Most Popular Article of the Week: The Worrying about Robert Refsnyder Begins

I know what many of you are thinking, what in the wild, wild world of sports is Daniel Burch talking about? He’s seriously worried about Robert Refsnyder? Really? Hear me out people before you click off the site, un-bookmark us and never return to read any of my content again. If anyone is well aware of his week last week where he hit .400 it’s me. If anyone is well aware that he hasn’t had an error in over a week, an achievement for him, and two errors in his last 20 games it’s definitely me. I’ve been beating the drum for Refsnyder in the Bronx since last season and no one has beat it more than I have since his drafting from Arizona. I’m worried Yankees fans and one little quote in an interview put this overwhelming worry in my heart. “I was trying to hit my way out here (Scranton Wilkes-Barre)” and that he, to paraphrase, is no longer trying to be perfect. Keep reading.

When a prospect is ready and is essentially wasting away in the minor leagues no one knows it more than he does. We have seen it far too many times, a prospect is ready but is blocked by an aging veteran or another player and continues his minor league career until his development takes a tumble in the wrong direction. We saw it with Jesus Montero, and he never recovered, and we saw it with Austin Romine, who may never recover, and my worry is that we may start to see the effects of it soon with Refsnyder. When a player gets bored or when a player knows he has done all he can to warrant and earn a shot and when he still doesn’t he gets discouraged. It’s human nature. When you get discouraged you get bored and when you get bored you get unmotivated. When you’re unmotivated, well I don’t have to show you how deep the rabbit hole gets.

I’m not saying that if the team doesn’t call up Refsnyder like yesterday then he will be a bust of a prospect but I am saying if something doesn’t happen soon, especially with Drew petitioning to move to Mendoza Line down and rename it to the Drew Line, then the team may have a problem on their hands now and for the future. Refsnyder seems like a great player with a good background and upbringing that left him with a good head on his shoulders but even the most patient person can only wait for so long before human nature kicks in and based off his comments after winning Offensive Player of the Week and after disappointment after disappointment this winter Refsnyder may be closer to that invisible line then we think.

Whitley is Down, What Now?

Chase Whitley has been pitching through some elbow pain for “a while” now and finally left the game against the Rays on Thursday night in the second inning of the contest. The news is bad on Whitley and he will not be relied on for quite some time in the Yankees rotation after the injury begging the question what will the Yankees do now? The good news for the Yankees is if an injury is going to occur, which you hope it never does, it couldn’t have happened at a better time during the season. The cavalry is coming and once again the Yankees may be able to survive this with the depth and insurance that Brian Cashman has stockpiled this offseason.

Chris Capuano is fully stretched out and has made a start in Triple-A Scranton with the RailRiders meaning he could be activated and take Whitley’s spot while he is placed on the 15 day DL. Masahiro Tanaka is back and has thrown multiple bullpen sessions since being shut down with his forearm strain and wrist tendinitis and may only be a week or two away at most while the Yankees still have the likes of Bryan Mitchell sitting down in the minor leagues waiting for the call. Capuano has been confirmed as the starter on Sunday already in place of Whitley giving everyone else in the rotation an extra day of rest.

It’s unfortunate that the Yankees lost another starting and one with so much promise in Whitley but as cold as it sounds the show must go on, especially in New York. With Tanaka close, Capuano ready and Mitchell waiting in the wings the Yankees may not have the starting pitching depth they had this time last week but they have enough to get them by and keep them in first place and that may have to be enough.

Weekly Check In: Tyler Austin

Tyler Austin is currently in a holding pattern down in Scranton as he has done enough to warrant a call up on most teams, not New York of course, but does not have an obvious spot on the roster. If I were making the decisions I think I would have to let Garrett Jones off the hook and let him go elsewhere while calling up Austin. The Georgia boy has played third base, first base and the outfield in his professional career with the Yankees and could not be any worse defensively then Jones has been. Honestly he could probably be better at first base especially and that’s not even his natural position, Jones is that bad right now with the glove.

