TGP Trivia and Fact of the Day for March 2nd, 2019

Good morning Yankees family and Happy Saturday to you all. It's the weekend, we made it.

Japan's Masahiro Tanaka, Taiwan's Chien-Ming Wang and Cuba's Orlando Hernandez are the only foreign-born pitchers to start for the Yankees on Opening Day. Tanaka is the only one to make more than one start in an opener.

And a special good morning to my beautiful wife, Kari. I am sorry you have to work again this morning, but remember... you run on accounting, caffeine, and "cuss" words. I love you, hurry home to me!

Dismissing Arbitration, Everybody Wins...

Severino Signs 4-Year Extension w/One-Year Club Option…

It took until the final day of MLB arbitration hearings and the day Luis Severino was scheduled to debate his worth in front of a mediator but the Yankees did the right thing securing a four-year extension and club option for a fifth year with the very talented right-hander. The money reportedly is $40 million with the potential  for $12.25 million more if the club exercises the option.

    • 2019: $4 million plus $2 million signing bonus for $6 million total
    • 2020: $10 million
    • 2021: $10.25 million
    • 2022: $11 million
    • 2023: $15 million if option exercised by club or $2.75 million buyout

I feel it is a very good deal for the Yankees and it provides certainty and financial security for Severino and his family even if he could have gotten more by going to arbitration every off-season until his free agent year. While many defend the arbitration process, I view it as the unfortunate opportunity to sit in a room while your employer basically tells you, “You suck!”. Not literally, but the employer is trying to show why the player is not worth the amount of money he is requesting so negatives are embellished to help build their case for the lower club-offered salary.

Cleveland Indians Trevor Bauer won his arbitration case earlier in the week but he described it as a “character assassination”. It seems to me the negativity stemming from the arbitration hearing will have residual impact on the player. I’ve heard people say they (the players) get over it. Maybe some do but we’re all human and it probably affects everyone differently. It’s hard not to forget criticism (justified or not). Regardless of how Sevy may have dealt with it, I am glad that he didn’t get to that point. He’s young and he is the team’s ace. We need to do everything possible to build him up, not tear him down. The extension buys peace of mind for Sevy and that’s invaluable.

The urgency now moves to the primary three pending free agents: Aaron Hicks, Dellin Betances, and Didi Gregorius. I don’t really want to lose any of these guys.  I’d prefer to see the Yankees lock them up on extensions before they ever hit the open market. That’s probably wishful thinking on my part but I am hopeful. With Hicks, I’d probably feel better if Estevan Florial was closer to The Show but he’s still a couple of seasons away so the Yankees cannot afford to lose their current starting centerfielder. The Yankees obviously have other elite arms in the bullpen but losing Betances would still hurt. Didi, to me, is part of the heart of this team with the talent to match. He’s my shortstop and I want it to stay that way. Sorry Tulo.

CC Sabathia will be holding a press conference today to formally announce his retirement at the end of the season. I guess I hadn’t really thought about it until someone mentioned it recently but CC is a Hall of Famer. In my mind, with no offense and regardless of whether or not you agree, he is a better pitcher than recently selected HOF-er Mike Mussina. Entering the year, he is 246-153 in 538 starts covering 3,470 innings. His K/9 is 7.67 and BB/9 is 2.75.  His career ERA is 3.70 with 67.8 WAR per FanGraphs. He currently sits at 2,986 strikeouts so he’ll notch a very significant milestone early in the season. His number 52 should be retired with a plaque in Monument Park when his playing days are finished. I am hopeful the Yankees find a way to keep Sabathia part of the organization when he hangs up his jersey. He’s been a great Yankee. It would be incredible for him to begin AND end his Yankees career with World Series championships. For his sake (and ours too), I hope it happens.

Congratulations to Dellin Betances and his wife, Janisa, on the birth of their son, Dellin Jr, this week (Wednesday). “With their first pick of the 2037 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees select…” The boy is certainly getting tremendous genes to start his life’s journey. Dellin is scheduled to arrive in Camp on Monday for the team’s first full team workout.

