If Brian Cashman Isn’t Already Calling the Texas Rangers He Should Be

If Brian Cashman hasn’t already made the phone call to the Texas Rangers about a potential trade then maybe he should be because his job is likely depending on it. The Rangers recently announced that ace starting pitcher Yu Darvish, third baseman Adrian Beltre, shortstop Elvis Andrus, and Shin-Soo Choo all cleared waivers and can be traded to any team for the rest of the season. Also by the end of the week Neal Cotts is likely to have cleared as well which begs the question, does Brian Cashman have one more blockbuster in him that may potentially save his job?

The biggest obstacle in any potential trade is that the Rangers think they can and plan to contend in 2015 with ¾ of the team back healthy next season. The Rangers are unlikely to want to unload any of the aforementioned players except for maybe Cotts. Cotts would be a nice rental for New York but would not be enough to push the team over the edge. Beltre would be a nice addition and is definitely a bat you make room for but would not be as high on the priority list in my book as a Choo or an Andrus would be. Choo would bring a ton of on base percentage to the team and give Joe Girardi three options to play center field at any given day. The Yankees may have the best outfield defense in all of baseball with the addition of Choo. Andrus could easily be the shortstop of the future replacing Derek Jeter next season and replacing Stephen Drew at second base for this season.

It is probably a pipe dream for any of these players to come to New York but the rotation would be scary good again with a healthy Michael Pineda, Masahiro Tanaka, and Yu Darvish to join Hiroki Kuroda, Brandon McCarthy, and Shane Greene. The infield defense would shine with the addition of Andrus and the offense may finally get the jolt it needs with any of Choo or Beltre. It’s unlikely but Cashman better be on the phones now because once again, his job more than likely depends on it.

Texas May Have Just Become A Tanaka Suitor

The Texas Rangers may be aggressively entering the sweepstakes that is Masahiro Tanaka after Derek Holland wen't down for at least half of the 2014 season. Holland fell at home, according to a Rangers press release, and injured his left knee and had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage. The Rangers are obviously a win now team, especially after trading for Prince Fielder and signing Shin Soo Choo to a big time contract so does that make Tanaka the eventual replacement for Holland?

The Rangers have literally nine or ten guys that could easily fill out the starting rotation including Japanese superstar Yu Darvish so I find it highly unlikely  that they get into the discussion for Tanaka, but they could. If the Rangers did sign someone I could see them jumping on a Matt Garza, the devil you know vs. the devil you don't, but I can't count the Rangers out until Tanaka is standing at Yankee Stadium being introduced as a Yankee.

Color me worried.

Yankees Tried To Land Shin Soo Choo

The New York Yankees tried to land Shin Soo Choo after they signed Jacoby Ellsbury with an attractive seven year deal worth $140 million. Choo declined the deal obviously and the Yankees moved on to Carlos Beltran but how nice would it have been to have that OBP at the top or bottom of the lineup?

I know I am probably in the minority here but if we could still acquire Choo and move Gardner for a piece that we actually need or can use I think it makes too much sense not to. Again, I don't want to move Gardner I just said that it would make sense. Even if it took "Ellsbury" money.

Here is a quote from Yahoo's Jeff Passan:

In the aftermath of Robinson Cano’s defection to Seattle, New York presented Choo a seven-year, $140 million deal, three sources outside the Yankees’ organization told Yahoo Sports. When Boras countered asking for more money – one source indicated he wanted “Ellsbury money,” or $153 million over seven years – the Yankees pulled the offer and signed Carlos Beltran to a three-year, $45 million deal.

Shin Soo Choo Actually Makes A Lot Of Sense For NY

Hear me out. Brian Kenny tweeted that he knew how to fix the Yankees and his first rule was signing Shin Soo Choo and I scoffed but now that I think about it, it does make sense. It makes sense on this team anyway as he would not be the most expensive platoon player in the history of baseball. On this team with the plethora of outfielders and the constant outfield rotation we could easily see Choo miss every lefty this season. Choo hits right handed hitters well and could be in against them and sitting on the bench in favor or Alfonso Soriano or even Ichiro Suzuki when facing left handed hitters,

Obviously this would all be contingent on the Yankees trading Brett Gardner to clear a spot for him but the move would make sense. The market is seemingly pretty quiet for Choo right now which could play into our hands perfectly. Also an outfield of Choo in left field, Ellsbury in center, and Beltran in right field would be one of the best in the league. Also a lineup of Ellsbury, Choo, Beltran, Soriano, McCann, Teixeira is a nightmare for opposing pitching.

So Mr. Brian Kenny I apologize and I bow down to you, to your idea for acquiring Mr. OBP Choo, and thank you for showing me the light.

Brian Kenny Thinks He Can Fix The Yankees

So we have Brett Gardner, Shin Soo Choo, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran, Alfonso Soriano, Vernon Wells, & Ichiro Suzuki? Holy hell what a logjam.

Agreed. Reminds me of Billy Martin and Billy Ball. Well I was born in 1985 so what I have seen on tape and heard anyway, it doesn't actually remind me of anything. Speed does kill and I love having that option in the lineup and in the outfield.

In my series of posts I described in September imagining if Robinson Cano left for greener pastures I said to let Kelly Johnson have the second base job. He can give you 20 home runs, 80 RBI's, hit around .270, and is the closest we have or will get to "replacing" Cano. Long story short, agreed.
Figured Kenny would be more willing to give the young guys a shot but then I forgot he was strictly a numbers guy. One or two I wouldn't be upset with but signing three guys seems like an awful lot for us and takes away innings from guys like Cesar Cabral, Dellin Betances, Preston Claiborne, etc. Girardi has made a living off of revamping our bullpen on a year to year basis with our farm system. If it's not broke...

