Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/14

Saturday afternoon baseball has arrived as the New York Yankees made the trip to Detroit and Comerica Park to take on the Detroit Tigers. In the start this afternoon the Yankees will send Luis Cessa to the mound to face off with Francisco Liriano for the Tigers. The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB Network. You can also follow along on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast on WFAN with the legendary John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/14

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers will continue their three-game set this weekend with the middle game of the series this afternoon in Detroit. The Yankees called up a pair of pitchers after losing CC Sabathia to a hip injury, Luis Cessa and Domingo German, and Aaron Boone had those two to decide from when deciding who would make this afternoon’s start. Boone ultimately decided that Luis Cessa would make the start this afternoon facing off with Francisco Liriano for the Tigers. Let’s get to it.

Cessa will make the start this afternoon over German, likely his only start with Sabathia expected back on Tuesday. Cessa has posted a 4.54 ERA in 73.3 innings as a Major League starter since coming over to the Yankees from the Detroit Tigers in December of 2015.

Liriano did not get a full spring training here in 2018, but he hasn’t show any affects of it thus far this season. Liriano had made two good starts for Detroit thus far in 2018 including his last start where he took a no-hitter into the fifth inning against the Cleveland Indians in an eventual 2-0 loss.

The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park in Detroit and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB Network. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat app or by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Enjoy the game, even if it doesn’t mean we are going to be seeing Luis Cessa on the mound once again and go Yankees!!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/13

And just like that it is game time on this Friday the 13th between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers. In the first of this three-game weekend set the Yankees will send out Jordan Montgomery taking CC Sabathia’s turn in the rotation while the Tigers will counter with former Houston Astros starter Mike Fiers. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen on the YES Network. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast on WFAN.

Follow us on Twitter, @GreedyStripes, and “Like” us on Facebook, The Greedy Pinstripes, to keep up with us and the team all season long. Enjoy the game, Fiers you’re not in Houston anymore, and go Yankees!!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/13

The New York Yankees are out of Boston and heading to Detroit to begin a three-game weekend set with the Detroit Tigers this weekend inside Comerica Park. The Tigers are in the midst of a total rebuild giving the Yankees a huge advantage on paper, but if the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles have taught us anything this season thus far it is that the games are unfortunately not played on paper. They are played in real life, and in real life the Yankees have to put in the work in order to win. Given that task for the Yankees tonight is Jordan Montgomery taking CC Sabathia’s turn in the rotation while the Tigers give the ball to Mike Fiers. Should be a good one, let’s get to it.

Montgomery was not sharp in his last start against the Baltimore Orioles allowing a career-high 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Montgomery allowed four runs as well in a no-decision inside Yankee Stadium. This will mark the first time in his career that the young Yankees left-hander will face the Detroit Tigers.

Fiers was great in his Tigers debut last weekend against the Chicago White Sox and will look to replicate that tonight for Detroit against the Bronx Bombers. In that start Fiera pitched six scoreless innings allowing just three hits with six strikeouts in the victory, all despite his velocity being 90 MPH or below in each of his pitches in the start.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park in Detroit and can be seen on the YES Network. You can also follow along using MLB TV, the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast on WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman.

Enjoy the game, don’t pitch to Miggy, and go Yankees!!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 8/24

Afternoon baseball in downtown Detroit, let’s get to it. In the finale of this three-game set today the New York Yankees will send Jaime Garcia to the mound to square off with Michael Fulmer for the Tigers. Fulmer has to be frustrated with the offense behind him and the Yankees have to be frustrated with what Garcia has given them thus far so one of these stories could conceivably turn around this afternoon in Comerica. The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars, on the radio or at work like I will be doing by tuning into WFAN.

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers will finish up their three-game set this afternoon inside Comerica Park with another interesting pitching matchup. This afternoon the Yankees will send Jaime Garcia to the mound who will be making his fourth start of his Yankees career while the Tigers will counter with Michael Fulmer. Don’t let Fulmer’s wins and loss record fool you, he has pitched much better than his record shows so be careful.

Garcia has an ERA of 6.32 as a starting pitcher for the New York Yankees which really frustrates me as a fan. Jordan Montgomery needed to limit his innings but him pitching 3-4 innings a night would be better than what Garcia has given the Yankees thus far in my opinion. Garcia took a no-decision against the Mets last time out.