While it may hurt his development to bring him up and sit him on the bench rather than letting him play every day with the RailRiders I would much rather see these stats in the Bronx then in some town in Pennsylvania.

Weekly Check In: Robert Refsnyder

Now that we’re getting into a normal routine of these weekly check in’s now we can get back to checking on our favorite Yankees prospects. With Didi Gregorius struggling in the Bronx and Robert Refsnyder knocking on the door let’s see how long the Yankees can stand to keep their second baseman down in Scranton with the RailRiders.

Here’s what Refsnyder’s been up to so far this season:

PNC Field Will Host Yankees Old Timer's Game

The New York Yankees host Old Timer's Day every single season that concludes with a game between former Yankees legends on the field at Yankee Stadium. The 2015 version will be a little different as the Old Timers Game will be coming to PNC Field, the newly renovated home of the Yankees Triple-A team the Scranton Wilkes Barre RailRiders. The game will be held on Sunday, June 21 in front of what will likely be a sold out ballpark. The Yankees will still hold their normal and annual game inside Yankee Stadium on Saturday, June 20 so don't fret if you can't make the trip down to Scranton this summer.

The ballpark in Scranton will also host a meet and greet with autograph signings which will help raise money for Parkinson's disease research making the trip worth it with that alone. Grant Cagle, the Railriders co-managing partner, had the disease hit close to home recently when his friend, and former Yankees World Series MVP, Brian Doyle was diagnosed with the disease last year. Cagle is expecting between 18 and 25 former Yankees players and legends to make the trip for the game inside PNC Field this season with the Yankees offering to bus players from the Bronx to PNC Field if they wanted to participate in both games during the weekend.

Meet a Prospect: Jose Pirela

Jose Manuel Pirela was born on November 21, 1989 in Valera, Trujillo, Venezuela. Pirela is a right handed infielder in the New York Yankees organization. Pirela has also played for the Aguilas del Zulia of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League while under contract with New York, with permission from the team of course.

Pirela signed with the New York Yankees as an International free agent in 2007 after signing for a $300,000 signing bonus. Pirela was immediately sent to the Dominican Summer League Yankees 1 team. Pirela stumbled around the Yankees minor league system until he reached Triple-A with the Scranton Wilkes Barre RailRiders for the first time in 2013 where he stayed until yesterday afternoon. Pirela spent the entire 2014 season with the RailRiders where he hit .305/.351/.441 with ten home runs.

Pirela signed a contract with the Yankees last season before becoming a minor league free agent and now has all six years of team control in front of him. With his ability to play all over the field he seems like almost a shoe-in for the Yankees bench heading into 2015.

Pirela will spend the rest of September in the Bronx with the Yankees before he becomes a minor league free agent after this season. I have been beating the drum to get Pirela on the team for quite some time now so this made me smile, although the loss of Prado really hurts.  Good luck Jose!

Yankees Outright Zoilo Almonte To Triple-A

Zoilo Almonte has cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and has been outrighted to Triple-A with the Scranton RailRiders. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe Zoilo can deny his assignment and cannot elect free agency so he is with the Yankees at least until the end of the season. This is better than losing the switch hitter for nothing (yes I realize and agree that Antoan Richardson is nothing).

The Drum Beating For Robert Refsnyder Continues

Pardon me while I continue to beat the drum for Robert Refsnyder to be called up to the Bronx. I know you guys are probably getting tired of me ranting and raving about the same thing here but I will continue to beat the drum until Brian Cashman smartens up or gets let go at the end of the season.

The Yankees have a black hole offensively at second base in Stephen Drew and the biggest knock on Refsnyder is his defense at second. The Yankees will soon again have a black hole in right field after Carlos Beltran’s elbow started barking again when the team has Ichiro Suzuki back in right field every day likely for the rest of the season. Refsnyder was an outfielder in college and has played some outfield in Triple-A this season.

