Remembering Game Five of the 2000 Subway World Series
The 2000 World Series featured the New York Yankees and the New York Mets facing off in the World Series for the first time in their history. This was the first Subway Series since 1956 when the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees faced off. Let's take the time to remember Game 5 of the 2000 World Series.
In a rematch of the Game 1 pitchers duel Andy Pettitte took the mound for the Yankees and faced off against the Mets ace Al Leiter. Bernie Williams would get the scoring going with a solo home run in the top of the 2nd inning giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. The Mets would respond by getting two unearned runs across the board in the bottom of the 2nd and would keep that lead until the 6th inning when Derek Jeter hit a game tying home run. Heading into the 9th inning the game was tied a 2-2 each when Luis Sojo hit an RBI single off of Al Leiter to give the Yankees the lead and an errant throw that ended up in the Yankees dugout allowed a 4th run to score giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead going to the bottom of the 9th. Mike Piazza would come up in the 9th as the tying run in the 9th and hit a deep fly ball to center field that would find Bernie Williams glove and that would get the Yankees their third consecutive World Series victory. Mike Stanton would get the victory and Al Leiter would take the loss while Mariano Rivera notched his second save of the World Series in the clinching game.
This would be the Yankees 26th World Series victory overall and fourth in five years cementing the dynasty.

This Day in New York Yankees History 10/22: Damn You Jeff Weaver
On this day in 2003 the Yankees Jeff Weaver gave up a home run to the Marlins Alex Gonzalez to tie the series up at two games each and give the Marlins a 4-3 victory in 12 innings. This game also ended the Yankees consecutive games winning streak in extra innings at seven games.
Also on this day in 2000 in Game 2 of the Subway World Series the Yankees extended their World Series consecutive games winning streak to 14 games. The Yankees beat the Mets 6-5, not that anyone really remembers the score. This game will always be remembered for Roger Clemens innocently, yes I am completely biased and humble, throwing a bat in the general direction of Mike Piazza. This came on the heels of Clemens drilling Piazza in July which resulted in the benches clearing before cooler heads prevailed.
Also on this day in 1974 the Yankees and a Giants pulled off a trade that saw Bobby Bonds come to New York and Bobby Murcer head to San Francisco. This, at the time of course, was considered to be the biggest one for one trade in the history of baseball. Both players made over $600,000 marking the first time two players making that much money were traded in the same deal. Murcer was donned the next Mickey Mantle while Bonds was donned the next Willie Mays so this was a huge trade at the time.
Finally on this day in 1967 Joe DiMaggio was named the Athletics executive vice president and consultant for the team. DiMaggio was also named a part time hitting coach and a public relations advocate for the club although Joe would leave the A's after just two years with the organization.

This Day in New York Yankees History 10/21: 4:51 World Series Game
Also on this day in 1998 the Yankees completed a four game sweep of the San Diego Padres by winning 3-0. The Yankees would win their 24th World Series title in their storied history and the 125th win of the season with the regular and post season’s combined.
Finally on this day in 1976, older Yankees fan turn your heads here because you are not going to like this, the Yankees lost their fourth consecutive game getting swept in the World Series. The "Big Red Machine" proved to be too much for the Yankees team. The Reds would win 7-2 behind a two run home run and a three run home run from Johnny Bench.

The Cry For Homegrown Talent May Be Ill Advised: 2000
Infield looks awfully familiar with Tino Martinez at first, Knoblauch at second, Brosius at third, Yankee farm hands Derek Jeter at shortstop and Jorge Posada behind the plate, and Jose Canseco(Athletics, Devil Rays) and Glenallen Hill (Cubs) getting the bulk of the DH time. Jim Leyritz did get some time as the designated hitter before Canseco was acquired dumped on the team.
The outfield was a mess in 2000 before the Yankees acquired David Justice from the Cleveland Indians to finish the year as their every day left fielder. The Yankees had their locks at center field with Bernie Williams and Paul O'Neill in right field but left field was a mess. Clay Bellinger (Yankees), Lance Johnson (White Sox and Cubs), Felix Jose (Royals and Cardinals), Roberto Kelly (Yankees from 87-92), Ricky Ledee (Yankees), Luis Polonia (Angels), Shane Spencer, and Ryan Thompson (Mets) all spent time in left field.
The pitching staff didn't get much of an upgrade in 2000 over the 1999 team. Roger Clemens, Orlando Hernandez, David Cone, and Andy Pettitte were all there and they were joined by former Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves right hander David Cone.
The bullpen looked similar as well with mainstays Mike Stanton, Jeff Nelson, Jason Grimsley and Mariano Rivera getting the bulk of the calls from Joe Torre. The new guy this season was Randy Choate as he burst from the Yankees system to help out of the bullpen along with Ramiro Mendoza.
The Yankees used more and more homegrown talent in the bullpen but still relied on trades and free agency to collect their fourth World Series title in five seasons. Joe Torre, Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neill, Bernie Williams, Scott Brosius, Chuck Knoblauch, and Jim Leyritz among others would never see another World Series in Yankees pinstripes.

