Yankees Release 17 More Minor League Players

At first sight I thought this was a recap of the Yankees releasing those 16 minor league players a week or so back but New York has released another 17 minor leaguers just in time for Christmas. No huge names pop out at you but here is the list anyway:

Ryan Baker
Jeff Farnham
Sean Black
Saxon Butler
Shane Brown
Neil Medchill
Tim Flight
Victor Beriguete
Mariel Checo
John Brebbia
Rich Macheri
Charlie Haslup
Hector Crespo
Ty Afenir
Johnny Falla
Aaron Gates
Daniel Aldrich

Baker was the guy who got suspended for 50 games for refusing to take a drug test, just in case the name sounded familiar to some of you out there. I am a bit surprised by the Butler release as he was only drafted in the 2012 draft, talk about a short leash. Crespo is really surprising as he was drafted in 2013 and made it all the way to Scranton this season and now he is a free agent, head scratcher. Afenir was also drafted in this past June's draft but did not turn many heads in his debut season. The rest of the names I have either never heard of or are so far off the radar that they are not huge losses at all. I don't know what is going on in Yankee land down on the farm but someone is definitely cleaning house.

Five-Run First Sends Charleston Past Rome

Five-Run First Sends Charleston Past Rome
RiverDogs jump on Braves early for 7-3 win

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs rode a five run first inning to a 7-3 victory over the Rome Braves on Saturday in South Atlantic League action in front of 4,222 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the win, the RiverDogs advance to 35-33 in the second half and 74-62 overall. The Braves improve to 36-32 in second half play and 72-65 overall with the defeat.
Dante Bichette, Jr. got the scoring started with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, and Daniel Aldrich later drove in a couple with a double of his own. Two costly errors gave Charleston two more runs to cap off the inning and put the RiverDogs in the lead 5-0 after one inning.
In the second, the Dogs added another run on Ericson Leonora's RBI double to push the lead to 6-0.
It stayed that way until the seventh thanks to an amazing performance by starting pitcher Luis Niebla in his final outing of the season.
Niebla allowed just three hits and walked nobody in six shutout innings to earn the victory and improve to 5-6. Lefty Tyler Webb tossed two innings of relief and gave up three runs on three hits and fanned two. James Pazos closed it out for Charleston with a perfect ninth inning.
Rafael Briceno made the start for Rome and got rocked to the tune of seven hits, six runs, four earned, and three walks. He got tagged with the loss to fall to 5-9.
The first seven batters in the Charleston lineup collected at least one hit. Greg Bird also walked two more times to push his SAL league leading total to 105 on the season.

Rosario, Bichette Jr. Slug Charleston Past Greenville

Rosario, Bichette Jr. Slug Charleston Past Greenville
RiverDogs smash three homers, win third straight

GREENVILLE, SC - Jose Rosario blasted two homers and Dante Bichette, Jr. also went deep as the Charleston RiverDogs powered their way past the Greenville Drive 9-6 on Monday night in the series opener at Fluor Field at The West End. Charleston has now won three consecutive games.
With the win, the RiverDogs improve to 33-31 in the second half and 72-60 overall. The Drive fall to 26-35 in second half play and 48-81 overall with the loss.
In the top of the first inning, Jake Cave doubled and later scored on a passed ball to put Charleston up 1-0 early.
Greenville tied the game at 1-1 on three hits and a hit by pitch in the bottom of the first inning, but stranded the bases loaded to keep it tied.
In the bottom of the second the Drive got right back at it and added another run, this time on a hit, a wild pitch, and a couple errors to take a 2-1 lead. Once again Greenville stranded two men in scoring position though and couldn't add more damage.
Greg Bird doubled to begin the fourth inning for the Dogs and later scored on a double play ball to tie the contest at 2-2.
In the fifth is where the Charleston bats really came alive.
With two outs and runners at the corners, Jose Rosario worked a 10 pitch at-bat and cranked his second homer of the year over the left field wall. The three run blast gave the visiting team a 5-2 lead.
Greenville scored twice on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 5-4.
Dante Bichette, Jr. quickly extended the RiverDogs' lead back to three runs with a towering two-run, opposite field homer in the top of the sixth. The tenth of the year for Bichette, Jr. made it 7-4 Dogs.
Daniel Aldrich knocked in another run later in the frame for Charleston to make it 8-4 in the middle of the sixth.
The Drive cut it to 8-6 with a couple runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Rosario's second homer of the night, a solo shot, put Charleston up 9-6 for good.
Rosario finished the game 3-4 with two homers, four RBI, and two runs scored.
John Brebbia spun two scoreless innings to close it out for the RiverDogs and collect his first save of the season.
Starter Daniel Camarena came up one out shy of factoring in the decision after he tossed 4.2 innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts.
Righty Kelvin Castro threw 2.1 innings, struck out three, and allowed two runs on three hits. He earned the win to go to 1-0.
Justin Haley started for Greenville and earned the loss. He gave up five runs on six hits and fanned four. His record now stands at 7-10.
Reliever Gerardo Olivares also got roughed up by the RiverDogs to the tune of four runs, five hits, and two homers in two innings of work.
COMING UP: Game two of this three game series is Tuesday night at 7:05. Charleston will send out LHP Eric Wooten (1-1, 1.74 ERA) and Greenville will start with RHP Francisco Taveras (2-4, 6.61 ERA). Fans can listen to the game live locally on ESPN Radio 910AM or online at www.riverdogs.com.

Yankees Sign Daniel Aldrich

According to Mike Axisa on River Avenue Blues the Yankees have signed undrafted free agent Daniel Aldrich out of the College of Charleston. I will let you read Mike's scouting report, seen HERE, but he is definitely a very interesting sign. With those power numbers you can always find a spot in the minor leagues for him and hope for the best. Especially since we had 400K left over from our draft pool money which his $150 K contract, not confirmed... more assumed, will come out of. Thank you once again to Ty Hensley for signing that below slot deal!
