Quick Hit: 2018 MLB Schedule Released

Yes, yes I know this is a couple days old by now but I was busy away at a wedding out of town this weekend and I am just now getting caught up. Major League Baseball has released their tentative schedule for the 2018 season so I thought I would bring it to you in its entirety this afternoon. Major League Baseball will host Opening Day on its earliest day ever, March 29 while the regular season is slated to end on September 30 of 2018. The reason for the early start is due to the new collective bargaining agreement which gives the MLB players three additional off days throughout the season while also meaning October baseball will be playoff baseball only here next season. Here are a few other notable dates and games for you if you don’t want to skim through the schedule.

All 30 teams will be in action on Opening Day for the first time since the 1968 season.

The AL East will play the NL East in Interleague play while the AL and NL Central and West Division will each face off head-to-head in 2018.

The 2018 MLB All Star Game will be held on July 17th inside Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals.

The Yankees first 13 games are within the American League East Division.

The first interleague game for New York is April 16 and 17 inside Yankee Stadium against the Miami Marlins. The first game here the Yankees pitchers will have to hit inside a National League Park is May 15 and 16 when the Yankees travel to Nationals Park to take on the Washington Nationals.

The Yankees first West Coast road trip is against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim April 27 – 29.

There will be six games this season within the annual Subway Series with the first three coming June 8 – 10 inside Citi Field. The three games inside Yankee Stadium will be hosted on July 20 – 22.

The Yankees and the Braves, because I live in Metro-Atlanta, square off in the Bronx from July 2 – 4 and the team will not make the trip down to Atlanta in 2018. What a bummer.

Game Preview: New York Yankees “@” Tampa Bay Rays 9/12

The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays continue to dodge Hurricane Irma and continue their series home away from home inside Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. In this second game of this three-game set the Yankees will send Sonny Gray to the mound looking to take the Yankees one step closer to the postseason while the Rays with their backs against the playoff wall send Blake Snell to the mound looking to prolong the season just a little longer. This is September baseball ladies and gentleman and it’s only going to get better from here.

Gray pitched well in his last time out against the Baltimore Orioles holding the Fighting Showalters scoreless for the first time as a Yankee. This game also marked just the second time in his Yankees tenure that Gray held a team to two runs or less in a start.

Snell on the other hand didn’t pitch as well as he had presumably hoped to against the Minnesota Twins in a no-decision. Snell lasted just four innings in the start snapping a career-long streak of five straight starts of 6 innings pitched or longer. No need to start that streak over again tonight, we won’t mind a bit.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Citi Field and can be seen on YES Network, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into the WFAN broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Also, just as a reminder, the Tampa Bay Rays are considered the home team here this week in Queens despite the games being played in New York. It’s uncommon but not unheard of in the history of Major League Baseball, it just sucks because of the circumstances. Either way you should try to enjoy the game because the Yankees need a win, so get a win. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees @ New York Mets 8/17

One last time this season the New York Yankees and the New York Mets will face off head-to-head as a part of the Subway Series. Let’s do it. In the finale of the four-game interleague set tonight the Yankees will send their ace and best pitcher to the mound in Luis Severino while the Mets will counter with the struggling Steven Matz. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Citi Field in Flushing, New York and can be seen on the YES Network, WPIX Channel 11, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along on the radio and in your cars by tuning into WFAN for the Yankees feed and ESPN Deportes for the Mets feed.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ New York Mets 8/17

With a heavy heart I regret to inform you that after tonight the New York Yankees can no longer beat up on the New York Mets in 2017. Well unless both teams make the playoffs and reach the World Series, but lol. In the finale of the four-game annual Subway Series the Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound looking to start a new string of impressive starts while the Mets will counter with Steven Matz, unless he gets injured or traded by then too. Enjoy the game.

Severino was not impressive in his last start against the Boston Red Sox allowing 10 runs, eight of them earned, in just 4.1 innings pitched. Severino was undefeated in his previous four starts allowing no more than one run in any of the starts before the clunker in the Bronx.

Matz has also struggled over his last seven starts posting a 0-5 record with a 9.51 ERA and facing Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez and company is usually not the best recipe to fix that. Matz will be pitching at home tonight which helps but a struggling pitcher may be just what the Yankees offense needs to start clicking on all cylinders again.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Citi Field in Queens and can be seen on the YES Network, WPIX Channel 11, MLB Network and MLB TV. You can also follow along on the radio and in your cars by tuning into WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Enjoy the game, to hell with the Mets and Go Yankees!!!