Quick Hit: Mike Piazza vs. the Yankees
The newest members of the Hall of Fame according to the
Baseball Writers Association of America are Seattle Mariners center fielder Ken
Griffey Jr. and New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza. We have taken a
disheartening look at how Griffey Jr. terrorized the Yankees during his career
so it feels only right to do the same with Piazza. Piazza played his entire
career in the National League with the Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers so the
amount of times he saw the Yankees were limited but there was the Subway Series
in Interleague play and the 2000 World Series matchup between the Yankees and
Mets. Did Piazza make Yankees fans tremble before every interleague season?
| I | Split | G | PA | R | H | 2B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG | OPS | BAbip | tOPS+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New York Yankees | 41 | 176 | 27 | 46 | 10 | 8 | 26 | 0 | 20 | 26 | .301 | .381 | .523 | .904 | .314 | 97 |
Roger Clemens sure didn’t fear Piazza, he threw a splintered
bat “in his general direction” in the 2000 World Series but it did look
like many of the Yankees pitchers were scared of him. Piazza finished his career against the Yankees with a .300 average with eight home runs and 26 RBI in just 41 games. Multiply that by four for roughly a full season total and you have 32 home runs and 108 RBI with 80 walks, 40 doubles and 184 hits. Ouch.

Steroid Era Players, Welcome to the Hall of Fame!
The flood gates are open ladies and gentleman as the first
player from the steroid era to either be linked to or suspected of steroid use
has made his way into Cooperstown, New York. Congratulations goes out to former
New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza on his Hall of Fame
candidacy, it’s been a long time coming. It’s also a sign that the times are
changing around Major League Baseball, especially in the Hall of Fame voting
process. Jon Heyman already went out and defended the fact that he put Barry
Bonds on his HOF ballot and you can see now that the numbers for Bonds and
Clemens are continuing to rise every year giving hope to anyone and everyone
from the steroid era. With Piazza’s induction I can see more and more players
from that era getting in, eventually.
Piazza shared the same stage as Ken Griffey Jr. on Wednesday
and will share that same stage when they are officially inducted into the Hall
later this year. How can you keep out Clemens and Bonds when the sole reason
that Piazza was left off was his suspicion of steroid use? You can’t and the
doors are about to be ripped from their hinges.
Piazza was a 12-time All-Star and hit 427 home runs in his
career with a .922 OPS which both set the tone for the offensive catcher that
we see in today’s game. Piazza was a trend setter and he changed the game,
suspicion for steroids or not. And that’s the thing, he’s suspected of it. He
was never linked to steroids during his career, he wasn’t on the Mitchell
Report, and he wasn’t linked to BALCO or Biogenesis or whatever the craze was
back then. Nothing. He hit home runs in an era that was tainted by many that
hit home runs. That’s all. A wrong has been righted and I can’t say I have ever
been prouder of the BBWAA right now. Congrats Mike and congrats to Junior
Griffey!
Isn’t it ironic that the man that Roger Clemens threw a
splintered bat at during the 2000 World Series between the New York Yankees and
the New York Mets may be the same man that gets him into the Hall of Fame?
Should Clemens send a thank you card? How does one react in these situations? I
for sure don’t know…

This Day in New York Yankees History 10/24: El Duque Orlando Hernandez
Orlando Hernandez was a God send to the New York Yankees
during their Dynasty run during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, especially in
the postseason. El Duque started his career 8-0 with a 1.90 ERA in the
postseason before the Mets got to him on this day in 2000. The Mets beat the
Yankees on this day in the Subway World Series after Benny Agbayani hit a game
winning 8th inning double to give the Metropolitan's a 4-2 win. New
York native and Mets closer John Franco secured the victory for the Mets ending
the Yankees 14 game World Series winning streak.

On this
day in 2000 the Yankees would beat the Mets in the longest World Series game

The Cry For Homegrown Talent May Be Ill Advised: 2000
Another season and another World Series for the New York Yankees in the year 2000. This would be the last World Series the Yankees would win for nine more seasons after a couple heartbreaking losses in 2001 and 2003. Will this Yankees team be any different in the homegrown players department or will it be more of the same? Spoiler alert, it's going to be more of the same. Let's look:
Infield looks awfully familiar with Tino Martinez at first, Knoblauch at second, Brosius at third, Yankee farm hands Derek Jeter at shortstop and Jorge Posada behind the plate, and Jose Canseco(Athletics, Devil Rays) and Glenallen Hill (Cubs) getting the bulk of the DH time.
