Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Miami Marlins 8/21

Tonight the New York Yankees and the Miami Marlins will begin a quick two-game interleague series down in Marlins Park, welcome back Giancarlo! In the start tonight the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka out to the mound looking to start a new unbeaten streak while the Marlins will counter with a young pitcher in Pablo Lopez. Let’s get to it down inside Marlins Park in Miami.

Tanaka has lost each of his last two starts after going 14 starts consecutively without taking a loss prior. In his last start the Yankees right-hander allowed just two runs over six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays, but ell victim to bad run support from the Yankees offense in a loss.

Lopez was shaky in his last start against the Atlanta Braves allowing six runs in 5.1 innings pitched in a loss for the Marlins. Lopez will be making his ninth career MLB start tonight and will look to improve on his 38 K’s and 12 walks that he has allowed thus far.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Marlins Park in Miami and can be seen on the YES Network. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman.

Enjoy the game, Tanaka better strike out every time he comes up to bat and go Yankees!!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Philadelphia Phillies 6/27

Good morning Yankees family. Today the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies finish off their three-game set this week inside Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia with another great pitching matchup. As much as I would just like it to be a pitching matchup we have to remember that the two men toeing the rubber in the finale of this set also have to take their hacks at the plate as well. Donned with that task for the Yankees is Luis Cessa while the Phillies will counter with Zach Eflin. Let’s get to it here in Philadelphia.

Cessa will make his first start of the season for New York tonight after making four relief appearances for the club thus far this season. Cessa missed time on the disabled list this season and has been limited to just six innings pitched at the Major League level.

Eflin will be making his first start against the New York Yankees of his career tonight and heads into the start on a roll. During the month of June, Eflin has pitched to a 4-0 record with a 2.28 ERA including a strong start against the Washington Nationals in his last start.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and can be seen on the YES Network. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast on WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman.

Enjoy the game, get out intact, and go Yankees!!

This Day in New York Yankees History 6/16: RIP Tony Gwynn

On this day in 2014 Major League Baseball lost a great soul when Tony Gwynn lost his battle with cancer and passed away at his home.

Also on this day in 2006 the Yankees played a regular season game in Washington D.C. for the first time in 35 years. The Yankees would beat the Nationals at RFK Stadium 7-5. The last time the Yankees played in the nation's capital was September 30, 1971 where the Yankees beat the Washington Senators 9-0. The fans were upset about losing the Senators for the second time since 1961 and refused to leave the field with their team ahead by two runs in the season finale.

Also on this day in 1997 the New York Mets would play, and beat, the New York Yankees for the first time ever in the regular season. The Mets would win 6-0 behind a Dave Milicki complete game shutout.

Also on this day in 1996 the legendary Mel Allen lost his battle with heart failure, he was 83 years old, Allen was in the Hall of Fame and best known for his play by play work with the New York Yankees. Allen was best known for his "How About That?" moniker.

Also on this day in 1962 Jerry Kindall of the Cleveland Indians hits a two run walk off home run to give his team a 10-9 victory. Yogi Berra was playing left field and probably had a bit of deja vu after seeing Bill Mazeroski's Game 7 home run in the 1960 World Series also go over his head for a big loss.

Finally on this day in 1953 the New York Yankees 18 game winning streak comes to an end at the hands of the St. Louis Browns. The Browns would snap their own 14 game losing streak in the battle in the Bronx that handed Whitey Ford his first loss in eight decisions.

Remembering Game Five of the 2000 Subway World Series

The 2000 World Series featured the New York Yankees and the New York Mets facing off in the World Series for the first time in their history. This was the first Subway Series since 1956 when the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees faced off. Let's take the time to remember Game 5 of the 2000 World Series.
In a rematch of the Game 1 pitchers duel Andy Pettitte took the mound for the Yankees and faced off against the Mets ace Al Leiter. Bernie Williams would get the scoring going with a solo home run in the top of the 2nd inning giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. The Mets would respond by getting two unearned runs across the board in the bottom of the 2nd and would keep that lead until the 6th inning when Derek Jeter hit a game tying home run. Heading into the 9th inning the game was tied a 2-2 each when Luis Sojo hit an RBI single off of Al Leiter to give the Yankees the lead and an errant throw that ended up in the Yankees dugout allowed a 4th run to score giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead going to the bottom of the 9th. Mike Piazza would come up in the 9th as the tying run in the 9th and hit a deep fly ball to center field that would find Bernie Williams glove and that would get the Yankees their third consecutive World Series victory. Mike Stanton would get the victory and Al Leiter would take the loss while Mariano Rivera notched his second save of the World Series in the clinching game.

This would be the Yankees 26th World Series victory overall and fourth in five years cementing the dynasty.

Remembering Game One of the 2000 Subway World Series

The 2000 World Series featured the New York Yankees and the New York Mets facing off in the World Series for the first time in their history. This was the first Subway Series since 1956 when the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees faced off. Let's take the time to remember Game 1 of the 2000 World Series.

