Another Yankees Off Day…. Another Musical Recommendation

We spoke about this briefly the other day, well the last time the Yankees had an off day actually, but I want to touch on it a little more here today. The Chainsmokers finally released an album after countless singles and a couple of EP’s (that I know about) and I have to say I am pretty impressed with it. Is it going to win album of the year? Well I highly doubt that to be honest but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it my first two-or-three times through so I wanted to share some of it here for you today.

If you’re new here and you’re wondering why we are talking music on a Yankees-related blog it is because we usually go casual and talk about whatever on off days. It is part of what makes us, us. We will bring you the walk up music and entrance music for various players throughout the year on off days, we will bring you baseball related movies and book recommendations and pretty much anything we can think of to be different, unique and entertaining.

That’s why you come in the first place, isn’t it? Enjoy the off day and your Tuesday everybody.

Top 10 Baseball Movies of All-Time

The offseason is over and Spring Training is in full effect so that means that meaningful baseball is right around the corner. Since most of the spring training games are played at 1:05 pm in the afternoon while I am stuck at work I have really been going through a Yankees and baseball in general craving. That’s when I pull out some baseball movies to watch as I gear up for the grind that will be the 2016 season. People love lists and really love reading them on this blog, the view counter for each post has taught me that, so I will take the time to rank my Top 10 Baseball movies of all-time, in my opinion of course, here for you today. Agree, disagree, or if I left one off the list please let me know if the comments section below:

1. Pride of the Yankees

2. Bull Durham

3. Major League

4. The Sandlot

5. Field of Dreams

6. The Natural

7. Moneyball

8. Bad News Bears

9. Eight Men Out

10. League of Their Own (Women hate me now all around the world)

While We Wait: The Soul of the Game

You ever have that one movie that no matter how many times you see it that it doesn’t get old? You ever have that one movie that no matter what else is on if you see it on TBS or something you have to watch it. Even if it’s not the same edited or shortened down by cable TV? Soul of the Game is that movie for me (among others….. I mean Sandlot is a no-brainer…. come on) so I decided while we wait on the Yankees game to begin I would watch a movie. My “go-to” movie tonight is Soul of the Game so I figured I would share that with you as well while you wait.

If you haven’t seen it the movie covers the time period where Jackie Robinson was breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. The movie has Jackie in it and Branch Rickey but this movie focuses more on the Negro League struggle, Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. In the movie you see Jackie trying to earn the respect of Satchel, players being loaned and traded for series just to fill the house with fans, Gibson’s battle with a brain tumor and so much more.

It’s an “oldie but a goodie” so check it out. Enjoy the movie while we wait.

That 2:00 Feeling – Soul of the Game – Full Movie

You remember those commercials for the Five Hour Energy drinks that described you as having the “2:00 feeling?” Well today I am feeling like I need a five hour energy drink, 15 straight days of sleep or something much more potent, I definitely have that 2:00 feeling. When I have that feeling I like to either lay in the bed or sit down on the couch with the AC on full blast and watch a good movie while I fall asleep. I think I’ll do that today, don’t tell me boss.

You can watch the entire movie “Soul of the Game” right here on the blog for free just by clicking the Youtube video above. The basic premise of the movie is that Josh Gibson, Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige are fighting through the Negro Leagues trying to reach the Major Leagues when Branch Rickey finally comes calling.

It’s a good one, one of my own personal favorites. Enjoy.

Off Day Movie Recommendation

As you know we like to post full movies from Youtube on off days for that "2:00 feeling" and since baseball movies are getting harder and harder to find we will go in a different direction, and totally unrelated direction, with Enemy of the State. This is the movie with Will Smith, Gene Hackmand, Barry Pepper, etc. that really shows you how much the government can mess your life up in an instance. Enjoy the movie, enjoy the off day, and get back to work. You should be working, not watching this.

Pauly Shore's "In The Army Now" Off Day Full Movie

It's 2:00 and I've got that 2:00 feeling so it's time for an off day full length movie right here on The Greedy Pinstripes. Just click on the video above to watch the movie "In The Army Now' with Pauly Shore. Does it have anything to do with baseball? Nope, and it shouldn't matter. You should be working anyway, enjoy!