Yeah I got nothing...

Reds already said they are not interested in Gardner and he is about the only trade chip we have that they want to win now. It would be nice but right now it does not seem realistic.

Finally someone else who doesn't want the Yankees to trade for Brandon Phillips. Thank you!
Surprisingly I think 90% of us are all in unison about this. No more 10 year deals to guys in their 30's, bottom line.

What does it matter if it is front loaded or back loaded? Using AAV it doesn't matter and all we care about is the luxury tax.

Isn't there some kind of sabermetric stat that could you tell you how much effectiveness he would lose if he were to come back to the AL East and Yankee Stadium? I have his BIP locations ready if you would like to discuss it Mr. Kenny.

You skipped Rule 10. Is this one of those things where you buy four pigs and paint them each with a number "1", "2", "3", and "5" and laugh while everyone searches for #4? Did I mention his BIP locations from Great American Ballpark to Yankee Stadium?

Votto is not going anywhere and Bailey is not realistic. Bronson's BIP's... I still have them when you are ready Mr. Kenny.

Volunteering to be a human binder?

For a guy who crunches numbers a lot you sure are skipping a lot of numbers here. Plus Coupon Clipping Hal has priced the Yankees fans out of the new stadium.
Agreed!

The Yankees Are Interested In Shin Soo Choo

The worst thing the New York Yankees may have done is release a statement stating that they would be able to shell out in excess of $300,000,000 in contracts this season while still getting under the $189 million luxury tax threshold. I say that could be the worst thing because now every single free agent in the top 100 will seemingly be linked to the Yankees making more work for me, and driving up the price on all those players. It seems like the Yankees could have five Giancarlo Stanton's in the outfield and we would still be linked to Jacoby Ellsbury and Shin Soo Choo.

Speaking of Choo we are reportedly interested in the switch hitting outfielder, and no we do not have five Giancarlo Stanton's in the outfield (yet), who is a free agent of the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds will undoubtedly offer Choo a qualifying offer worth $14,100,000 that he will also undoubtedly decline making Choo not only expensive dollar wise but would also cost the Yankees their 18th overall pick in the draft.

The Yankees like Choo's ability to get on base, the fact that he is a switch hitter, and they like his power especially with his left handed swing in Yankees Stadium. Choo hits righties quite well but his hitting against left handed pitchers leaves much to be desired. Choo led off for the Reds and put up a  .285/.423/.462/.885 slash line in 2013. Choo also hit 21 home runs and knocked in 54 RBI's while stealing 20 bases.

The Yankees will have competition from the Reds, Mets, Rangers, Cubs, Astros, Phillies, and Mariners for Choo's services and the bidding is expected to get expensive, count me out. I think Choo ends up in New York ultimately but with our little brother, or sister in recent years, the New York Mets on a six year deal worth around $90,000,000.

Should the Yankees Trade For Shin-Soo Choo?

As we all know the Yankees have some decisions to make not only this off season but next off season as well if they plan to get under the 2014 $189 million luxury tax thresh hold. Nick Swisher will be a free agent after the 2012 season and with him already hinting, whether directly or indirectly, at wanting Jayson Werth money he may already be out of the Yankees plans this off season. The Indians came out and said that they would be willing to listen to offers for Shin-Soo Choo this off season while he will be in the last season of his contract and entering his age 30 season.

Shin-Soo Choo is currently 30 years old and will not turn 31years of age until the middle of July 2013 so he is in the middle of his prime. Choo is considered to be a strong defensive player with an absolute cannon for an arm with a good average, on base percentage, and OPS. Choo has a career 19.0 WAR and 13.9 of that have come in the last four seasons. He also has a career .290 batting average including his rookie season in Seattle where he only batted .056 in 21 plate appearances. Choo has been good for around 15-20 home runs a season with 15-20 stolen bases and over .100 points higher with his OBP then his batting average, which is considered to be well above average.

Choo also would only be on a one year deal since 2013 would be the final year of his contract that will pay him slightly higher then the $4.9 million he made this season in his final year of arbitration. His AAV, even if he were to re sign with the Yankees, would have to be lower then Swisher's AAV if he came anywhere near Jayson Werth money. Also the new Collective Bargaining Agreement for MLB states that you can offer a player a qualifying offer, which he would be expected to decline for a multi year deal, and if ti is declined you can get draft pick compensation. I mean Scott Boras is his agent so I do not see any chance of him accepting that qualifying one year offer.

The problem would be that if we did trade for Choo we would have a 2014 free agency class that would include Shin-Soo Choo, Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter(if he declines his player option), Rafael Soriano (if he does not opt out sooner), and whoever else comes out way between then and now. Joe Girardi will also no longer be under contract but I do not see a situation less then a Bobby V season where he does not come back. The 2014 free agency class highlights Jason Kubel, Martin Prado, Nelson Cruz, Carlos Beltran, Hunter Pence,  Chris Young, Jacoby Ellsbury, and others seen HERE.

Whether the Yankees even have the interest or the pieces after the disappointment in the minor leagues this season is the real question here but I plan on monitoring this closely. This news just took some of the leverage away from Nick Swisher when it comes to the Yankees though and part of me says that Nick will give the Yankees a "home town discount" and sign a three or four year deal worth 12-15 million per. Either way, the shorter deal for Swisher or trading for Choo without emptying the farm, I am down because both put the Yankees in a great position to win.
