On this day in 2014 the New York Yankees learned that their ace starting pitcher CC Sabathia’s season would be over after undergoing knee surgery. CC had attempted previously to rest and rehab the knee but the degenerative knee condition was too far gone to be fixed without going under the knife.
The New York Yankees, without looking, have probably had the most players play for them than any other team in major league baseball. Not only has the team been around forever they also have never shied away from acquiring new players, even rentals, for a postseason run. The Yankees did just this on this day in 2008 when the recently released Richie Sexson signed with the Yankees. Sexson was the perfect platoon partner for Jason Giambi.
Also on this day in 1999 the Yankees showed once again that they could put on a show with Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium. When the Yankees put on a show they put one on right as David Cone became the 16th pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game beating the Montreal Expos 6-0. Before the game Don Larsen, the only player to throw a perfect game in the World Series, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Finally on this day in 1921 Babe Ruth became the all-time home run leader when he connected for his 139th home run in Detroit. Ruth's 36th home run of the season went over 500 feet and put him ahead of Roger Connor's previous mark. It took Connor 18 seasons in the National League to reach the plateau.

This Day In New York Yankees History 12/11: Willie Randolph
On this day in 1975 the Yankees went crazy trading for players with multiple deals that shaped the look of the franchise. The Yankees acquired second basemen Willie Randolph and pitchers Dock Ellis and Ken Brett from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Doc Medich. The Yankees also acquired outfielder Bobby Bonds for outfielder Mickey Rivers and pitcher Ed Figueroa from the California Angels.
Also on this day in 1959 the Kansas City Athletics traded outfielder Roger Maris and two other players to the Yankees for Hank Bauer, Don Larsen, Norm Siebern, and Marv Throneberry. The A's were banned from trading with the Yankees for 18 months because they were being accused of serving as a big league farm club for the Yankees. This was the first trade between the two teams since the year and a half suspension.
Finally on this day in 1951 the Yankees Joe DiMaggio announced his retirement at the Yankees Fifth Avenue suite. DiMaggio claims he "no longer has it" in his speech due to his age and his injuries and ends his career after 13 seasons. DiMaggio finishes with a .325 batting average and 361 home runs.

This Day In New York Yankees History 10/8: Don Larsen is Perfect
Also on this day in 1939 the Yankees completed their sweep over the Cincinnati Reds to win their fourth consecutive World Series championship thanks to “Lombardi’s Swoon.” Joe DiMaggio scored all the way from first in the top of the 10th inning when Charlie Keller almost knocked Reds catcher Ernie Lombardi unconscious in a home plate collision that allowed three runs to score in the Yankees 7-4 victory. Keller earned his nickname “King Kong” with that shot.
Finally on this day in 1927 the best team to ever play Major League Baseball completed their quest and won their World Series by sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates in four games. This was New York’s second World Series of the franchise’s history.
Also on this day in Yankees history the team had a couple exits from the postseason that were notable including the 1995 walk off victory by the Seattle Mariners in the ALDS and Joe Torre's final game in the 2007 ALDS against the Cleveland Indians, but that's none of my business.

This Day in New York Yankees History 12/1: Larsen and Turley Come to New York
It was this day in 1954 that we could thank the Baltimore Orioles for giving us two great starting pitchers in Don Larsen and Bob Turley. This was the largest trade in major league history where 17 players changed hands including Turley and Larsen coming to New York. This deal was so complex it was not completed until the day after the MLB Draft even though it began way back on November, 18.

This Day In New York Yankees History 10/8: Don Larsen is Perfect
There has only been one perfect game in the
history of Major League Baseball and that came on this day in 1956 and it came
from a man in a New York Yankees uniform. That man’s name was Don Larsen and
the feat came in Game 5 of the World Series as the Yankees beat the Los Angeles
Dodgers by the score of 2-0.
Also on this day in 1939 the Yankees completed
their sweep over the Cincinnati Reds to win their fourth consecutive World

ICYMI: Halladay Throws Second Postseason No-Hitter
It was on this day in 2010 that Philadelphia Phillies right handed ace Roy Halladay became only the second pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter in a postseason game, the first was the Yankees Don Larsen when he threw a perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Halladay blanked the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 4-0 in Game One of the 2010 NLDS.

Yankee Stadium Legacy: #34 Don Larsen
While Don Larsen's 1956 season was not one for the record books, although he did set a career best in wins with 11 and had a 3.26 ERA, his Game 5 start in the 1956 World Series was. On 10/8/56 against the Dodgers at Yankee Stadium the Indiana native became the first and only pitcher to ever throw a no hitter in the World Series.

Feeling nostalgic again as I found this Don Larsen biography about his perfect game in the World Series against the Dodgers. It even has interviews with Yogi Berra who caught the historic game. Enjoy.

This Day In New York Yankees History 10/8
On this day in 1927 the greatest team of all time, the 1927 New York Yankees, beat the Pirates 4-3 to complete the sweep and win the World Series.

On this day in 1956 Don Larsen became the first and to this date the only pitcher to every throw a perfect game in World Series history. The Yankees would beat the Dodgers 2-0 at Yankees Stadium in game five of this World Series.
On this day in 1961 Don Larsen threw five shutout innings against the Cincinnati Reds to extend his World Series scoreless streak to 32 innings. The previous record was held by Babe Ruth when he has 29 2/3 innings of consecutive scoreless baseball in the Fall Classic. The Yankees would win game four 6-0.
On this day in 1995 we saw the Seattle Mariners celebrating at home plate as they became only the fourth team to even come from behind after being down two games in a five game series. The Yankees would lose in Don Mattingly's final game 6-5 in 11 innings.

This Day In New York Yankees History 9/21
On this day in 1956 the Yankees made some history that they probably did not want to as they stranded 20 base runners in a 13-7 loss to the Boston Red Sox. 20 runners stranded established a new major league record. I think 1956 turned out pretty well for us, well the last time I asked Don Larsen anyway.
On this day in 2008 the Yankees celebrated the 85 year history of Yankees Stadium as the Yankees beat the Orioles 7-2 in the final game played in the House that Ruth Built. Julia Ruth Stevens, the daughter of Babe Ruth, threw out the ceremonial first pitch and after the game the Yankees players, led by none other than Derek Jeter, stood on the mound and wished Yankees Stadium goodbye. 54,610 fans attended the final game in the Cathedral of baseball.