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ New York Mets 8/16

The New York Yankees and the New York Mets are taking the subway, well probably not but this is the Subway Series so go with it, across town to Queens to continue the Subway Series inside Citi Field, home of the Metropolitans. In the third game of the series and the first inside Citi Field the Yankees will send Jaime Garcia to the mound to make his third start for the Bombers, all three coming on the road FYI, while the Mets will counter with Seth Lugo  Robert Gsellman. Will the pitching hold up tonight or will it continue to be Home Run Derby for these two clubs? Stay tuned to find out.

Garcia was much better in his second start with the Yankees than he was in the first start despite taking a no decision. Garcia allowed three runs in 5.2 innings in his last start narrowly missing a quality start. Garcia hasn’t had much luck against the Mets this season losing to them twice, although his last start against them was with the Atlanta Braves where the lefty gave up just two runs in seven innings in a loss.

Lugo has not been sharp in his last four starts and will face a tough task ahead of him tonight against the potentially explosive New York Yankees offense. In Lugo’s last four starts he has a 6.55 ERA and .329 batting average against which is not what you want if you’re a fan of the New York Mets. Lugo was added to the disabled list and Robert Gsellman will make the start in his place.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Citi Field in Flushing, New York and can be seen on the YES Network, ESPN and MLB TV. You can also follow along in your cars and on the radio by tuning into WFAN with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Go Yankees and to hell with the Mets!!!

I’m Hungry: New Stadium Food at Yankee Stadium

So we covered some stadium food around the league already this winter including the tamale dog that the Texas Rangers organization will be rolling out this season but we have yet to touch on the new dishes that you can enjoy this season at Yankee Stadium. We right that wrong today as we take a look at the new stadium food that you can enjoy all year long in the Bronx. Take a look.

Yankee Stadium is bringing in Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Bareburger and Lobel’s to go along with their six new social gatherings that were renovated into the stadium this winter. Those menus can be found online but they are pretty well known in the area so I doubt you will need to. You know what these big “star” vendors bring to the table each and every day, literally.

New York also has the Yankee Dinger which is basically a grilled slider topped with shaved white onions, pickles, American cheese and yellow mustard on a steamed potato bun as well as their classic French Dip sandwich which consists of shaved prime rib, caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese on a Semolina roll dipped in French onion soup. I just gained three pounds just thinking about that sandwich. If you’re looking for gluten free options you can find those at Melissa’ Farmers Market but my personal preference would be Chinese bao which is filled with pork belly, prime rib or buffalo cauliflower which can be found on the Toyota Terrace. I have a weakness for pork belly.

It’s hard to turn down The Mutz though which is a concession sandwich shop whose specialty sandwich consists of stuffed chunks of mozzarella tossed with mixed vegetables. Because vegetables are good for you and all.

So much good food and so much to see inside Yankee Stadium this season… where to begin?

New York Mets Beat New York Yankees in Television Ratings in 2016

Remember back earlier this offseason when I said the New York Yankees had set a new franchise record? It wasn’t a record you necessarily want to be remembered for, the team went an entire 162 game season without a single complete game from their pitching staff, and this other first to happen this season isn’t necessarily one either. For the first time in the history of these two franchises the New York Mets beat out the New York Yankees in television ratings. First time ever. Let that sink in because the New York Yankees have had some terrible teams.

The New York Mets averaged 263,850 viewers per game this season on the SNY Network while the New York Yankees averaged just 218,000 viewers per game on the YES Network. Now one must keep in mind that the Comcast and YES Network breakup caused an estimated 900,000 homes to be without the YES Network this season but still, this is not a great sign for the future of the Yankees.

The Mets went to the World Series last year while making the postseason this year which helps but I guess people finally got tired of the same old, and I mean old literally and figuratively, team being thrown out there each and every day in Yankee-land. The youth movement should help but it goes to show you that Hal Steinbrenner is going to have to open his purse a little bit or this “first time ever” could become the norm.

NL Wild Card Game Thread: New York Mets vs. San Francisco Giants 10/5

Here we go ladies and gentleman as the National League has their say in the Wild Card round of the 2016 MLB playoffs. Here we are juggernaut is the song listed above this game thread because these two teams and their starting pitchers are absolute juggernauts in the NL. Tonight the hometown New York Mets send Thor, Noah Syndergaard, to the mound to square off with Mr. October around the San Francisco area in Madison Bumgarner. The game will be played at 8:05 pm ET inside Citi Field and can be seen on ESPN.

