This Day In New York Yankees History 8/24: Yankees Hats Start a Gang War

Unknown to the New York Yankees their hats may have contributed to an uptick in gang violence in East Harlem, New York. On this day in 2007, a day after protests concerning the gang related items, New Era announced that it will remove the "offensive" hats that bears the colors and symbols of the rival gangs the Bloods, the Crips, and the Latin Kings. Two white hats had been wrapped in red and blue bandannas made by New Era and appeared to represent the Bloods and the Crips. A black Yankees hat with the interlocking NY also had a crown symbolic of the Latin Kings.

Also on this day in 1985 Don Baylor ties a major league record in a Yankees uniform when he is hit by a pitch for the 189th time in his career.

Finally on this day in 1951 Mickey Mantle was recalled from the minor leagues and for the first time in his career wore his #7 jersey. The Yankees would win the game and Mantle would go 1-4 in the 2-0 victory over the Indians. Mantle had previously wore #6 before being demoted six weeks ago and his jersey was given to infielder Bobby Brown.

When Will New York Run out of Jersey Numbers?

When the news broke that the New York Yankees would be retiring three more numbers this season, Andy Pettitte’s #46, Bernie Williams #51 and Jorge Posada’s #20, the jokes immediately started on Twitter and around the Yankees blog-o-sphere. When will the Yankees start using triple digits they would say or when would they start using letters or fractions others would say. Look, I get it, the retiring of the numbers thing has become a bit watered down over the years and honestly New York will eventually run out of numbers at this point.

Interestingly enough the USA Today did an article on when the Yankees would run out of numbers using some sort of mathematical equation and the results were a little surprising. New York already has the numbers of 16 players retired (remember that Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey shared the #8) and the numbers of two managers in Joe Torre and Casey Stengel already retired. That is before you consider the team’s unwillingness to hand out the #21 Paul O'Neill jersey and before Derek Jeter gets his day in Monument Park with his #2 jersey.

The Yankees, according to the USA Today article, established their franchise in 1903 so in 112 years the team would have retired 20 jersey numbers. Doing the math the team is retiring .178 numbers per year and would really start making things interesting in the year 2225. By 2442 the Yankees will be completely out of double digit numbers at the rate they are going according to the article. What, oh what, is the team going to do then?

Yankees to Retire #46 on August 23, 2015

The New York Yankees will present Andy Pettitte Day at Yankee Stadium on August 23, 2015. Conveniently Andy's son, Josh Pettitte, broke the news on his Twitter account claiming that the team would be giving Andy a plaque in Monument Park and will be retiring his #46 jersey number.

Alex Rodriguez and my #13 Fan Card

With the admission that broke yesterday from Alex Rodriguez that he used steroids and PED's once again from 2010-2012 I find myself seriously considering my fandom for #13. I want to be a fan of the guy because I like the guy but he makes it so hard to go to bat for him. I have preached forgiveness and such for all steroids users but none of those steroids users sued the league and the population of a small former republic of Russia. Nor did any of the other steroid users go on the Mike Francesa show claiming how innocent he was and such only to be outed later as a liar.

Don't get me wrong as long as he wears the uniform I will root for him and wish him the best because I wish the team nothing but the best. I'm not abandoning Alex because I don't abandon my Yankees but that doesn't mean I need to wear my #13 jersey in public or go to bat for him on the blog either. It's official, I'm turning in my A Rod fan card with much disappointment and regret in my heart.

Mariano Rivera's #42 Jersey Most Popular In Baseball

To nobody's surprise Mariano Rivera's #42 New York Yankees jersey is the most popular according to MLB.com's jersey sales this season. This is the top 20 list of most popular jerseys according to sale since the All Star break and has been compiled and released by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Player's Association.

Matt Harvey, Yasiel Puig, Manny Machado, and Buster Posey round out the top five of the list proving that youth is back in baseball. Add Clayton Kershaw, Yadier Molina, Andrew McCutchen, Yoenis Cespedes, and Mike Trout and you have nine of the top ten guys young and in or entering into their primes.

In case you were wondering if there were other New York Yankees players on the list Derek Jeter's #2 jersey comes in at #12 and Robinson Cano's #24 jersey is sitting at #19 on the list.