Fulmer has been the victim of poor run support all season long for the Tigers. Four of Fulmer’s losses this season have come in games where the Tigers offense was shutout and three of his losses came in which Fulmer gave up just one run. Fulmer is still a great pitcher, his offense behind him just isn’t doing him any favors here in 2017.

The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Need a win, get a win. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 8/23

And just like that ladies and gentleman it is game time in Detroit as the Detroit Tigers and Comerica Park play host to the New York Yankees in the middle game of their three-game set. In the matchup tonight the Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound, the future and the now, while the Tigers will counter with Jordan Zimmermann. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 8/23

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers are back at it again tonight inside Comerica Park with the middle game of their three-game set. In the matchup tonight the Yankees will send their new ace and arguably their best pitcher this season in Luis Severino to the mound while the Tigers will counter with Jordan Zimmermann who has struggled for much of the 2017 campaign. This seems like a winnable game for the Yankees on paper so they need to win it. No excuses, period. Need a win, get a win.

Severino has been a winner in five of last six outing with the one blip on the radar coming a couple weekends back against the Boston Red Sox. Over that time period Severino has allowed just 10 earned runs and 29 hits in 36.1 innings pitched. Severino will be on a bit of extra rest tonight as the last time the right-hander took the mound was on August 17 against the New York Mets.

Zimmermann has given up seven runs in back-to-back outings which is a trend that hopefully continues tonight against the Yankees. Before these two horrific starts Zimmermann looked to be turning around a tough season as he threw three straight seven-inning quality starts but has since regressed to his earlier season struggles.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park, home of the Tigers, and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV. You can also follow along with the game in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Enjoy the game, need a win so get a win, and Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 8/22

Ladies and gentleman it is game time inside Comerica Park between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers. In the opener of this three-game set the Yankees will activate and welcome Masahiro Tanaka back off the disabled list, Happy Tanaka Day ladies and gentleman, while the Tigers will counter with Matthew Boyd. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast.

Follow us on Twitter by following @GreedyStripes and enjoy the game. Aaron Judge needs to wake up because “we need a win, so get a win.” Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 8/22

The New York Yankees needed a day off yesterday to lick their wounds after being pounded by the Red Sox in two of their three games over the weekend and the team got just that before heading to Detroit to take on the Detroit Tigers in a three-game series. In the opener tonight the Yankees will activate Masahiro Tanaka off the disabled list to take the ball against Matthew Boyd for the Tigers. The Tigers are a rebuilding team and the Yankees need to beat the teams they are supposed to beat on paper if they want to make the postseason in 2017… so do it. Sounds easy enough, right?

Tanaka comes off the disabled list tonight after taking a rest due to some shoulder inflammation. In Tanaka’s last start the right-hander lasted just four innings against the Toronto Blue Jays before being removed from the contest. Tanaka allowed three runs in the start, two of them earned, before being replaced by the strong Yankees bullpen.

Boyd struggled against the Minnesota Twins in his last start in which he lasted just 5.2 innings on Sunday. Boyd allowed two early home runs in the contest which doomed him from the start and will be facing another strong home run hitting team tonight in the Yankees.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park, home of the Tigers, and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Need a win, get a win. Go Yankees!!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 6/2

Let’s makeup this game and let’s get on to Baltimore before it gets too late in the evening. The Yankees were scheduled to be off tonight before a rained out game in April led to these two teams matching up tonight inside Comerica Park. In the matchup the Yankees will send Michael Pineda to the mound looking to be more like “Big Mike” than “Big Problem” while the Tigers send Matt Boyd to the mound for his second consecutive spot start. The game will be played at 7:40 pm ET and can be seen locally on the YES Network and everywhere on MLB TV.

One and done. Hopefully that done is a victory. Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 6/2

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers will play in a makeup game tonight inside Comerica Park after their game on April 10th was postponed due to inclement weather. This was a scheduled off day for the Yankees which hurts to lose but Mother Nature is going to do what Mother Nature is going to do I guess. Tonight in the contest the Yankees will send Michael Pineda to the mound despite his struggles this season and his 6.92 ERA to face off with the Tigers starter Matt Boyd.

Pineda has the highest ERA of any qualified starter in the Major Leagues as we touched on in the previous paragraph but the Yankees want to give the right-hander a chance to figure it out in the Bronx rather than use him last remaining minor league option sending him down. Pineda has struggled with locating and command so maybe Larry Rothschild and company have it figured out before tonight’s start in Detroit. If not it may be a long, long night for the Bombers.