Refsnyder continues to get two or three hits a game down in Scranton and has improved his defense exponentially over the past couple of months. I say again, what in the hell are we waiting for here? Do we need an invitation? Please admit one Robert Refsnyder, nonrefundable. No excuses, do your jobs.

Yankees Call Up Zelous Wheeler, Demote Chase Whitley

The New York Yankees have called up Zelous Wheeler for an extra player on the bench and have sent Chase Whitley down to Triple-A. The Yankees have been going with a short bench in recent weeks and Whitley has been struggling coming out of the bullpen so the move makes some sense. Considering that Beltran’s elbow is barking again it also makes sense to have a guy that can play both in the infield and the outfield like Wheeler can.

I am somewhat surprised that the Yankees didn’t call up the other “Z man” Zoilo Almonte to help replace Beltran but Wheeler is more versatile and flexible than Almonte is.

So Much Talent Being Wasted In Scranton

The Yankees offense continues to struggle while there is so much talent just being wasted in Triple-A right now. The Scranton Wilkes Barre RailRiders offense may be better than the big league club's offense right now. I continue to beat the drum and I continue to ask the question, why are these guys still sitting in the minor leagues while guys like Ichiro Suzuki and Stephen Drew continue to make outs in the Bronx?

Manny Banuelos Promoted To Triple-A

The New York Yankees are in desperate need of starting pitching, even with the return of Michael Pineda tonight, and they may have a pitcher on the horizon that could help. Manny Banuelos is back for his first season since Tommy John surgery and has been promoted to Triple-A Scranton to pitch with the RailRiders. The 23 year old southpaw has had an up and down season in 2014 but may be ready to finally compete in the Bronx.

Banuelos has a 4.23 ERA this season starting with the Double-A Trenton Thunder and the High A Tampa Yankees and has a 1-3 record. Banuelos has been on a "Joba Rules" esque pitching plan and has seen his innings limit watched closely this season. Manny has gotten better with every start this season and has only allowed more than one run just once in his last four starts. The time may be now for Banuelos.

The Triple-A season has about three weeks left not counting the postseason so Banuelos may be an option for the Yankees when the rosters expand in September. Banuelos would likely be the second of the "Killer B's" in the Yankees bullpen joining Dellin Betances. Stay tuned, the Yankees are finally being aggressive with their prospects and it is definitely a sight for sore eyes.

Quick Hit: Pineda Likely Wednesday's Starter

The Yankees have a tough decision on their hands for this Wednesday for the game against the Baltimore Orioles and frankly it's a good problem to have. The Yankees may have too many options for Wednesday's start after Esmil Rogers was fantastic in a spot start Friday night against the Cleveland Indians. Now Girardi and company have to decide if rehabbing right hander Michael Pineda is ready for the Major Leagues and ready to take the injured David Phelps spot in the rotation or if he needs one more rehab start. If the Yankees decide that it's the latter then Rogers will likely get a second spot start in a big game that the Yankees absolutely need to win.

Rogers went five innings on Friday and only allowed one run to the Indians while keeping the ball down and in the ballpark. Pineda has been typical Pineda in the minor leagues and can go an estimated 90 pitches on Wednesday.

My personal opinion is you can always have Rogers piggyback Pineda. Pineda's 90 pitches are much more valuable to the team in Baltimore then they are in Scranton. Just my two cents, whats yours?

Yankees Re-Sign Scott Sizemore, Daley Sent To AAA

The New York Yankees have brought Scott Sizemore back on another minor league deal after releasing him last week. Many around the league thought that Sizemore would return to the Oakland Athletics who were interested in him before his release but ultimately Sizemore returned to the Yankees.

Matt Daley was passed through waivers after being designated for assignment once again and was sent to Triple-A Scranton with the RailRiders. Daley should be back before the season is over for another run in the bullpen.