Quick Hit: Derek Jeter's Top 4 Favorite Movies

Derek Jeter, just in case you have been living under a rock so far this season, is going to retire at the end of the 2014 season and will likely have a lot of time on his hands. Jeter has said he has no interest in managing after he retires but has expressed an interest in owning a team, Derek is a boss so why not. Anyway, in an interview with ESPN's Andrew Marchand Jeter revealed his top four favorite movies of all time. Maybe he will get a movie theater from the Yankees on Derek Jeter Day.... Here's the list:

1. American History X - Great movie, quite possibly my favorite movie of all time too but I think Inception may be higher on my list. I have a huge man crush on Leonardo DiCaprio.

2. Major League - Who doesn't love Major League?

3. The Shawshank Redemption - Probably Top 5 on ANYONE'S list, especially mine.

4. The Five Heartbeats - Never heard of this one. It's a 1991 flick about the Temptations so I probably won't check it out but maybe you should.

5. Scarface(another Quaalude and she'll love me again), The Shining (never seen it), New Jack City (see the shining), and Friday (daaaaaaammmmn) were also honorable mentions on Jeter's list. It's always nice to get a little insight into the captain's mind because it's pretty rare.

New York Yankees Off Day Movie Recommendation

It's 2:00 pm ET and it's an off day so it's movie time on The Greedy Pinstripes. Today we bring you "Rawhide." Rawhide was made way back in 1938 and is set in the old wild west. Why it's significant to this site, besides the fact that Youtube is really pushing back on full movies on their site making them harder to find, is because Lou Gehrig is in the movie. Enjoy the off day Yankees family and enjoy the movie.

My Review of The Basbeall Movie "The Mendoza Line"

As a member of the Internet Baseball Writers Association of America, IBWAA, you get certain perks besides the recognition that you receive and one of them is getting free sneak previews of upcoming baseball movies and books. The Mendoza Line is one of those movies that I got to preview before everyone else recently and I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with the story, the camera work, and the movie overall. The movie was written by Nathan Kauffman and describes his movie plot below:

Coffee is big business in Chiapas, Mexico. It is also an area where baseball is even more popular than soccer. When coffee rust, a plant disease decimates the industry, five year old Ricardo Perez is taken across the Rio Grande in search of a better life with his family. Before Ricardo’s father abandons him and his mother, he instills a love of baseball in his son who manages to combine a little talent and a lot of hard work to secure a low round draft ticket to the minor leagues. He is now struggling through his third year in A-ball as a back-up catcher, barely hitting above The Mendoza Line (.200). His marriage to Christina is on the rocks. Her patience of spending the summers in a small hot valley town with no friends, caring for their two year old son, working two part-time jobs while supporting Ricardo’s progressively unrealistic dream is wearing thin. As undocumented immigrants, they are constantly looking over their shoulders.
Phil Pichette is Ricardo’s manager, disciplinarian, teacher, role model and father figure tasked with indoctrinating young players into the athletic and business realities of the game, while trying to advance his own career and keeping his own marriage on an even keel. Gino Montoya is the sage, veteran roving instructor; the philosopher king, baseball guru and cranky old man of the organization, always one step away from retirement but unwilling to finally cut the baseball cord and always mindful of the racial and cultural barriers he overcame on his way to major league success.
The Mendoza Line takes place in the span of a few days after the June draft when a handful of minor league baseball players will be released to make way for the newest prospects. There is no predictable melodramatic “big game” ending. Ricardo is faced with finality of his baseball dreams, face his limitations, put childish things behind and find a way of adjusting priorities and moving on with life.

First I want to say that this is not you're stereotypical baseball movie, and I like that, as the story has not been told like this before. It seems like there is definitely some truth to the story and it's a story that most of us do not hear about. Me personally, this story touched me a little because I am friends with former Yankee pitcher Alan Horne who never made it to the big leagues due to a shoulder injury. The finality of his baseball career and what he is doing after baseball really seemed like it had him depressed for a while, to the point even where he didn't even wanna talk baseball. The story is great and it really touched home. Definitely worth the 82 minutes to watch and I absolutely plan to watch this again.

You can rent the movie on vimeo if you are interested for $9.99 RIGHT HERE. It's worth the money in my opinion so check it out. Two thumbs up from The Greedy Pinstripes.

It's time for that 2:00 feeling again and it's time to watch a full baseball movie classic without leaving the site. Today we watch the 1996 television classic Soul of the Game. This movie covers baseball in the Negro Leagues and has Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, and Roy Campanella as the main characters. It really is a great and underrated baseball movie so enjoy it and enjoy the rest of your off day Yankees family.