The Yankees sent Andy Pettitte to the mound to face off against the Mets Al Leiter on a very important date in baseball history, October 21st. This was the day that Carlton Fisk hit his home run in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series and on the same day the Philadelphia Phillies won their first World Series on this day in 1980. Both starting pitchers had shut outs going into the 6th inning until David Justice knocked a two run double to put the Yankees up 2-0. Andy Pettitte would quickly lose the lead in the 7th after hit after hit off the savvy lefty including an Edgardo Alfonzo hit to give the Mets the 3-2 lead. Chuck Knoblauch would have a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th inning off Mets closer Armando Benitez to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Jose Vizcaino would be the unlikeliest of heroes when he would knock in Tino Martinez with his fourth hit of the game to give the Yankees a 4-3 victory and a 1-0 lead in the Subway World Series. Mike Stanton would get the win and Mets pitcher Turk Wendell would take the loss.

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Washington Nationals 5/16

Tonight's game has been suspended as well as the continuation of last night's game that was suspended in the 6th with the score 3-3. These games will both be made up on June 18th.

And just like that it is game time once again here in the Nation’s Capital as the New York Yankees made the trip to Nationals Park to take on the Washington Nationals. In the finale of this quick two-game set the Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound to face off with Max Scherzer for the Nats. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Nationals Park in Washington D.C. and can be seen on the YES Network locally and ESPN nationally. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat App and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast with the legendary duo of John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Washington Nationals 5/16

Good morning everyone and welcome back to the Nation’s Capital as the Washington Nationals and Nationals Park play host to the New York Yankees. In the finale of this quick two-game series the Yankees will send CC Sabathia and his bad knees to the mound and to the batter’s box to square off with Max Scherzer of the Nationals. Please strike out, CC. Please. Every time. Let’s get to it here in Washington D.C.

Sabathia has made five starts since coming off the disabled list back in April and has posted a 2-0 record with a 1.65 ERA giving the Yankees exactly what they needed along the way. Sabathia has made three starts against the Nationals throughout his career and has posted a 2-1 record with a 2.25 ERA.

Scherzer will get his first start tonight against the Yankees since joining the Washington Nationals back in 2015. Scherzer has been a strikeout machine here in 2018 and is on pace to lead the National League in strikeouts for the third straight season.

Enjoy the game, beat up on the Natinals (not a typo), and go Yankees!!

Hello… Pitchers Having to Hit RANT

Good morning everyone and welcome back to Interleague Play. I know I probably make this rant every single year, but it is only because I feel so strongly about it. I can appreciate the fact that there is diversity in Major League Baseball between the American League and the National League, and I very much appreciate the differences in the leagues, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it when the Yankees head to a National League park. Why? Pitchers having to hit.

I can buy into the whole “strategy” and old-school feel of the game having a pitcher hit or bunt three-or-four times a night, the pinch-hitting aspects, moving runners over, and playing small ball… but, again, it doesn’t mean that I have to like it.

I cannot stand watching a pitcher that has no business swinging a bat, and a pitcher that likely hasn’t really swung a bat with any consistency since high school or college, having to go up at the Major League level and take swings. It is an injury risk, hello Chein-Ming Wang, and it just zaps any of the fun out of the inning in my opinion. I know it is just my opinion and some fans absolutely love seeing it, I just don’t personally.

So, to Masahiro Tanaka and especially to CC Sabathia this week in Washington… take it slow. Strike out or bunt if you have to, and for the love of everything good in this world make it out in one piece this week. Thanks in advance.

And to my Kari, 15 more days… I love you!!!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. New York Mets 8/15

The New York Yankees and New York Mets are back at it again tonight in the second game of the annual Subway Series. These games mean a little bit more to some than in years past after all the back-and-forth that has been going on regarding trades, failed trades, backed out of trades and the sort. Officials for both the Yankees and the Mets have been quite vocal against each other recently and while that likely means nothing to the players in the grand scheme of things it tends to just make it a little bit more fun for the fans. Especially when I can scream “to hell with the Mets” on twitter and get a ton of retweets and such, shameless plug of @GreedyStripes on Twitter. In the start tonight the Yankees will send Sonny Gray to the mound to square off against Jacob DeGrom for the Mets. This is the final game in the Bronx before the series shifts to Queens for the next two nights so check it out live if you can make it.

Gray will make his third start for the Yankees tonight and his first start at home for the Bombers after losing his first two starts out on the road. Gray pitched well in both starts but errors and a lack of run support, literally zero run support actually as the Yankees have yet to score in a game that Gray started, has led to Gray taking the loss against the Cleveland Indians and the Toronto Blue Jays.

DeGrom makes his first start since suffering a right triceps contusion in his last start. DeGrom has been nasty since June 7 posting a 9-2 record with a 1.82 ERA in 79.1 innings so the Mets are hoping that the 99-MPH line drive off DeGrom’s right arm will not affect the way he pitches tonight in the Bronx.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. We as Yankees fans need to get this trending…. To Hell With the Mets!! Go Yankees!!