Dean Anna Claimed By Pittsburgh

From the man himself the New York Yankees shortstop Dean Anna will be heading to Pittsburgh to become a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Yankees designated Anna for assignment after calling up Zelous Wheeler after struggling at the major league level and in Triple-A this season. I knew he wouldn't clear waivers and I knew we would lose him for nothing, and we did. Not a major loss but I hate to lose depth to keep an overpaid veteran that is not performing in a job.

Yankees Sign Edgmer Escalona, Lose Robert Coello

The New York Yankees have signed former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Edgmer Escalona to a minor league deal today. Robert Coello opted out of his minor league deal so basically Escalona will take his roster spot for the Scranton Wilkes Barre RailRiders.

Escalona is 27 years old and rejected a minor league assignment after being designated for assignment by Baltimore a couple weeks back. Escalona was a relief pitcher until around two months ago when the Orioles moved him into the starting rotation. Escalona responded by posting a 6.10 ERA in 20.2 innings before getting the ax.

Jim Miller Called Up, Jose Ramirez Sent Down

The New York Yankees have called up relief pitcher Jim Miller from Scranton and will send down Jose Ramirez to make room for Miller in the Yankees pen. Ramirez had struggled this season for the Yankees and threw a ton of pitches yesterday and the Yankees needed a fresh arm for tonight after losing in extra innings last night. CC Sabathia was transferred to the 60 day DL to make room for Miller on the 40 man roster. Sabathia's 60 day DL trip is obviously retroactive and will be long up before he is eligible to come back to the big league club.

Miller has actually pitched well this season to the tune of a 2.85 ERA in 41 innings for Scranton and the call up is well deserved, even if he is 32 years old.

Pirela Named Player of Month, Lindgren Joins Charleston

Jose Pirela has been named the International Leagues Player of the Month for the month of June. Pirela is a member of the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and has been leading off for the team and playing left and right field almost exclusively these days after coming through the system as a second baseman. Pirela had 40 hits in the month of June and had a .336/.385/.504 triple slash with 10 extra base hits, five stolen bases, 18 RBI's and 21 runs scored. Pirela is making it tougher and tougher to continue to run Alfonso Soriano, Brian Roberts, and Kelly Johnson out there with numbers like these.

The New York Yankees have also announced that left-handed pitcher Jacob Lindgren will join the Charleston RiverDogs. Lindgren, New York’s first selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, comes to Charleston from the Gulf Coast League Yankees 1. Lindgren was the 55th overall pick in the Draft, taken by the Yankees in the second round out of Mississippi State. In 2013, Lindgren was a sophomore starter for the Bulldogs, which were the College World Series runner-up to UCLA.

During his junior season in 2014, he moved to the bullpen and posted stellar figures with a 6-1 record, a 0.81 ERA, three saves, and 100 strikeouts compared to 25 walks. Lindgren pitched a scoreless inning of relief on June 28 in a win over the GCL Yankees 2 in his professional debut.

Quick Hit: Catching Up w/ The Farm

I am a little behind on my Yankees prospects and Baby Bomber updates so let's get caught up, shall we?

Slade Heathcott will miss the remainder of the 2014 season with a knee injury, that same knee injury that cost him much of the 2013 season. The injury will require surgery, terrible luck for Slade and the Yankees.

Heath Bell has been released after just five games for Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre. He was brought in to use and abuse for a couple weeks and that is exactly what the Yankees did.

Nik Turley is being activated off the DL finally after missing all of spring training and this season to date and will be assigned to the RailRiders. As you remember Turley was released and re-signed, basically a procedural move to get him off the 40 man roster and through waivers.

Dean Anna and Diego Moreno came off the Triple-A disabled list and really created a logjam for the RailRiders, especially in the infield. Scranton now has Kyle Roller, Anna, Zelous Wheeler, Rob Refsnyder, and Scott Sizemore vying for spots. That's not including second basemen turned outfielder Jose Pirela already moved to the outfield.
