TGP Trivia and Fact of the Day for April 11th, 2019

Good morning Yankees family!

On April 11, 1912, the Yankees debuted their now famous pinstripes in what was their final home opener at Hilltop Park. It took until 1915 for the pinstripes to become a permanent part of their home uniforms, though.

And it took a little longer than I would have liked, but I am forever grateful that you, my Kari Ann, are my wife. My only regret is not finding you sooner so that I could spend even more years being yours. I love you.

Quick Hit: Under Armour to Make MLB Jerseys Starting in 2019

For what seems like forever Majestic has made jerseys for Major League Baseball, well it hasn’t been forever but they have been making batting practice jerseys for the sport since 1982 and has made all their jerseys exclusively since 2005 but still, but that is all set to change in 2019. In 2019, a year earlier than expected, under Armour will begin making the batting practice and game uniforms according to the league.

Under Armour will also make dugout clothing for the 2018 postseason before fully taking over the on-field apparel in 2019. Fanatics Inc., who owns Under Armour, purchased the business, the plant in Easton, Pennsylvania and the 600 employees from Majestic back in December.

Not really big news here but it’s kind of a lazy and hot Saturday anyway so I thought why not share.

This Day in New York Yankees History 5/13: The Rays are Finally Good!

On this day in 2008 the Boston Red Sox lost and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Yankees 2-1 in 11 innings to put the Rays in sole possession of first place for the first time in their franchise's history. Tampa would be seven games over the .500 mark (23-16) which is also a mark that had never been accomplished in the 11 years of the Rays existence.

Also on this day in 1985 the New York Yankees rally to beat the Minnesota Twins 9-8 after trailing the Twins 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Don Mattingly hit a ninth inning three run walk off home run at Yankee Stadium with two outs to cap the victory.

Also on this day in 1955 for the first time in his career Mickey Mantle hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game. Mantle finished the game with three home runs total, two from the left side, and drove in all five runs in a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Finally on this day in 1929 a game was played for the first time in major league history where both teams wore numbers on the back of their uniforms. The Indians hosted the New York Yankees in League Park in Cleveland and would mark numerals becoming a permanent fixture on the back of the uniforms.

Few Yankees Change Their Jersey Numbers

A few members of the New York Yankees changed their uniform numbers entering this season so I figured I would catch you up on that. Also we will cover the new faces in the Bronx and showcase what number they will be wearing in 2015 in the Bronx.

First holdovers Austin Romine and Jose Pirela changed their numbers entering spring training. Romine changed his number to #55 while Pirela changed his number to #63.

New faces in New York were Nathan Eovaldi who will wear #30, David Carpenter is wearing #29, Chris Martin is wearing #61, Justin Wilson is wearing #41, Andrew Miller is wearing #48, Chasen Shreve is wearing #64, Didi Gregorius is wearing #18 and Garrett Jones is wearing #33.

Surprisingly Masahiro Tanaka did not take Hiroki Kuroda's old number as expected. Not yet anyway.

Yankees To Wear Derek Jeter Patch Starting Sunday

The New York Yankees are set to begin wearing a Derek Jeter commemorative patch on their jerseys starting this Sunday, Derek Jeter Day. This is kind of cool but it has been overshadowed by the sound bites of Joe Girardi saying to "stop picking on" Derek Jeter and showing an unwillingness to move him in the lineup.

Quick Hit: Today Should Be Reggie Jackson Day

On this day in 2004 the Oakland Athletics retired the #9 jersey of Reggie Jackson. Jackson was honored for his nine Hall of Fame season with the A's and was a part of three consecutive World Series titles from 1972-1974. Jackson also had his #44 retired by the Yankees in 1993 becoming only the eight player to have his number retired by at least two teams in Major League history. That's quite the accomplishment, hate the guy or not.

This Day In New York Yankees History 4/22

On this day in 1903 the New York Highlanders, later to be named the New York Yankees, play in their first game of the franchises history. The Highlanders and Jack Chesbro would take the loss 3-1 to the Washington Senators. Chesbro finished the season 21-15 with a  2.77 ERA so he didn't let the loss linger too much.

On this day in 1915 the New York Yankees uniforms will feature pinstripes. The Yankees abandoned the pinstripes in 1913 and 1914 before coming back to the fashion statement full time in 1915.

On this day in 1959 Whitey Ford tied the Yankees franchise record for strikeouts in a game with 15, although Whitey had the luxury of extra innings. Ford matched Bob Shawkey's 15 K's in 1919 in a 1-0 victory in 14 innings over the Washington Senators.

On this day in 2010 the Yankees turned their first triple play in 42 seasons when Alex Rodriguez stepped on third base to start a 5-4-3 around the horn triple play against the Oakland Athletics. CC Sabathia was on the mound in the 4-2 loss at Oakland.

Look What The Scranton RailRiders Will Wear Tonight

Take a look at what the Yankees AAA affiliate the Scranton Wilkes Barre RailRiders will be wearing tonight as a part of "Outdoors Night." Camouflage uniforms with hunter orange sleeves will have them sticking out and oddly blending in at the same time. Mountain Man from the A&E show Duck Dynasty will be there, hence the name on the back of the jersey in the tweet above. You really have to love minor league baseball, don't you?

Derek Jeter Third In League In Jersey Sales

Above is the list of the top selling jerseys from the offseason and surprisingly David Ortiz is first from the Boston Red Sox, not the retiring Yankees Captain Derek Jeter. Dustin Pedroia came in at the second spot followed by Derek Jeter in third place. The only other Yankees in the Top 20 was Jacoby Ellsbury who was 20th. Just in case you were wondering and still bitter Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners is in 9th place.

2014 Spring Training Uniforms Released

The new 2014 Spring Training uniforms have been released league wide and here is the first sneak peek for the New York Yankees. Not a huge change from last years uniforms but it is Spring Training so it doesn't really matter all that much. The Yankees are one of five teams, the Red Sox, Reds, Twins, and Padres, to have a different home and road uniform, seen above. The Yankees do not put names on the backs of their uniforms but nine other teams will not put their names on the back of the Spring Training uniforms including the  Blue Jays, Rangers, Twins, Athletics, Angels, Rockies, Cubs, White Sox, and Orioles.

Here are the rest of the uniforms:

2013 All Star Game Uniforms Released

Major League Baseball has released the American League and National League uniforms for this years 84th annual Major League Baseball All Star game and they are hideous. I am not pulling any punches but I am being honest too and they are hideous. Anyway here they are love them or hate them.
