Prospects Month ICYMI: Yankees 2015 Minor League Suspensions Recap

Baseball America is awesome, we all know that. They bring us the best of the best when it comes to all things Yankees prospects and prospects in general. Unfortunately they cover it all though and that included the Yankees minor league suspensions from this season. Yankees RHP Wilking Rodriguez

Rodriguez, now 25, was signed to a minor league deal by the Yankees this winter. He was originally signed as an international free agent by Devil Rays on Feb. 26, 2007 and rose as high as No. 17 in Tampa Bay’s organization. At his best, Rodriguez has a 90-95 mph fastball with natural tailing action that makes it difficult for opponents to barrel. Following seven years in the Rays’ organization, Rodriguez spent 2014 in the Royals’ organization, reaching the majors for two games, before signing with the Yankees. He had not pitched yet this season after spending time in big league camp.

3/19/15

Yankees RHP Moises Cedeno
Suspension Length: 72 games
Violating Substances: Clenbuterol
Cedeno, signed by the Yankees in 2011 out of Panama for $354,800, has spent the past three seasons in the DSL with varying degrees of success. Last season, he was 4-4, 3.23 and averaged more than a strikeout per inning. When he signed he was touted for his fastball (93 mph) and what scouts termed an advanced changeup. He won’t turn 20 until Aug. 29.

3/11/15

Yankees RHP Brayan Alcantara
Suspension Length: 72 games
Violating Substances: metabolites of Stanozolol
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Alcantara, now 21, has pitched in the Dominican Summer League the past three seasons with varying degrees of success. In 2014, he was 1-4, 4.21, but had a career-low 3.16 BB/9.

1/28/15

Yankees SS Tyler Palmer
Suspension Length: 50 games
Violating Substances: amphetamines and drug of abuse (second positive test)
Palmer, 22, was drafted by the Marlins in the fourth round in 2011 but was hampered by a hand injury that required three surgeries. He finished his amateur career in 2014 at Thomas (Ga.) and was the top prospect in the NAIA before he was signed by the Yankees as a nondrafted free agent in June. He slashed .262/.354/.443 in the Rookie-level GCL.

Wilking Rodriguez Suspended for 80 Games

Wilking Rodriguez signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees this offseason to be a little bit of minor league depth for the bullpen. Rodriguez pitched fairly well this spring and now we may know why. Rodriguez was suspended for 80 games today after failing a steroid test for Furosemide. Rodriguez was assigned to Triple-A with the Scranton WIlkes-Barre RailRiders but has yet to get in a game this season.

Yankees Option Five More to Minor League Camp

The New York Yankees have announced their latest round of cuts from major league camp to minor league camp. The list of players going down includes OF Tyler Austin, RHP Danny Burawa and LHP Jose De Paula going to Triple-A while OF Mason Williams went to Double-A. RHP Wilking Rodriguez has been assigned to minor league camp but no affiliate was specifically mentioned.

Nick Rumbelow sent a scare to reporters this morning when his locker was cleared out but apparently, as of right now anyway, is still in Yankees camp. If you can look at me with a straight face and tell me the best team in leaving Tampa and going north with Austin in Scranton and Chris Young on the roster and truly mean it I'll give you $1.

Quick Hit: The August NO Trade Deadline

The August revocable waivers trade deadline has come and passed and according to the Yankees MLB Transactions page not much went on whatsoever. This has definitely been the August NO trade deadline while we all watched the Baltimore Orioles beef up their lineup and improve their infield depth. The Yankees are going with what they have as they continue to push towards a postseason spot. Anyone who is acquired today or for the rest of the season will not be eligible for the postseason so maybe Brian Cashman isn't done, but it is likely that he is.

On 8/5 the Washington Nationals claimed and acquired Matt Thornton in a straight waiver claim and took on his contract for the 2014 and 2015 season. The Yankees in return purchased the contract of Rich Hill and placed the lefty in the bullpen.

The Yankees signed minor league relief pitcher Wilking Rodriguez on 8/18 but released him on 8/30. Rodriguez was designated for assignment by the Kansas City Royals before coming over to New York and will now look to latch on with another major league team.

Finally, the Yankees made yet another marginal upgrade on 8/28 when the team acquired LHP Josh Outman for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Outman ended the Rich Hill era in New York.

Before the deadline passed the Yankees added a 27 year old relief pitcher out of the Miami Marlins organization named Chaz Roe. The new Shawn Kelley, I'm coining the term now.

That's it, that's all Brian Cashman and company could muster this month as the team needed obvious upgrades all over the field. The Yankees lost a LOOGY, added a LOOGY, and released that LOOGY when they acquired another LOOGY. Oh and Chaz Roe. Brilliant.

Yankees Sign Wilking Rodriguez

The New York Yankees have signed Wilking Rodriguez to a minor league deal and have stashed him in Triple-A with the Scranton RailRiders. Rodriguez was designated for assignment by the Kansas City Royals after the Royals acquired Josh Willingham from the Minnesota Twins. Rodriguez is 24 years old and has posted a 2.36 ERA this season between Double-A and Triple-A in 26.2 innings pitched.
