This Day In New York Yankees History 9/1: September Call Up Day

Surprisingly not much has happened on September call ups day in New York Yankees history but one bit of notable news happened on this day in 1931 when Lou Gehrig continued to hit grand slams. Gehrig's bases loaded blast would be his third in four days as the Yankees would beat the Boston Red Sox 5-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Also on this day in 1947 the Giants would break the 1936 Yankees record for most home runs hit in one season by a team. The New York Giants would break the record with the 185 team home runs and would finish the season with 221.

This Day in New York Yankees History 5/14: Dwight Gooden No-Hitter

On this day in 2015 the New York Yankees received some unfortunate news. The team learned they would lose Chase Whitley for the remainder of the year after leaving a start against the Tampa Bay Rays with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Whitley underwent Tommy John surgery before being claimed off waivers in the winter before 2016.

Also on this day in 1996 Dwight Gooden threw 135 pitches and threw a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees would win the game 2-0 and the 31 year old Gooden would become the eight Yankee pitcher to throw a no hitter in their history. Gooden hadn't won a game in nearly two years prior to the no hitter and was almost released a month prior after a slow start to his season.

Also on this day in 1967 Mickey Mantle kept his promise to his wife Merlyn and hit his 500th career home run on Mother's Day. The "Commerce Comet" was the sixth player to ever reach the 500 home run club when he hit a ball into the right field corner off Orioles pitcher Stu Miller.

Finally on this day in 1920 the New York Giants informed the New York Yankees that their lease to play in the Polo Grounds would not be renewed at the end of the season. The Yankees have played at the Polo Grounds since 1913 and will continue to play there until Yankee Stadium was completed in 1923. Speculation was that the Giants were not pleased with the acquisition of Babe Ruth for the Yankees and that was the reason they wanted them out of their stadium.

This Day in New York Yankees History 1/27: Giants play in Yankee Stadium

On this day in 1956 the New York football Giants switch their NFL home games to Yankee Stadium. This fueled tons of speculation that the baseball Giants would also be leaving the Polo Grounds.

The team also signed relief pitcher Chris Leroux on this day in 2014 but I didn’t figure many people cared about or cared for that signing much. Carry on.

Knicks, Yankees, Giants, the Ultimate Show Down for New York

The Star-Ledger recently released a color coded illustration of New York trying to compare the popularity of three popular New York sports teams, the New York Yankees, the New York Knicks, and the New York football Giants. The Yankees far and away have had the most success of the three teams, especially in the postseason, but may not be at the top of the list surprisingly.

As you can see by the graphic the New York Knicks appear to be the team of New York. I can't say I agree with that but okay, there you have it.  Yet another reason I prefer Twitter, @GreedyStripes, to Facebook.

Can't Predict Baseball: Baltimore Reaches 3,000 Wins

On this day in 1989 the Baltimore Orioles joined teams like the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and San Francisco (New York) Giants by winning their 3,000th game. The Orioles were also known as the St. Louis Browns before making the move to Baltimore. Awesome news for the city of Baltimore and the Orioles fans.

Can't Predict Baseball: No More Night Games In NY

On this day in 1942 New York City Police Commissioner Lewis J. Valentine announced that night games in New York are now banned for the duration of World War II. The All Star Game was set to be played in the Polo Grounds on Monday, July 6 of that year but the game time would be changed. This will also change the starting times for 28 games involving the Dodgers and the Giants.

The first night game played at Yankee Stadium was pushed back to 1946. Thanks Hitler.

This Day In New York Yankees History 10/2

On this day in 1932 the Yankees win their 12th consecutive game in the World Series sweeping their third consecutive World Series. The Yankees beat the Cubs 13-6 as they banged out 19 hits in the clincher.

On this day in 1936 the Yankees routed the New York Giants 18-4 in the most lopsided victory in the history of the World Series. The Yankees would take a two games to one lead in the series.

On this day in 1978 I have three words for you and all Boston Red Sox fans, Bucky F&#*ing Dent. The Yankees would score a 5-4 come from behind victory over the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park off a unlikely three run home run by Bucky Dent. Goose Gossage would get the save and the playoff spot for the New York Yankees on the final game of the season.

On this day in 1986 Don Mattingly set a new team record when he smashed his 232rd hit of the season establishing the new hits record for a single season. Earl Combs had the previous record when he hit 231 hits in the 1927 season. Mattingly finished with 238 hits for the season.

It's Still Baseball Season New York Yankees Fans!

So enough with all this New York Giants talk and let's support this team when they need it the most and not jump off the bandwagon as quick as you jumped back on it in August.

Super Bowl Sunday

I know that we are a Yankees blog but the home town New York Giants are playing right now in Super Bowl 46. Go Giants!