Boyd will be making his second spot start of the season for the Tigers tonight as Detroit looks to juggle their rotation around this makeup game. Boyd made a spot start last Saturday in Oakland against the Athletics and will be making his first start against a Yankees offense that has struggled mightily against left-handed pitching this season thus far.

The game will be played at 7:40 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. Good news for Detroit residents and fans alike as all paid tickets for the April 10th game that was postponed will be honored tonight in Detroit. One game in the standings but this game means so much more than just one game for the Yankees and for Pineda.  Pineda needs a win in the worst way. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/10

EDIT: This game has been rained/snowed out. No official makeup date has been announced. Masahiro Tanaka will not start again until Tuesday.

This game has been in doubt all day because of snow and rain alongside some frigid temperatures but somehow mother nature has allowed this one to get underway so let's make the best out of a cold situation. Tonight the Yankees play for the first time on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball and they face off with the Detroit Tigers with Masahiro Tanaka taking the mound against Justin Verlander.

The game will be played at 8:35 pm ET inside of Comerica Park and can be seen on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball broadcast. Enjoy and go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/10

For the first time this season, at least for me, we will be entertained with the New York Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball presented by ESPN. Out the door are Curt Schilling and John Kruk and in their place are former Yankees and Reds third baseman Aaron Boone and Jessica Mendoza. As you know I didn't watch MLB's Opening Night because I was watching the Walking Dead finale, pee-pee pants city yet?, so tonight is my first Sunday experience with the duo. In the matchup the Yankees will send their ace Masahiro Tanaka to the mound on normal rest to make his second start of the season while the Tigers counter with Justin Verlander.

Tanaka threw just 87 pitches in his first start of the season as he began the trend of Yankees pitchers going five innings plus or less (which CC Sabathia broke yesterday afternoon) in their starts this season. Tanaka went 5.2 innings on Opening Day against the Houston Astros allowing just two runs on four hits including that moon shot that Carlos Correa hit and complained of fatigue towards the end of the start. Was it the cold or was it the way New York handled and coddled him in spring training? Or is it something else entirely? We'll start to get that answer tonight in Detroit.

Verlander made a great start in his first start of the season taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the powerful Miami Marlins. Verlander ended up giving up three hits in his final five batters of the contest including a two-run home run to Giancarlo Stanton but the start was still a successful one for Verlander. Justin Verlander hasn't beaten the Yankees since 2012 and hopefully that streak is still a thing after tonight's contest.

The game will be played at 8:35 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen locally and nationally on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball program. I'll watch this over Fear The Walking Dead anytime so hopefully the team makes it worth it. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/9

Ladies and gentleman I believe this is the third straight afternoon game for the New York Yankees this season, you have to love early season baseball. It’s cold in the morning, warm in the afternoons and frigid again at night leaving many of the April games to be played while most of us are at work. That’s all fine and well though when the game is on a Saturday afternoon so let’s get to it with CC Sabathia taking the mound against Mike Pelfrey inside Comerica Park.

The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network and MLB TV while you can also listen along on WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Also if you’re looking to grab a pair of Yankees tickets for when the team returns home to the Bronx click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog to secure your seats now. We can’t help you with the costumes though, John Oliver may have to help you with that.

Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/9

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers will continue their three-game weekend series today with the middle game inside Comerica Park. Each team flashed and showed off their shiny new toys in yesterday afternoon’s game and today we get a matchup between a couple of old veterans with something to prove in the Yankees lefty CC Sabathia and Mike Pelfrey for Detroit.

Sabathia won the 5th spot in the Yankees rotation over Ivan Nova and Bryan Mitchell in a spring competition despite going 1-3 with a 5.51 ERA in five spring training starts. General Manager Brian Cashman said the decision is not necessarily permanent and that Nova could earn his way back into the rotation while Sabathia takes his place in the bullpen so the big lefty has a lot to prove early and often this season.

Pelfrey is making his Detroit Tigers debut inside Comerica Park just a day removed from Jordan Zimmermann making his debut there as well and is coming off a solid spring training as well. Pelfrey finished the spring with a 2-2 record and a 2.66 ERA in five Grapefruit League starts and is looking to continue that success when the games actually mean something while he tries to resurrect his career at the same time.