Susan Slusser, a long-time and very respected beat writer for the Oakland A’s, caused a stir on Twitter yesterday when she reported that Chien-Ming Wang had a minor leg strain and would not be throwing today. After an avalanche of ‘what?’ from many people, Slusser acknowledged that she meant Wei-Chung Wang, a non-roster invitee in camp for the A’s. The 38-year-old former Yankee is not attempting a comeback, to the best of my knowledge, but it was funny to see his name in strong circulation yesterday. Wang was featured in a 2018 documentary called Late Life: The Chien-Ming Wang Story. I know I’ve never been a fan of pitchers hitting since Wang suffered the torn Lisfranc ligament in his right foot while running the bases against the Houston Astros during the 2008 season. I’ve always wondered what could have been if Wang had not suffered that freak injury.

I love the story of Yankees hopeful Danny Farquhar. While I do not currently see a spot in the Yankees bullpen for Farquhar, it’s easy to root for a guy who had a life-threatening brain hemorrhage last summer yet has battled his way back to Major League Camp with Baseball’s greatest team. He is very appreciative of the opportunity with the Yankees and it shows. Barring injuries, it seems most likely that he’ll go to Triple A for depth or open eyes for another MLB team. Regardless of what happens, I wish him the best for much success in his journey back to the Major Leagues.

The first exhibition game is a week from today. While the sights and sounds of the practice fields around Steinbrenner Field have been great, I am ready to see the guys playing some actual baseball. Of course, the starters will be guys like Matt Lipka but it will be fun to see the Yankees on the field against the hated Boston Red Sox at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, FL. Hopefully this is the year the Yankees end the Red Sox season prematurely.

Steinbrenner Field will be buzzing tomorrow with the formal arrival of position players in camp. Up to this point, the players in Tampa have had to work out at the minor league facilities so it will be good to see everybody together again. Nothing like an Aaron Judge smile to brighten the World. On a side note, it was so awesome yesterday to see Gleyber Torres greeting pitchers and catchers after the completion of their workouts. I am so excited to see what the new season has in store for Gleyber. Whether he is at second base or shortstop, he’s such a vital cog to the success of this team. He truly embodies the spirit of “there is no ‘I’ in team” and is becoming one of its leaders despite his youth.

As always, Go Yankees!

This Day in New York Yankees History 12/22: Javier Vazquez... Again

On this day in 2009 the World Series champions acquired Javier Vazquez from the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Melky Cabrera. The last time we saw Vazquez in Yankees pinstripes he was giving up that grand slam to Boston Red Sox Johnny Damon in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS.

Also on this day in 2008 the New York Yankees signed Chien Ming Wang to a one year deal worth $5 million to avoid arbitration. The 28 year old right hander had missed half the season after an injury running the bases in Houston ended his season.

Finally on this day in 1982 Lee Mazzilli was traded for the third time this season as the Yankees trade the first basemen and outfielder to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Tim Burke and three minor league players. Mazzilli was acquired in New York that August for Bucky Dent from the Texas Rangers.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Miami Marlins 6/15

Tonight in Marlins Park the New York Yankees and the Miami Marlins start a four game series with the first two games coming in Miami and the last two games coming in the Bronx and inside Yankee Stadium. Tonight the Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound to face off with the Marlins starter TBA. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV.

  • Tanaka has made two starts since coming off the disabled list and has looked great in both starts against the Seattle Mariners and the Washington Nationals. In both contests Tanaka allowed just one run in seven innings including 15 strikeouts and zero walks combined in both starts.

  • TBA

Am I the only one that is a tad bit concerned with Tanaka having to take at bats tonight in the National League park? Eovaldi starts tomorrow and has experience as a former member of the Marlins but anytime a big time Yankees starter has to hit in Interleague Play I immediately think to Chien-Ming Wang. Maybe I'm just a worrier by nature. Go Yankees!

The Atlanta Braves are Stockpiling Former Yankees Prospects

When the Yankees parted ways with former scout Gordon Blakely this offseason there wasn't much press about it. When I did a search on the blog to see if I even wrote about it I found just one article, not the article stating that he left but an article where I just lumped it into the Trey Hillman Hired by Houston article. This was not on anyone's radar but after an offseason where the Braves cherry picked and picked off many former Yankees prospects maybe it should be on our radar now.