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV. Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Cincinnati Reds 7/25

The New York Yankees are back from the west coast, back in the Bronx and ready to continue their climb back towards the top of the American League East Division. Standing in their way over the next two games will be the Cincinnati Reds who come into this final week before the July 31st trading deadline presumably as sellers and as a team that is looking to play spoiler any chance they can. That’s going to have to start on Friday though as the Yankees will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound tonight looking to lock down the Reds offense. Meanwhile the Reds will send Luis Castillo to the mound looking for a victory for Cincinnati. Interleague play, let’s do it.

Montgomery heads into the start tonight fresh off his first loss since the month of May last time out against the Minnesota Twins. In the start Montgomery allowed six runs on seven hits in six innings of work dropping his season win/loss record to 4-2 and raising his ERA to 3.63 in 11 starts.

Castillo also took the loss in his last start against the Arizona Diamondbacks allowing four runs on Thursday. Castillo was doomed from the start allowing three runs in the first inning before making an adjustment when he got back to the dugout before settling down.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. This time the pitchers don’t have to hit! Enjoy it and Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Cincinnati Reds 5/9

Here we go ladies and gentleman, it is game time in Cincinnati as the Cincinnati Reds play host to the New York Yankees in the second and final game of this quick two-game interleague series. Last night was Masahiro Tanaka’s turn to take the ball for the Yankees and tonight it is CC Sabathia’s turn who is looking to turn around a recent rough string of starts. The man looking to keep the Yankees offense in check, and good luck with that lately, is Tim Adleman for the Reds. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside the Great American Ball Park and can be seen on FOX Sports One. You can also follow along on the radio if you’re blacked out on WFAN.

Interact with us all season long by giving us a follow on Twitter. Our Twitter account is @GreedyStripes.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Cincinnati Reds 5/9

And just like that the series between the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds is over. Well, it will be over tonight anyway as these two teams complete their quick two-game interleague series tonight inside the Great American Ball Park. Stand up for the Judge and release the Kraken because the ball should be flying out of Cincinnati tonight if the opposing offenses have anything to say about it. There are two men donned with the task of keeping the ball in the ballpark and they are CC Sabathia for the Yankees and Tim Adleman for the Reds.

Sabathia has been absolutely horrible in his last three starts which is beginning to cause concern here in the Bronx. After a great start to the season Sabathia has posted a 10.43 ERA in his last three starts lasting just 14.2 innings while allowing 17 earned runs on five home runs. How about more of the early season Sabathia and less of this guy.

Adleman last faced the Pittsburgh Pirates allowing two runs in six innings of work which resulted in a 4-2 victory for the Reds. Adleman is especially tough against left-handed bats while right-handers are hitting over .300 against him this season so don’t expect Aaron Judge or Gary Sanchez to see much to hit tonight because if they get a good pitch to hit it’s going to go a long way out in Cincinnati.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside the Great American Ball Park and can be seen on Fox Sports One. I’m, again, not sure how the Fox and their affiliates broadcast affects MLB TV so you will just have to check in at game time. If anyone knows beforehand please let me know and I’ll update the post. If it is blacked out you can always follow along on the radio with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on the WFAN broadcast.

Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Chicago Cubs 5/6

Here we go ladies and gents! The lights are on, the fans have filed in and the teams are on the field. It is officially game time between the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs as these two teams play in the middle game of their three-game weekend set. The Yankees will send rookie Jordan Montgomery to the mound tonight looking to keep the good times rolling for New York while the Cubs will expect more out of LHP Brett Anderson than they have been getting as of late. The game will be played at 7:15 pm ET inside Wrigley Field and can be seen on FOX. You can also follow along on the radio by tuning into John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Chicago Cubs 5/6

Ladies and gentleman we are in for a treat tonight as the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs are back at it again inside Wrigley Field. This time these two teams will be playing under the lights though as Wrigley hosts these two historic MLB teams for a primetime matchup. With such a great matchup comes great responsibility and the two pitchers shouldered with such pressure are Jordan Montgomery for the Yankees, the rookie, and Brett Anderson for the Cubs, the veteran. This should be another fun one in the Windy City.

Montgomery has been just what the Yankees needed out of him since making his MLB debut with the team last month. Montgomery keeps the Yankees in every game and gives his teammates a chance to win and that was on display in his last start as well against the Baltimore Orioles. In the start Montgomery allowed three runs in five innings of work keeping the Yankees around long enough for Aaron Judge and company to bash the team to victory.

Anderson did not keep his team in the game and did not give Chicago a chance to win the game last time out lasting just 1.1 innings while giving up seven runs on seven hits. In Anderson’s defense he was dealing with heavy winds and rain during his last start but either way I’ll take that kind of production out of him once again tonight in Chicago.

The game will be played at 7:15 pm ET inside Wrigley Field and can be seen on FOX. I’m not sure how this will affect MLB TV but I’d venture to say the game will be blacked out everywhere but on FOX. You can also follow along on the radio with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Enjoy the game and as always Go Yankees!
