles of Orange County of Disney Land. To see any of these games live in the Bronx click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog and have your tickets in hand for when the team returns home to the Bronx. Until then follow along and root for the team from afar on Twitter with us by giving @GreedyStripes a follow.

I love watching Nathan Eovaldi pitch so I’m going to get to it. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles 5/3

Too many off days to begin the season, I need some baseball. Tonight we get baseball back as the New York Yankees make the trip to Camden Yards to face off with the Baltimore Orioles in an AL East division matchup. The Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound looking to turn things around not only for himself but for the team as well while the Orioles counter with their defacto ace Chris Tillman. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Oriole Park and Camden Yards and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox return to the Bronx this weekend for another three-game set, this time at Yankee Stadium. To see any of these games live be sure to click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog to visit Ticket Monster and snag a pair before they are all gone. Until then you can follow along on Twitter with us by giving a follow or tweet to @GreedyStripes. We’re around for most every game until we get frustrated and bang our keyboards until they don’t work anymore so check out the page.

Chris Tillman is ready and so is the Yankees offense so let’s get this thing done. Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles 5/3

The New York Yankees were swept away by the Boston Red Sox this weekend, how sweep it was not, but luckily for the team they had an off day to lick their wounds and mentally prepare for another tough division foe in the Baltimore Orioles. The season is not over Yankees fans, news flash I know, but it can be rather soon with this series and another Red Sox series looming in the Bronx over the weekend. There is already pressure on every Yankees player every at bat and with every pitch thrown and with every loss the pressure gets more and more immense. Donned with the task of not only getting the Yankees a win but alleviating some of that pressure is Luis Severino while the Orioles will counter with one of their best in Chris Tillman.

Severino has not had the start to the season he nor the Yankees would have liked after a strong debut in 2015. Severino has shown poor command of not only his fastball but of his slider as well and has been seen shaking off veteran catcher Brian McCann far too much. That shaking off landed Severino on the bench in his last start after just three innings due to him giving up six earned runs on seven hits in yet another bad start for the rookie right-hander.

Tillman started Opening Day for the Orioles but has not lived up to the distinction and the hype that usually comes along with that honor thus far this season. Tillman did have an impressive start last time out against the Tampa Bay Rays but has looked inconsistent for much of the season, a trend that he hopefully gets back to tonight in Camden Yards.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Oriole Park and Camden Yards and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. The last place team in the American League East Division against the first place team in the division. With this series this week and another Red Sox series looming in the distance this weekend New York is primed to make a move back towards the top of the division. Whether they are ready and able to do it is a whole other story unfortunately. It all starts tonight in Baltimore.

Go Yankees!

Recap: Yankees 4, Orioles 3

Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a milestone home run and the Yankees snuck past the Orioles, 4-3, on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.

It's Gone: Rodriguez lined a Chris Tillman offering over the center-field wall in the third for his 661st career homer, passing Giants great Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time list. The solo blast came two innings after A-Rod was robbed of another long ball by the Orioles' Delmon Young, though Rodriguez was still credited with a run-scoring sac fly on the play.

Mini Tex Messages: It's been awhile since Mark Teixeira drove in a run with a normal base-hit, but the veteran infielder did just that in this one. In fact, he did it twice -- singling in Brett Gardner following Rodriguez's RBI in the first and recording the go-ahead double later in the fifth.

Eovaldi Okay: Nathan Eovaldi served up a pair of solo home runs to Jimmy Paredes and Caleb Joseph in the contest's early stages, and frankly wasn't very sharp on the evening. Nonetheless, he was able to hold the Orioles to just three earned runs in his 5 2/3 innings -- striking out three for his third victory of the year.

This Bullpen, Wow: The Yankees' relief core continued its amazing start to the season with 3 1/3 innings of no-hit ball, allowing just one man to reach when Steve Pearce walked in the ninth. Justin Wilson logged the last out of the sixth as well as all three in the seventh, with Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller easily closing it out from there.

An Interesting Escape: The Orioles had runners on the corners with one out against Eovaldi in the fifth, and with the red-hot Adam Jones at the plate, seemed bound to take the lead. Eovaldi stopped them from doing so, however, with a pick-off at first and a groundout from Jones -- keeping the game even despite an ugly performance in the frame.

Next Up: The Yankees will look to put together a winning streak on Friday when they battle the Orioles again in the Bronx -- beginning at 7:05 p.m. ET and airing live on the YES Network. Adam Warren (2-1, 4.78 ERA) will get the start for the Yankees hoping for a third straight quality outing, opposing always-dangerous O's right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (3-1, 2.59 ERA).