Many former Yankees including Manny Banuelos, Chien-Ming Wang, Zoilo Almonte, Corban Joseph, Francisco Rondon, Jairo Heredia, Eury Perez and Jose Veras among others are currently in Atlanta Braves spring training camp. While there aren't any All Stars on this list and while I acknowledge that all of them but Banuelos were acquired because they were allowed to be free agents for good reason this may be the beginning of a trend in Atlanta.

Blakely was the man who signed Robinson Cano. What that means now doesn't mean what it mean't back about 10 years ago but I think the former Yankees scout is trying to find lightning in a bottle again at the Yankees expense. If any team can take a reclamation project and turn them into a serviceable MLB piece it's the Atlanta Braves so remember that list above. You may be seeing their names soon.

Yankees Bring Back Prospects, Lose Prospects

Just a quick catch me up regarding what the Yankees are doing down on their farm system this offseason.

 - New York has re-signed minor league free agent Ali Castillo for at least one more season. Castillo has been playing shortstop in Double-A Trenton and has been lighting up the ball in Winter Ball this season.

 - Fellow shortstop Walter Ibarra left the Yankees and has signed on with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a minor league deal. Yeah, like they need more shortstops.

 - Zoilo Almonte has signed a major league deal with the Atlanta Braves. World War Z is local for me now. Chien Ming Wang will be joining him in Atlanta on a minor league deal.

 - Russ Canzler has been in the Yankees system for two straight seasons but now finds himself with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Quick Hit: Remembering Chien-Ming Wang

With the Yankees pitchers actually taking at bats for the first time this season this is no better of a time then to remember Chien-Ming Wang. Wang won 19 games in consecutive seasons for New York and was well on his way to the mark a third time when he tore his Lisfranc ligament. Wang was running the bases while playing in Houston, they were in the National League then for those new to the sport, when he tore the ligament that has basically ended his career.

Wang was never the same and Yankees owner George Steinbrenner lashed out at the league telling the National League to "join the modern age." I said all that to say this, be careful out there Yankees pitchers. We don't need you getting injured because the National League sucks.

All Home Grown Yankees Team - The Starting Rotation

We thought it would be fun to take a look at a hypothetical all Yankees home grown team using prospects that have come through the Yankees system. Just as a reminder we are only going to use players from the last 20 years or so for the sole purpose of including the dynasty years and cour four. We tried to stay away from guys that spent most of their minor league careers elsewhere only to come to New York later, for example Jose Quintana and Jose Veras who come to mind automatically, so keep that in mind as well before jumping up and down saying we snubbed somebody.

Today we will look at the starting pitchers:

SP: Andy Pettitte
SP: Phil Hughes
SP: Ivan Nova
SP: Chien Ming Wang
SP: Ian Kennedy

Andy Pettitte is Andy Pettitte, that is really all that needs to be said. Over 250 wins in his career and retired sitting at the top of most of the Yankees all time pitching records. Andy came out of the Yankees system in 1995 and made an immediate impact on the team as part of three World Series Championships in the 90's. Andy would also get a ring in the year 2000 and 2009 before retiring as a Yankee for the second time in 2014.

Phil Hughes probably shows the weakness of Yankees home grown pitching in the last 20 seasons because he has struggled mightily. Hughes did have a 18 win season in 2010 though and had a few memorable moments including a perfect game run that fell short in Texas. Hughes Yankees career is all but over after a struggle of a 2013 season.

Ivan Nova has been a roller coaster of a pitcher for the Yankees since coming through the system including being lost to the Rule 5 draft only to be returned by the San Diego Padres. Nova threw his first two complete game shut outs this season and was absolutely lights out for most of the season after an injury sent him down to AAA to work on things.

Chien Ming Wang burst onto the scene as a part of the Yankees youth movement during the 2005 season and responded extremely well. Wang won 19 games in consecutive seasons and was well on his way a third time before a base running blunder basically ended his career in Houston.

Ian Kennedy was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks as a part of the Curtis Granderson deal after flying through the Yankees system after being drafted in the 2006 draft. Kennedy was on the 2009 Yankees World Series team although he was not on the playoff roster. Kennedy would have a 21 win season in 2011 for the Arizona Diamondbacks before being traded to the San Diego Padres this season.