My prediction is the Giants win 2-0 but if the Mets can get the ball to their closer I may end up with egg on my face at the end of the night. And that would be okay too, I guess that's one of the "perks" to not having a horse in the race. You can enjoy the game for what it is again. Enjoy the game.

NL Wild Card Game Preview: New York Mets vs. San Francisco Giants 10/5

The National League takes center stage tonight as the New York Mets return home to host one playoff game against the San Francisco Giants. Win or go home and one team will do just that after tonight while the other heads to Chicago and Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs. Ladies and gentleman they call that a gift and a curse for the winner but no one is thinking that far ahead tonight as they have to first take care of business tonight inside Citi Field. In the game the New York Mets will send Noah Syndergaard to the mound to square off with the Giants starter Madison Bumgarner in what should be one of the better pitching matchups of the postseason. Let’s get to it.

Snydergaard will start the Wild Card Game for the Mets on seven days of rest which could be a good thing or a bad thing for Terry Collins tonight. The Mets were saving him for the final day of the season if they team needed a victory to get into the postseason after the righty led the Mets starters in ERA and strikeouts while making his case of the NL Cy Young Award.

Bumgarner heads into this start fresh off setting a single-season Giants franchise record for strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher. Bumgarner only faced the Mets once this season and he did so inside Citi Field where the game will take place tonight. In that May 1st start Bumgarner struck out seven while hurling six shutout innings in a win over New York.

The game will be played at 8:05 pm ET inside Citi Field and can be seen nationally on TBS. The playoffs really get kicked off after the AL and NL Wild Card games are over and you know both teams didn’t work this hard just to go home in one-game without a fight. What a game this should be and truth be told I think I am more excited about this one than I was the American League’s Wild Card Game.

Good luck to both teams and enjoy the game.

Which MLB Ball Park Should You Visit?

Let's say you only have time to see one more MLB stadium before you go, which stadium should it be? That's a hard decision to make for some. Sure, you have the stadium of your home team but it's likely that you've been there a few hundred times in a lot of cases. What about a rival's stadium? You may or may not have visited this stadium but do you really want to head into enemy territory for your final stadium visit or ultimate stadium visit? Decisions, decisions, decisions but that's where Fox Sports is here to help.

Fox Sports has developed a quiz that asks a few questions about your ultimate stadium viewing and visiting experience and chooses the stadium that you should cross of your bucket list and head out to visit. To take the quiz CLICK HERE and you can see below for an example of the results as the quiz gave me Yankee Stadium. I kind of thought that was coming by some of the questions asked but I answered honestly anyway and this is what I got. Leave your choice in the comments section below or tweet us them @GreedyStripes.

Yankee

Only the Coliseum in Rome can match the grandiose of Yankee Stadium. It's massive, grand and a tribute to the House That Ruth Built. Though it's not the historic ballpark that sat across the street, it's still a must-see for any baseball fan.

ICYMI: The Greatest Game I Have Ever Been To...

Also by Patrick Hennessy seen HERE:

Last night, August 1st 2016 I was lucky enough to be able to attend the first game of this years Subway series at Citi Field. Let me just start it off with this, it was one of the greatest games I have ever been to live.

The Yankees entered this game by finishing of their selling spree by trading Chapman to the Cubs, Miller to the Indians, Beltran to the Rangers, and Nova to the Pirates. While the Mets entered this game going in a totally opposite direction by buying at the deadline and trading for RBI leader Jay Bruce and former Met Jon Niese. The Yankees entered this game at a .500 record while the Mets entered with a record of 54-50 which isn't much better then the Yanks but it keeps them in the NL playoff hunt.

Now let's get to the game, I have never been to a Yankee-Met game before so it was a very new experience to me despite all of the previous games I have been to including last years AL Wild Card game. It was also my first time at Citi Field and let me say it is a really nice stadium, ton of options for food, and the bullpen gate is something really cool that all fans who go there should check out. I also like how as I entered the stadium they had a separate express lane for people who didn't have bags that needed to be checked which made my process going into the stadium go much quicker. I still don't believe it is better then Yankee Stadium but it was definitley up there.