The Daily Dozen - August 13, 2014

The Daily Baker's Dozen - August 13th, 2014 - No Pine Tar Allowed Edition
(Twelve Thirteen Takeaways from Tonight's Game vs. the Fake New York Yankees)

1. Everyone knows the Baltimore Orioles want to be the New York Yankees.  They are so jealous...they can't stand the fact that the Yankees were the original Orioles and that Babe Ruth, a native of Baltimore made it big in the Big Apple instead of the Big...well, Biggest City in Maryland.  They have even gone as far as to go out and get a former Yankee manager in Buck Showalter to man their helm.  Well...la-di-freaking-da...say one more thing about Jeter! I dares ya!
Thanks for the memories Buck! (Photo Credit: Washington Post)

2. Michael Pineda is BACK!  And boy was he...he made his first start in the majors since April 23rd, which was shortly after his Pine-tar-gate (everything has to have "gate" added to the end...) incident in Baaaaaaahston.

3. So which part of Mark Teixeira's body will he injure next?  Marky Mark and the Funky Bones was back out there tonight, which begs the question, for how long this time?  Oh Teixeira, you're on the Mark!

4. Pineda was on a 80 to 90 pitch count limit.  What if he got to 80 pitches and was throwing a no-hitter, would the Binder take him out?  Well, we got that answer as after 67 pitches and 4 PERFECT innings he was removed from the game by Girardi for....Betances?  In the 5th? Whaaaaa....?
Right on Burch!

5. Of course the .176 hitter breaks up the double perfect game.  Stephen Drew got the first hit of the game off of Chris Tillman in the 3rd.

6. Francisco Cervelli was an unlikely power source tonight.  He doubled his total home run for the season and increased his RBI output by 33%.  That would be more impressive if his total numbers weren't 2 home runs and 8 RBI.

7. Give the Governor a HARUMPH!  Did anyone else hear the Orioles fans booing Derek Jeter every time he came to the plate?  They might be the only ones to do so on a regular basis this season.  Showalter must be rubbing off on them.  If you didn't get the tag line, watch Blazing Saddles and get back to me...
"I didn't get a HARUMPH outta that guy..." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTmfwklFM-M)

8. Nelson Cruz breaks up the perfect game for Pineda in the 5th.  I'm sorry to say that it was all my fault. #Knepper'sFault.  See my tweet after the 4th inning below:
Sorry Pineda...truly sorry...

9. So there was a "batter's interference" on Stephen Drew in the 6th inning?  What exactly is batter's interference.  What a freaking crappy call...he was directly over the chalk!  Totally changed the game...umps blew that one!

10. Joe Girardi promptly got ejected after arguing the call.  For once, I agree with the Binder...you suck Jerry Davis!  You be the judge on this one...
The ball is clearly passed Drew at this point and he is DIRECTLY
above the chalk...(Photo Credit: MLB.com from Video)

11. Betances is to Robertson what Rivera was to Wetteland in 1996.  The only difference however is that Rivera wasn't brought in for 3 innings in the 5th inning of a game.  What the heck was that all about???  That 3rd inning proved to be the death nail for the Yankees as Dellin left a hanging curve out there for Schoop to tie the game at 2.

12. Jeter was 0 for 4 tonight and is in a mini-slump if you will.  He if 4 for 20 in his last 7 days batting .200 with only 1 RBI.  Maybe it's time for a few days off for the Captain.  Maybe give Drew some time at Short?

13. In the "That Escalated Quickly" category...Adam Jones hits a 3-run bomb to put the Orioles up 5-2 in the 8th inning effectively ending the Yankees chances for a win and potentially putting away the AL East title for the O's.

Betances, Kelley Collapse in 8th as Yankees Lose Heartbreaker to Orioles

Michael Pineda threw 5 innings of one-run ball and Francisco Cervelli took Chris Tillman (7 IP, 2 ER) deep for a two-run home run, but due to the late and sudden struggles of the Dellin Betances/Shawn Kelley duo the Yankees found a way to lose to the Orioles tonight, 5-3, in the series finale at Camden Yards.

After Cervelli launched that homer in the top of the third, surprisingly, the Yanks had a comfortable 2-0 lead, one that'd hold for a while thanks largely to the two-hit, four-strikeout performance of the aforementioned Pineda.

Nonetheless, with one out in the eighth frame Betances, who had retired the previous seven batters without issue, surrendered a solo shot to O's Second Basemen Johnathan Schoop, tying the contest in an unexpected way.

Also, Schoop's blast allowed Baltimore to bring the top of their lineup to the plate, an unfortunate happening that, following a hit and a walk off Kelley, eventually set up a go-ahead three-run shot by Adam Jones to pretty much end the competition.

Yes, in the top of the ninth New York scored on a Chase Headley groundout, but since that obviously wasn't enough to even the score the Yankees did fall in the end, the fourth straight game that's happened.

Nick's Pick's: Yankees VS Orioles 8/13/14

Monday's game was disgusting to say the least. Things looked like they were going really well with a Yankee lead and Capuano pitching his best; then disaster struck. One pitch to Chris Davis later, the Yankees found themselves down and out. Tonight is a new game though, and after the rain postponing last nights game the rest might help provide a plus for this battered Yankees team.

