The Yankees and the 2020 MLB Schedule

Image may contain: 1 person, baseball and text
Graphic incorrectly says "NL West" It should say NL East*
The 2020 season for Major League Baseball is happening, at least where we stand here today at the end of June. What a year it's been, but the return of baseball (at least to me) means so much more than just a return to normalcy. To me, it's a return to everything.

While the entire 2020 schedule has not been released as of yet, we do know that the Yankees will be inside Nationals Park facing off against Max Scherzer and the defending MLB World Series Champions on July 23rd. Once the MLB odds are released, we will be able to see what the point-spread is. The presumed starting pitching matchup on that night will be Gerrit Cole, who will finally be making his Yankees debut after signing a 9-year deal worth $324 million, against Scherzer.

What we do know thus far is that the Yankees will play 10 games each against each of their AL East rivals, as well as a total of 20 games against National League East teams as well. In some capacity, the Yankees will play 10 games each against the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays. New York will also play three games each with the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies, while playing four games against the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins. In a bit of a twist, MLB has decided to allow teams to play their "rivals" from their opposing division an extra two times, so the New York Yankees and New York Mets will play a total of six times head-to-head in 2020.

Check back in a few days after the full schedule is out.

Hello… Off Day

Good morning everyone and welcome to another off day for the New York Yankees. Enjoy them while we can, ladies and gents, because between Mother Nature and the MLB schedule makers there won’t be very many more off days for the team going forward. Rest up, we will need it come September and October.

And my Kari, every day I will spend with you. Work days. Off days. Busy days. Lackadaisical days. Every day, and all days. I love you.

Quick Hit: 2018 MLB Schedule Released

Yes, yes I know this is a couple days old by now but I was busy away at a wedding out of town this weekend and I am just now getting caught up. Major League Baseball has released their tentative schedule for the 2018 season so I thought I would bring it to you in its entirety this afternoon. Major League Baseball will host Opening Day on its earliest day ever, March 29 while the regular season is slated to end on September 30 of 2018. The reason for the early start is due to the new collective bargaining agreement which gives the MLB players three additional off days throughout the season while also meaning October baseball will be playoff baseball only here next season. Here are a few other notable dates and games for you if you don’t want to skim through the schedule.

All 30 teams will be in action on Opening Day for the first time since the 1968 season.

The AL East will play the NL East in Interleague play while the AL and NL Central and West Division will each face off head-to-head in 2018.

The 2018 MLB All Star Game will be held on July 17th inside Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals.

The Yankees first 13 games are within the American League East Division.

The first interleague game for New York is April 16 and 17 inside Yankee Stadium against the Miami Marlins. The first game here the Yankees pitchers will have to hit inside a National League Park is May 15 and 16 when the Yankees travel to Nationals Park to take on the Washington Nationals.

The Yankees first West Coast road trip is against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim April 27 – 29.

There will be six games this season within the annual Subway Series with the first three coming June 8 – 10 inside Citi Field. The three games inside Yankee Stadium will be hosted on July 20 – 22.

The Yankees and the Braves, because I live in Metro-Atlanta, square off in the Bronx from July 2 – 4 and the team will not make the trip down to Atlanta in 2018. What a bummer.

MLB Playoff Schedule for 10/14/16

Good morning ladies and gentleman and happy Friday to you all. We made it and in a few short (long) hours it will be the weekend for most of us and it will also be the beginning of the American League Championship Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cleveland Indians. They take center stage tonight as the only game on the schedule. Good luck to both teams, just a little bit of extra luck to the Indians who did not help end the Yankees season in 2016. Yeah, a little spiteful.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Cleveland Indians (Game 1) – 8:08 pm ET on TBS

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Rays 9/22

The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays will finish off their series today with the finale of their three-game set inside Tropicana Field. The Yankees lost much of what they were fighting for this season in that Boston series over the weekend taking much of the wind out of the sails for the Rays who looked to be spoilers for the remainder of the season. The Yankees kept fighting despite that tough series and Boston and will presumably keep fighting until Rob Manfred and the MLB schedule makers tell them to go home for the long winter ahead. That includes today’s contest which will showcase Luis Cessa taking the mound for the Yankees against Blake Snell for the Rays.

Cessa has taken the loss in each of his last two starts after not notching a loss as a starter for the entire season prior but the Yankees right-hander pitched well enough to win in both of those statistical losses. The last time the Rays faced Cessa they tee’d off on him for three home runs giving him his first loss of his Major League career on September 11th so hopefully Cessa made the adjustments necessary before tonight’s rematch.