I sat in the 500 level where I thought that it would be tough to see the field but it was actually a great view for being that high up. As the game started I saw Brett Gardner come up to bat... Next thing I know is that he hit a deep fly ball to center field and Ruggiano had a tough time playing it so Gardner is speeding around the bases and gets thrown out at the plate going for the inside the park HR. It was devastating because I had Mets fans sitting all around me and they were all going nuts while I was just sitting there with my hat down very dissapointment.

The game was then very quiet until the bottom of the 2nd when Mets 3B Wilmer Flores launched a solo home run off of C.C. Sabathia and the only thing that I thought in my head was "This is when Sabathia is going to collapse" and oh boy was I right. Then in the top of the 3rd Refsnyder was on first base and Sabathia dropped one of the worst bunts I have ever seen right back to the pitcher and it winds up becoming a double play.

Then in the top of the 5th the Yankees got things going again, with two outs Gardner doubled to right field with Refsnyder on 2nd which gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Then the next batter Jacoby Ellsbury singled to center which allowed Gardner to score therefore making the score 3-1 Yankees. I was very confident in this lead until I remembered that Sabathia was pitching....Which made me not surprised that in the bottom of the 5th Conforto doubled to deep right field and scored Nimmo making the score 3-2 which involved a Yankees lead that would not last very long.

The very next inning in the bottom of the 6th Sabathia gives up 2 singles and then allows Matt Reynolds launch a 3-run homer off of him to give the Mets a 5-3 lead, at this point I am just dissapointment in the Yankees thinking that they have no shot to come back because this is how the entire season has gone.

Little did I know that they were going to spark a rally in the 8th inning. The inning started with a Gardner walk and then a strikeout from Ellsbury and then another Strikeout from Tex (which should not be a suprise to anybody) Then McCann comes up and singles to right which allows Gardner to move to third. This is where things get interesting... Girardi puts in Torreyes for McCann and he quickly takes 2nd after a ball in the dirt from Addison Reed. And now Didi comes up, our best hitter all season might be able to have his shining moment as a Yankee. After practically a 10 pitch at bat that had me biting my fingernails and the crowd going nuts, Didi bloops it into left field scoring both Gardner and Torreyes. I WAS GOING CRAZY!!!!

Now this is the moment that I wished we still had Miller and Chapman to pitch in this game but we don't so then we have to put in Adam Warren to pitch the bottom of 8th and 9th.

This is when we can move to the top of the 10th inning when it all goes down. It starts with an Ellsbury walk, a Tex single, and then a bunt by Gamel which was perfectly placed so that everybody was able to be safe which led them to bases loaded nobody out for Didi! He struck out swinging.... Then I started losing all faith thinking that they would not score but then Castro hit a deep fly ball to right center and I thought it was gone but Granderson was able to catch it and the Yankees were able to score that one run that inning and I was hoping that it was going to be enough to hold down the Mets.

Betances comes in to close the game and put it to rest... First batter was James Loney and he doubles to deep right field and at this point I was just praying that Betances would not blow this game. Next batter was Reynolds and he bunted back to Betances which brought Loney to third with only one out. Betances then hits De Aza with a pitch which brings up Rivera and all he does is ground out to Betances. This leaves 2nd and 3rd two outs with Granderson up... Everyone at the stadium is on the edge of their seats waiting to see what is going to happen... After a long at bat Betances throws Grandy a nasty curveball and THE YANKEES WIN!!! Part of the crowd was going crazy and the other part looked like they were going to cry.

Bottom line, out of the countless number of games I have been to in my life including playoff games, this was DEFINITLEY the most exciting and most fun I have ever had at a baseball game!

The USA Today Ranks All 30 MLB Stadiums

The USA Today’s Ted Berg did something I wish I could do this week, he ranked all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums in the league. Now sure, I could rank them all day long but he has actually visited all 30 and that is the key component to my jealousy and to what makes this list unique and great. Make sure to visit the link to check out his write up’s on all 30 MLB stadiums and see where he ranks them but for the purposes of this post I will sample the Top 10 stadiums and the write up for good ole’ Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Enjoy.