Former Yankees Update Chien Ming Wang

The Yankees signed Chien Ming Wang to a minor league deal before the season and watched him dominate AAA hitters all season long while he spent time with the Scranton Wilkes Barre Railriders. Wang opted out of his deal to sign a major league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays last month and has not seen his 2006 success come back. Wang was designated for assignment last night by the Blue Jays after a terrible start, his second consecutive bomb, against the Detroit Tigers. Wang finished his Blue Jays career with a 7.13 ERA and a 5.31 FIP. He did get ground balls at a career high of right at 63% but that was the only bright spot in what was a disaster for Wang. Will the Yankees bring him back? I would not be against it personally.

Former Yankees Update Chien Ming Wang

Chien Ming Wang was released from his minor league deal with the Yankees last week so he could sign a one year major league deal with our division rival the Toronto Blue Jays. Tonight Wang will make his first start for the Jays against the Chicago White Sox. Wang was 4-4 with a 2.33 ERA in nine starts for the Yankees AAA team before leaving for north of the border. Good luck to Wang tonight and hopefully he gets back on his feet and sticks in the majors.

Yankees Release Wang

It was inevitable, as he was pretty far down on the starting pitching depth chart, but Chien-Ming Wang has been granted his release after exercising an opt-out clause in his contract.

It was reported last week that six clubs were interested in CMW, however Wang was looking for a Major League contract and apparently none of those teams were willing to go there with him at the time. I don't know if things have changed on that front, but it was only a matter of time before a team would need another starter.

Wang started 9 games for a total of 58 innings with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and had an ERA of 2.33.

EDIT: Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Wang will sign with the Blue Jays, and join their rotation next week.

Wang Named International League Pitcher Of The Week

Chien Ming Wang has been named the International League Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 without allowing a run in 14 innings. Wang has a batting average against of a minuscule .167 average last week as well to win the honor.

Chien-Ming Wang Stays With The Yankees

Chien Ming Wang had multiple opt out clauses written into his minor league deal that he signed before the 2013 season and the date of one of them was yesterday. Wang has decided to remain with the Yankees even though six teams, including the Baltimore Orioles are reportedly interested in the right hander. Wang said he would only opt out if he could get a major league deal and obviously none of the six teams were willing to hand him a big league contract. Wang has put up a 2.65 ERA with a 4.1 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 in 51 innings for the Scranton Wilkes Barre Railriders.

Yankees Wang Or Wang-less Today?

The Yankees signed former Yankee Chien Ming Wang to a minor league deal this off season with a multitude of opt out dates written into the contract. One of those dates is today, 5/30, so Wang has a decision to make today. Will Wang opt out and become a free agent or will he remain with the Yankees?

My personal opinion on the matter is I cannot see Wang leaving the Yankees just yet. Teams are not quite ready to commit or sell off this early in the season and I find it hard to see Wang getting a major league deal just yet. If this was the end of June and not the end of May and the pretenders and the contenders were more clear than I could totally see Wang opting out but not yet. Although he has pitched well enough to get a shot and has been passed over by the Vidal Nuno's, Adam Warren's, and David Phelps of the world so who knows. Personally I think it is just a bit premature for Wang... yeah I wen't there... to leave the team. He has pitched well but as a minor leaguer you have to pitch well enough to MAKE the Yankees bring you up and he just has not done that this season.

We will re-visit this next month so stay tuned for the latest Wang updates.

Ivan Nova Triceps Injury Update

Ivan Nova played catch for the first time since his triceps inflammation that landed him on the disabled list last week. Nova still feels some tightness in the triceps but does not feel pain so I guess that can be considered as progress. The Yankees need Ivan Nova healthy right now and with all the reinforcements on the way, including Chien Ming Wang and Michael Pineda, Nova needs to get back on the mound to save his job.

Wang Decides To Stay W/ Yankees

Chien Ming Wang has a few opt out clauses in his minor league contract that he signed with the Yankees this spring with the first date that he could opt out being yesterday but Wang has decided to stay with the Yankees. The dates included in the contract are April 30th, May 31st, June 30th, August 10th, and August 31st. The Yankees now have another month before they have to worry about another team offering him a starting spot in their big league rotation so they have a little bit of time. Wang has pitched well in AAA for the Scranton team putting up a 0.95 ERA in 19 IP with a ground ball rate nearing 60% with that sinker of his. Wang is in his age 33 season and could be a welcomed addition to the Yankees rotation instead of letting Adam Warren rot in the bullpen but hey what do I know.