Snell hasn’t been especially sharp in his last five starts and has not seen the sixth inning in four of those five starts including his last start against the Baltimore Orioles. In that start Snell lasted just 4.1 innings and is due in large part to a struggle to find the strike zone in recent starts.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Tropicana Field and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11 and MLB TV. This will be the final time the Yankees see Tampa Bay this season and if they want to look for a reason why they aren’t making the postseason in 2016 they don’t have to look any farther than the Rays. The Rays are a last place team, now granted they aren’t your typical last place team that you can beat up on with Alex Cobb back and Chris Archer still a good pitcher despite pushing for 20 losses this season, and playoffs teams beat the teams they are supposed to beat. The Yankees are supposed to beat the Rays and they didn’t and that’s a huge reason why they aren’t heading to the postseason this season. Right a wrong, beat the Rays. Go Yankees!

Highlights from the 2017 Yankees Schedule

The New York Yankees announced their tentative 2017 schedule this week and it’s time to start making plans. See the Yankees are going for it, presumably anyway, in 2017 and will have a young and exciting roster to check out so here are a few highlights for the 2017 regular season that I feel like you must see if you’re a Yankees fan. Don’t look too far ahead though, we still have a lot of work to do here yet in 2016. Enjoy.

The Yankees will end Spring Training 2017 with an exhibition game with the Atlanta Braves in their newly built SunTrust Park. I’m not sure, and won’t be until around January or February, whether the Yankees will play any other exhibition games with either MLB teams or college teams towards the end of spring training though so you will have to stay tuned for that. The game on March 31, 2017 is confirmed to be happening though down in Atlanta.

Opening Day for the Yankees is on Sunday, April 2nd down in Tampa, Florida as New York takes on the Tampa Bay Rays. You have to think that’s a Masahiro Tanaka vs. Chris Archer kind of afternoon inside Tropicana Field. The Yankees will play three games in Tampa and three games in Baltimore against the Orioles before welcoming the Tampa bay Rays to the Bronx for their home opener on Monday, April 10.

The Yankees and Mets play their split Subway Series again in 2017 with two games coming in Queens and two games coming in the Bronx on August 14 – August 17th while New York also faces off with the National League Central in Interleague Play. That includes series with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds at home while the team makes the trip to PNC Park to face the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wrigley Field to face the Chicago Cubs and the Great American Ballpark to hit home runs against the Cincinnati Reds.

2017 should be another fun season full of great series matchups, historic teams facing off head-to-head and I’m sure there will be a firework or two to be shot off. I’m not looking ahead whatsoever but I still can’t wait for next season. I mean, come on. The Yankees inside Wrigley Field? The St. Louis Cardinals inside Yankee Stadium? The Yankees down in Atlanta, even for an exhibition game, when I’m a Yankees fan displaced in Atlanta? What’s not to love?

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 8/21

The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will finish off their three game set this afternoon with a game that us on the East Coast can actually watch without staying up  half the damn night. I have a serious beef with West Coast games and MLB schedule makers, I just wanted to make sure that came through in some of my blog posts here. There's no reason a Saturday game cannot be played in the afternoon like today's afternoon game but I digress. In the finale of the series the Yankees will send Chad Green to the mound looking for a repeat of his last start while the Angels will counter with Jhoulys Chacin.

Green was absolutely stellar in his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays as he led the Yankees with six shut-out innings against a tough offense. Green had a perfect game heading into the fifth inning and struck out 11 in the Yankees only victory of the series.

Chacin has only been back in the Yankees rotation for two starts now and with any player who was removed from the rotation the expected lack of stamina has hit Chacin hard. Chacin has only been able to give the Angels six innings combined in two starts and last faced the Yankees in June, a start that resulted in five runs allowed, seven hits and a loss for Los Angeles.

The game will be played at 3:35 pm ET inside Angels Stadium of Anaheim and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. Let's crush these geographically confused group of 25 MLB ball players and let's get traveling to the rainiest place in the continental United States, shall we? Go Yankees!