The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen locally on the YES Network and nationally on MLB Network and MLB TV. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/8

Ladies and gentleman it’s game time between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers have enjoyed their home Opening Day ceremonies inside Comerica Park and Jordan Zimmermann, the Tiger’s new toy in the starting rotation, is set to take the mound to make his debut for his new team against Luis Severino and the New York Yankees. The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

Sigh, yet another game that comes on while I am at work. Yet another game I will miss. Early season baseball, it’s so bittersweet. Anyway, I digress. Click the Yankees tickets link at the top of the site to have your tickets, your real cardboard tickets of course, in hand when the boys return home to the Bronx and Yankee Stadium.

Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/8

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers kick off the second round of series in this young 2016 season this afternoon inside of Comerica Park. Both teams will get to show off some new, shiny toys this afternoon as the Yankees send their rookie sensation that burst onto the scene in 2015 in Luis Severino to the mound to face off against recently acquired Jordan Zimmermann for the Detroit Tigers.

Severino will be making his 12th career start for the Yankees this afternoon after the Tigers’ home Opening Day ceremonies are completed. Severino looks to build on an 11-start rookie campaign in 2015 where he made eight quality starts, none of those 11 were against the Tigers though unfortunately.

Zimmermann makes his first start for his new team after leaving the Washington Nationals and joining the Detroit Tigers this offseason. The Tigers haven’t had a pitcher make his debut for his new team in a home opener since Mark Redman did so in 2002 so there will be a ton of weight and pressure on the shoulders and right arm of Zimmermann today in Detroit.

The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET inside Comerica Park and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. Let’s welcome Zimmermann to the American League the best way that we know how, rudely. Lots of offense and a victory. Get it done. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/23

The New York Yankees have been out on the road for what feels like a month now and will finally return home after today’s game with the Detroit Tigers. We may be in for what I like to call a “Rob Manfred Special” type of game where four runs or less are scored between the two teams and the games are over in about two and a half hours, especially when you consider that Masahiro Tanaka is on the mound for the Yankees and Anibal Sanchez is pitching for the Tigers. The game will be played at 1:08 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network, and MLB TV.

Get your Yankees tickets now before the team comes home to host the new best team in baseball, the New York Mets, and the Tampa Bay Rays. For the Rays series the Yankees are having Masahiro Tanaka Bobble Head Night at Yankee Stadium so you’ll want to show up early and have tickets in hand for that one. Click our Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog and see what we and our friends at Ticket Monster can do for you. If you’d rather stay home and watch, and who could blame you, jump on Twitter and give us a follow (@GreedyStripes) or jump on the comments section of the site and interact with us during the game. We like to put the social part in social media and we thoroughly enjoy interacting with you guys.

That’s enough from me though, Mr. Tanaka will do my speaking for me now (through his interpreter of course). Go Yankees! #TanaKa

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers 4/23

The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers finish off their four game set this week at Comerica Park in Detroit with what looks to be yet another good pitching matchup. The first game of the series saw a CC Sabathia gem wasted away in the 8th inning while the second game saw a similar gem thrown by the Yankees Nathan Eovaldi. Alfredo Simon was that much better for Detroit in Game One and Kyle Lobstein pitched extremely well for the Tigers in Game Two before the bullpen blew it late. In Game Three David Price and Adam Warren went head to head setting up the finale today with Masahiro Tanaka and Anibal Sanchez going head to head. The game will be played at 1:08 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network, MLB Network and MLB TV.

  • Tanaka turned back the clock a little bit in his last start and looked a lot like the Tanaka the Yankees signed for seven years and less like the Tanaka who was struggling with confidence and a torn ligament in his elbow. Tanaka allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings to the Tampa Bay Rays while striking out eight and walking none in the victory for the Yankees. Tanaka has never faced the Detroit Tigers in his career.

  • Sanchez is coming off a start in which the Chicago White Sox lit him up for nine runs in 3.1 innings in a loss for Detroit. Sanchez has allowed five home runs this season already which is one more than the four he allowed all of the 2014 season. Sanchez comes into the start with a  1-2 record and a 7.71 ERA in 2015.

The Yankees have played well against Detroit this series and are possibly one line drive ground ball off the glove of Didi Gregorius away from another victory over the Tigers. New York will return home after the series for an extended home stand that includes series with the New York Mets and the Tampa Bay Rays. Let’s win this game and let’s get the heck out of Hockey Town, shall we? Go Yankees!