1.       Petco Park – San Diego Padres
2.       AT&T Park – San Francisco Giants
3.       PNC Park – Pittsburgh Pirates
4.       Wrigley Field – Chicago Cubs
5.       Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles Dodgers
6.       Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City Royals
7.       Coors Field – Colorado Rockies
8.       Fenway Park – Boston Red Sox
9.       Target Field – Minnesota Twins
10.   Citi Field – New York Mets

25. Yankee Stadium – New York Yankees:

Credit the Yankees for eschewing the typical new-old look popular when their stadium opened in 2009, but not for producing a ballpark that looks more like a Las Vegas casino version of a stately building than the actual stately building they intended. The giant videoboard is great and the sight of the 4-train rumbling past is very cool, but the Yankees play within a couple of miles of some of the best Italian food on this great planet and somehow dare to unironically serve Papa John’s Pizza at their ballpark. You have to admire the chutzpah, really. — Ted Berg

Subway Series Game Three Preview: New York Yankees vs. New York Mets 8/3

The New York Yankees and the New York Mets will get on the Subway and make the trip across New York City boroughs to the Bronx as the Subway Series shifts to Yankee Stadium and the home of the Yankees. How awesome is this series no matter how the teams are doing in the overall standings? These games are always well contested and always well played, see Monday night’s game as an example of this as the Yankees come storming back after trading away almost half their roster just hours before, slight exaggeration. Tonight I expect no less of a scrappy and gritty type game as the Yankees send Chad Green to the mound taking Ivan Nova’s rotation spot and turn in the order to face off against the Mets starter Steven Matz.

Green steps back into the Yankees rotation to replace the recently traded Ivan Nova while Luis Severino remains in the bullpen. Questionable move but Green could shut up me pretty easily.

Matz heads into this start tonight having lost six of his last seven decisions including four of five during the month of July. This is August thought and if he wanted to take anything positive from last month it is that his ERA for the month was only 3.19. This will be Matz’s second Subway Series start in his career, he beat these Yankees in September of 2015 but then again, who didn’t?

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network, ESPN, SNY and MLB TV. The Yankees have owned the Subway Series ever since Interleague Play made this a yearly occurrence and they have owned their small sample size against each other in the postseason so there is no reason the Yankees dominance cannot continue tonight in the Bronx. Go Yankees!

Subway Series Game Two Game Thread: New York Yankees @ New York Mets 8/2

The New York Yankees and the New York Mets face off for the second time this series and for the last time this season inside Citi Field tonight as the two clubs continue their annual Subway Series. In the second matchup the fans will be undoubtedly entertained by the All-Star worthy pitching matchup of Masahiro Tanaka for the Yankees versus Jacob DeGrom for the Mets. The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Citi Field and can be seen on the YES Network for the Yankees feed, WPIX Channel 11 for the Mets feed and MLB TV.

The Yankees return home to the Bronx tomorrow night to play host to these same New York Mets and Steven Matz and to see that matchup live click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog to secure your seats now. Also make sure the fans in the stands know just who you’re rooting for by getting a Jacoby Ellsbury milk carton shirt or any of the other great Yankees-related shirts on the site.

Subway Series Game Two Game Preview: New York Yankees @ New York Mets 8/2

The New York Yankees and the New York Mets will continue their annual Subway Series tonight with the finale game in Queens before shifting to the Bronx for the next two contests. Last night we watched as each team sent their fifth starters to the mound for the contest but today we get the treat of watching two aces go at it head-to-head as the New York Yankees send Masahiro Tanaka to the mount to face off against, and hit against unfortunately, Jacob DeGrom for the Mets. Make no mistake about it DeGrom can hit almost as well as he can pitch so there isn’t exactly eight batters and an easy out tonight for Tanaka by any means.

Tanaka was disappointing in his last start against the Houston Astros after giving up four runs in just five innings of work. Tanaka hasn’t been great against Houston this season in two starts but he has been much better in his two career starts against the Mets posting a 1-1 record with a 1.20 ERA. I’d take that ERA any day of the week and twice on Tuesday (since you know, today is Tuesday and all).

DeGrom has also faced the Yankees twice before in his career, the first time coming against Chase Whitley in a matchup of two young arms making their Major League debuts, and the last time coming April and these two starts couldn’t have been more different. In the first start DeGrom allowed just one run in seven innings of work while the second one resulted in just five innings and six runs allowed.

The game will be played at 7:10 pm ET inside Citi Field and can be seen locally for Yankees fans on the YES Network, locally on WPIX Channel 11 for Mets fans, and MLB TV no matter what your affiliation is. The Yankees may be in sell mode and fresh off selling many of their top players at the August 1st trading deadline but that doesn’t mean they still can’t beat up on the Mets for fun, right? Go Yankees!