Yankees Second Half Schedule Allows for “Declaration”

Ladies and gentleman, good morning and Happy Friday. The All-Star break is officially in the books and it is back to business tonight as Major League Baseball kicks off their second half. For much of the month of July all talk around the league will be centered around buyers, sellers and the August 1st trading deadline. According to Yankees officials the team has not yet “declared” themselves and many in the organization are split as to whether the team should buy or sell before the deadline. Brian Cashman has gone on record as willing to sell but Randy Levine and Hal Steinbrenner pity the fool who thinks New York is anything less than a World Series caliber team. Thankfully for the Yankees organization the team’s second half second has all the makings and potential to allow for such “declarations” to be made about the team and their chances in 2016.

The Yankees begin a three game set tonight with the Boston Red Sox in the Bronx before hosting the Baltimore Orioles for four and the San Francisco Giants for three. The team will then travel to Houston to face off with the Astros three times before getting a break (on paper) in Tampa with the Tampa Bay Rays in a three game set. After the Tampa Bay series it’s back to New York for the Yankees but not to play in the Bronx but to play in Queens and inside CitiField against the New York Mets for two. New York will then host those same Mets for two before welcoming the first place Cleveland Indians back to town for a pivotal three-game set that stretches into the month of August.

The Yankees will play seven teams throughout the month of July and into the first week of August and those seven teams have a combined record of 338- 269. All these teams are above .500 with the exception of the last place Tampa Bay Rays (which it is worth mentioning that Tampa could be 0-159 and still play their best ball against New York those final three games of the season). New York may have the toughest schedule of any team during the month of July and into August and that could result in a lot of losses. A lot of them. This team could potentially lose every single series this month. Seriously.

So if Cashman and company need it written in crayon before they can decide to buy or sell they may get just that and more this month on the field. This team did not take advantage of a lull in the schedule and they will likely pay for it this month. Here’s to hoping.

One More Day Until Baseball Open Thread

Ladies and gentleman baseball returns to the Bronx this time tomorrow night as the New York Yankees play host to the Boston Red Sox. I hope the team has recharged the batteries, worked on some things, healed some nagging injuries and are prepared mentally to focus because tomorrow night begins a tough stretch for the Yankees in the schedule with games with the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants to name a few. If the team needs to “declare” themselves to Brian Cashman this should be the stretch that does it either way in my opinion.

Anyway we’ll worry about that tomorrow night, tonight we chill and catch Pokemon. Enjoy the final off night of the All Star break and prepare for the second half push that comes right around every trading deadline every season. This is about to get interesting I think. Have a great night everyone.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ San Diego Padres 7/2

Why can’t the MLB schedulers get this thing right? Why can’t they meet in the middle, especially on Saturday’s, and play the West Coast games at 1:05 pm locally or even 4:05 pm locally? Who wants to spend their Saturday nights staying up until 1:00 am ET or even 2:00 am ET watching the Yankees? Now in my younger days, before I had kids that woke up at 6:00 am no matter what, that wasn’t a big issue but now it is. Maybe I’ll bring this up next time Commissioner Rob Manfred is in town and wants to take me to lunch. I digress though as we have a game to preview between the New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres. In the middle game of this three-game weekend set the Yankees will send Ivan Nova to the mound to face off with the Padres starter Drew Pomeranz.

Nova struggled for much of the month of June but it's July now and it's also Interleague play, something Nova has dominated during his career. In 15 games, 14 of them starts, Nova has posted a 2.88 ERA against the National League and that includes one dominant start against the Padres back in 2013.

Pomeranz's name has already been thrown around a few living rooms this season but for two totally different reasons. One circle is discussing whether Pomeranz will be an All-Star representative this season after a strong first half while the other is discussing who the Padres will trade him to.

The game will be played at 10:10 pm ET inside Petco Park and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. It just won’t be seen by me, not in its entirety anyway. I’ll do the best I can to follow along and entertain you on Twitter but I make no promises. Hopefully the Yankees can make that same statement as they pull out a win against a team they are supposed to beat up on. Go Yankees!

Yankee Stadium Off Day Walk Up Music Recommendation

Another day and another off day for the New York Yankees. I’m sure the team isn’t complaining much after playing in 40 games in 41 days but I know the fans can sometimes get a little impatient with two days off in a week. Nothing we can do about that though, that’s fully in the MLB scheduler’s hands, but we can enjoy the day, get that project done we’ve been meaning to get done and recharge the batteries both physically and mentally.

Like we do with every off day we bring to you today the walk up or entrance music for one of the Yankees players or stars and today that star is Aroldis Chapman. After hearing Enter Sandman for so many years at the beginning of every 9th inning in the Bronx we’ve been given a variety of music to enjoy over the years with the latest being “Wake Up” by Rage Against the Machine.