Michael Pineda is coming back for the Yankees tonight, starting his first game since April 23 and the Yankees have never needed him more than now. Hopefully the Pineda who pitched to a 1.83 ERA in four starts can bring in a win tonight. The Orioles will be countering with Chris Tillman, which is bad news for Yankee hitters. Tillman has been dealing as of late and since the All-Star game Tillman is pitching with a 2.30 ERA. Looking at pick's for tonight's game were hard, mostly because who knows how well Pineda will pitch and if the Yankees will even hit off of Tillman. Hoping for the best, but here we go.

Top Pitcher: I am going to stick with my huge support for the starters and predict that Pineda comes back strong and gives the Yankees six strong innings while racking up seven strikeouts. He will give up two runs, but by limiting the runners on base I think he will provide enough for a win.

Top Hitter: This will be tough, as Yankee hitters are struggling but I think we will see Jacoby Ellsbury help tonight. Ellsbury has faced Tilllman enough to know how he pitches and I think he will go 2-5 with a double and two RBI's. That pick rides on a lot of luck and a little fairy dust.

Clutch Performer: I have went defense before with my clutch performer and tonight look for Francisco Cervelli to provide some amazing defense behind the plate. Pineda needs his catcher to call a great game, and Cervelli knows how much the Yankees need this game and a healthy Pineda. I can see his defense being the difference maker tonight.

I am a glass half full kind of guy, but at the same time I know it has water in it regardless. Whether you call me a realist or an optimist I have to go with the Yankees. There is no way we can lose tonight, but if we do the world will still turn. The division hangs on every game, and tonight the Yankees will walk away with a crazy 4-3 win.

I figured I would take this moment to express my thoughts on the passing of legend Robin Williams. Williams was not only my idol, but was an idol to many around the world. His loss has hit me hard, and knowing he is gone is still surreal to me. What he did in his life is something no one can match, and I will forever be grateful that I had the opportunity to watch him everyday. The Yankees know about legends, and Robin Williams was the Babe Ruth of comedy; no one can or will come close to his greatness. Here is a clip with Williams talking about his experience at Yankee Stadium.

Greene Comes Up Huge For Yankees in Shutout of Orioles

Over the last few weeks, all any of us have heard from the media is that the Yankees are done without four of their five starting pitchers.

Those four arms, Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka, and Ivan Nova, are a lot better than the Yanks' current group of Chase Whitley, Shane Greene, David Phelps, and Brandon McCarthy, although lately that hasn't been too clear, with the latter quad each tossing quality outings over the last few months.

Despite that, it's unlikely that this trend will last forever, a message that again failed to reach the Bombers' backups today, with the aforementioned Greene shutting out the Orioles for 7 1/3 innings as the Pinstripes won a game they really had to 3-0.

In his fun-to-watch, 22-out performance, Greene rarely got into trouble, retiring the first 10 men he faced and not allowing a hit until the bottom of the fifth.

In that frame and the next, the O's did manage to get runners to third, an effort that would prove worthless due a pair of threat-ending strikeouts of Nick Hundley and Nelson Cruz.

That latter K of Cruz, one of nine Greene had on the day, came on a nice slider in the dirt, pretty much ending the Orioles' day of competitiveness, eventually causing the always-tough Chris Tillman (6.2 IP, 3 ER) to take his fifth loss of the season.

Over on the offensive side of things, as expected, the Yankees again didn't play that well, only collecting three runs thanks to a duo of RBI Doubles from Mark Teixeira and Jacoby Ellsbury along with an RBI Single from Derek Jeter.

Still, what they did do was good enough to get the W, something they obviously really needed, as another defeat this afternoon would've dropped them below the .500 mark.

Tanaka Solid, But No Offense Hurts Yankees in Another Loss To Baltimore

While Yankees' ace Masahiro Tanaka is definitely a talented starting pitcher, he is by no means perfect.

The 25-year-old Japanese Rookie, 11-1 with a 1.99 ERA going into today, usually makes a couple of mistakes in each of his outings, something that hasn't really cost him yet.

Well, in this afternoon's rubber game against the Orioles it did, as Tanaka struggled to get big outs in a surprising, 8-0 loss.

For most of his performance, the possible future Cy Young did cruise, although a second inning homer from Johnathan Schoop and another pair of runs late ended up ruining his chance of winning, as the youngster surrendered 3 trips around the bases over a solid 7 frames.

During the outing, Tanaka struck out just 6, helping raise his still-good ERA to 2.11, now just the second best in the American League.

After his departure, despite his recent successes, Adam Warren allowed another 4 Baltimore runs, pretty much making the contest a blowout.

To make things even worse, Mark Teixeira left the ballgame in the bottom of the eighth after getting hit in the foot, although later on an X-Ray would come back negative, the only good thing that happened to the offense in the contest.

Yep, for the second day in a row the Yanks' bats fell silent to a less-than-amazing O's starter, collecting just 4 hits over 7 innings off Chris Tillman.

The performance of Tillman, who came into the outing with a 4.82 ERA, clinched for Baltimore another series win in the Bronx, their second already in 2014.

Interestingly, in both sets the Bombers actually took the opener, with them then being outscored 33-10 in the other four contests, a big reason why they are now just tied for second place in the AL East.
