This Day in New York Yankees History 6/13: Roger Clemens 300th Win & 4000th K

On this day in 2003 the Yankees Roger Clemens finally got his 300th victory of his career throwing 6.2 innings pitched in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The 40 year old Clemens would become only the 21st pitcher to ever win 300 games and the first since 1990. Clemens also got his 4,000th strikeout of his career joining Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136) as the only two members of the 4,000 strike out club.

Also on this day in 2001 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded Enrique Wilson and his .186 average to the Yankees for relief pitcher Damaso Marte and his 3-1 record and 2.50 ERA. The rest is history, although a right would be wronged in 2009.

Also on this day in 2001 in what should have started a fight the New York Yankees lost to the Montreal Expos in 12 innings after Mark Smith hit a "home run" that was clearly foul on replay. The Yankees would be forced to restore the missing screen on the bottom three feet of the fair side left field foul pole to keep this event from ever happening again. The section was originally removed so the fans sitting behind the pole would not have an obstructed view of the game.

Also on this day in 1994 Don Mattingly passed Yankees first baseman Wally Pipp for consecutive games played in a Yankees uniform. Mattingly played in 1,469 straight games and is only second to the Iron Horse Lou Gehrig and his 2,130 straight games.

Also on this day in 1957 another ugly brawl broke out when Art Ditmar threw a pitch behind Larry Doby's head. The White Sox infielder took exception to being thrown at and punched the Yankees pitcher Ditmar. Billy Martin, Walt Dropo, Bill Skowron, and Enos Slaughter were all in the middle of the fight.

Also on this day in 1948 the Yankees held Babe Ruth Day on the silver anniversary. Members of the 1923 team, his first team he played with in Yankee Stadium, and 49,641 fans sang Auld Lang Syne to Ruth. The #3 uniform was retired and immediately sent to Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame.

Also on this day in 1924 the Yankees outfielder Bob Meusel is hit by a pitch in the back by the Detroit Tigers Bert Cole and bedlam starts in the Bronx. The Yankees outfielder would throw his bat and charge the mound resulting in a nine inning brawl. The brawl included everyone from players, fans, and police and would see the Tigers forfeit the game 10-6 because the umpires could not clear the field after 30 minutes. Wow.

Finally on this day in 1921 Babe Ruth pitched the first five innings in a 11-8 victory over the Detroit Tigers for the first and only time this season. Ruth also hit two home runs in a season in which he broke his own major league record for home runs in a single season with 59. This would be the last time Ruth would pitch for the Yankees this season.

Tommy Kahnle is 2009 Damaso Marte

I told you guys I was feeling all nostalgic this morning and I wasn’t kidding. While I was doing some research for the “So it Seems…” post this morning a light bulb went off in my head when I was looking at the Yankees roster from 2009. There was one name that stood out and not necessarily all for good reasons either. Remember back in 2009 down the stretch when manager Joe Girardi would continue to run out Damaso Marte night in and night out despite him struggling for much of the 2009 season? Many thought Joe was crazy, including myself, until Damaso found the switch in the postseason and became absolutely dominant and unhittable? That kind of sounds like someone else on the 2017 Yankees squad doesn’t it. Remember how bad Tommy Kahnle pitched after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox in a pre-July 31st trade? Where would the Yankees be right now without Kahnle’s contributions this postseason? Let’s analyze and compare.

Marte’s Regular Season Stats for 2009:

It is like night and day, except these two stat lines are still eerily similar. I mean Kahnle was better than Marte was during the regular season but Kahnle also had a smaller sample size. Kahnle struggled down the stretch and seemingly was close to falling out of favor with Girardi before erupting in the postseason. It is funny how that works out sometimes, huh? If Kahnle wants to be the 2017 version of Damaso Marte back in 2009, more power to him. Just bring me a ring! I thought this was an interesting comparison and I wanted to bring it to you this morning to read. Enjoy and enjoy your Friday!

I Feel Bad for This Player: 2015 Edition

Earlier in the week I wrote an article about the superstition I had concerning the players I put on my desktop of my PC at home. It seems that every season since 2009 whoever is on my desktop has a healthy and productive season from AJ Burnett in 2009, Derek Jeter in 2012 and Masahiro Tanaka for 2015. There also, and I don’t purposely go out of my way to do this, seems to always be a player that I just harp on and harp on and beg to get lost coming to the stadium so Joe Girardi doesn’t put them into the game. It was Chris Capuano last year, it was Andruw Jones for a couple years, Chris Stewart comes to mind and for much of the 2009 season it was Damaso Marte. Who will it be in 2015? If I’m guessing, and I am, it’s going to be Stephen Drew.

Mark Teixeira is going to need a day here and there when he rips the skin around his fingernail fixing his hair but I have come to expect it at this point. Ivan Nova is going to have growing pains coming back from Tommy John surgery and the only consistent part of his game is going to be his inconsistency, you expect that as well. Alex Rodriguez is going to show at times that he basically hasn’t played for two seasons, has two bum hips and is a 40 year old player at the bat and in the field, he didn’t offer himself that ridiculous contract and would have been a fool to turn it down. Drew though won’t have that “I missed half the season because I turned down a huge qualifying offer because I have an idiot for an agent named Scott Boras” excuse and will have to produce and produce right away.

Like I said I don’t go out of my way to pick a player every single season and go after them, it just happens. It usually happens when there is a much better, much younger and much cheaper alternative in the farm system that I have admittedly grown attached to over the year. His name is Robert Refsnyder (not Robert Paulson….).