Enjoy the song and enjoy the off day. New York welcomes Minnesota to the Bronx tomorrow for a three-game weekend set inside Yankee Stadium. It should be fun.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles 6/5

The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles played into the night last night and with a day game today I expect to see a lot of the Yankees regulars on the bench this afternoon. The Yankees are in the middle of a 40 games in 41 days stretch and manager Joe Girardi is all about giving his players "a day." One man who will not get a day today is CC Sabathia who the Yankees send to the mound to face off against Kevin Gausman in the contest.

Sabathia has pitched well enough to take the home the victory in each of his last two starts yet the Yankees offense has not been able to pick up the big lefty. Sabathia has posted a 1.04 ERA in his last two starts while allowing just three earned runs in his last four appearances yet the veteran is just 3-4 with a 2.85 ERA this season.

Gausman has been giving up too many damn home runs in his last couple starts, he gave up three in each of his last two starts, which is a great sign for a team that hits a lot of home runs historically. The Yankees need a shot in the arm offensively and Gausman may give it to them although he has been traditionally tough against them throughout his career.

The game will be played at 1:35 pm ET inside Oriole Park and Camden Yards and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. The Yankees have to be looking forward to sleeping in their own beds and traveling back to the Bronx after this contest but hopefully it doesn't translate into their on the field play today. Get a win and go home. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays 5/26

The New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays are set to finish off their three game series this week in the Bronx with a pretty rare start time. This afternoon the game will begin at 4:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium which is a change of pace for both teams. The pitchers who will need to adjust to the early, or late depending on how you look at it, start time will be CC Sabathia for the Yankees and JA Happ for the Blue Jays. Well I’ll have to adjust to it as well since I don’t get off work for another 30 minutes and then I have to drive home thus missing a big chunk of this contest unfortunately. Damn you MLB schedule makers!

The Yankees head south to Tampa Bay to take on the Tampa Bay Rays for the next three games before heading to visit our neighbors from the north in Toronto to begin another week of fun for the Yankees. This gives you plenty of time to click the Yankees tickets link at the top of the blog and plenty of time to snag a pair of seats for when the team returns home to the Bronx. Until then head over to Twitter and give @GreedyStripes a follow to interact with us during the game and the entire season and you may even find yourself in a Twitter Poll or two like we had this morning.

Don’t let Happ hit you in the hand/arm with a pitch, get out alive and get out of the Bronx with another big series win. Go Yankees!

After posting a 41-34 regular season record and winning the team's eighth McNamara Division title in 16 seasons, Staten Island seeks to bring home their seventh New York-Penn League Championship in 2016 following a loss in the league championship in September.

For the first time since 2012, the Yankees will open the season on the road on Friday, June 17, at the friendly confines of MCU Park in Brooklyn where the Baby Bombers posted a perfect 6-0 record in 2015. The team then returns to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George to begin a home-opening seven-game home stand from June 18 to June 24, including a NYPL Championship rematch with reigning title holder the West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates) on June 22-24.

While fans will have to wait until early 2016 for the promotional calendar, dates such as July 4 vs. the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Rays) and the Labor Day season finale on Sept. 5 vs. Brooklyn should be games to mark in your calendar. See below for the whole 2016 home slate.

It All Comes Down to This...

This is the final off day of the regular season. No more rest until October 5th, no more getting them next time and no more taking their foot off the accelerator. It all comes down to this for the New York Yankees as the team continues their march towards the postseason. The chase for the American League East Division is far from over with three more head-to-head matchups with the Toronto Blue Jays, although lately they have shown to be the superior team, and the team remains in the driver's seat for at least one of the American League Wild Card slots. The season is no longer a marathon and it's not even a sprint, it's more of a run for your life from the herd of flesh eating zombies that are looking to end your life.

The Yankees remaining schedule includes a pair of three game series against the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays, both likely playoff teams, before returning home for a pair of four-game series with the Chicago White Sox and the Boston Red Sox, both of which will likely be officially eliminated by then. The final three games of the season will be back out on the road inside Camden Yards when the Yankees face off with the Baltimore Orioles. Buck Showalter loves to stick it to the Yankees anytime he can so if these games are meaningful for New York you can expect Baltimore to bring their "A" games in those final three games.

Just in case you were wondering here is the Blue Jays remaining 2015 schedule.. spoiler alert, it's pretty soft with multiple games against the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.
