Chris Stewart Leaves Game With Dehydration

No I am not making this up Chris Stewart has left tonight's game with dehydration. In the era of Gatorade and team doctors in the clubhouse I cannot say I understand this, especially against the team we are chasing. Not a way to show your heart and dedication to your teammates Chris.

Chris Stewart Leaves Game With Mystery Injury

Chris Stewart left tonight's game between the fourth and fifth innings with an unknown injury or reason. As we all know Chris has been battling nagging groin injuries and he did take an at bat, a fly out, before leaving so that is the likely reason. Nothing appeared to be wrong with him coming off the field but I guess you never know. Stay tuned.

David Huff Clears Waivers & Outrighted To AAA

David Huff has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to AAA to play for the Scranton Wilkes Barre Railriders. Huff was claimed off waivers last week from the Cleveland Indians and made one appearance before being designated for assignment to make room for Joba Chamberlain. Huff creates even more of a log jam from the left side competing for possibly one bullpen spot with Clay Rapada and Cesar Cabral.

Game Thread BOS @ NYY 6/1

The Yankees snapped a five game losing streak last night against the Boston Red Sox and these same two teams will go head to head at the stadium tonight on FOX. I have to admit that I hate the dreaded Saturday games on FOX and really hate the late night Saturday games but what can you do about it but watch, right? Phil Hughes will be on the mound tonight looking to create another winning streak against Boston left hander Felix Doubront.

Here is the lineup the Yankees will send out tonight, looks familiar huh?

Brett Gardner CF
Kevin Youkilis DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Vernon Wells LF
Jayson Nix SS
David Adams 3B
Ichiro Suzuki RF

Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees 6/1

Welcome to June baseball where the season really gets going and the games really start counting. The Yankees are playing the Boston Red Sox who are currently both in a dog fight for first place. The Yankees will send Phil Hughes to the mound to face off with Felix Doubront in one of those evening Saturday games that everyone loves. The game will be televised at 7:05 pm ET on Fox and MLB TV.

Cesar Cabral To Rehab With Trenton Thunder

Cesar Cabral was take in the Rule 5 Draft last year and traded to the Yankees and almost made the team out of spring training before a micro fracture in his left pitching elbow ended his season. Cabral has worked his way all the way back and has been rehabbing with the High A Tampa Yankees. Now the the Kevin Youkilis and Mark Teixeira rehab assignments are done in Trenton it is now Cabral's turn for the Thunder. Cabral made four appearances with Tampa posting a 2.57 ERA in 7 IP allowing six hits and eight walks while striking out five batters.

Chien-Ming Wang Stays With The Yankees

Chien Ming Wang had multiple opt out clauses written into his minor league deal that he signed before the 2013 season and the date of one of them was yesterday. Wang has decided to remain with the Yankees even though six teams, including the Baltimore Orioles are reportedly interested in the right hander. Wang said he would only opt out if he could get a major league deal and obviously none of the six teams were willing to hand him a big league contract. Wang has put up a 2.65 ERA with a 4.1 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 in 51 innings for the Scranton Wilkes Barre Railriders.

Teixeira & Youkilis' return serves as a sign of urgency for Yankees

YankeesInjuredPlayersBaseball161418--415x415Publicized to incredible heights, Kevin Youkilis and Mark Teixeira were in the Yankees’ lineup last night as they opened up a three-game set with the Red Sox. After being swept by the Mets in a Subway Series where the offense never really posed a threat, re-acquiring [in a sense] two former All-Stars to bolster the middle of the order certainly is the biggest boost the Yanks will get all year.

Up until this week, the team had been excelling with the likes of Lyle Overbay, Vernon Wells, and Travis Hafner, but right now it appears they all are out of gas. The lineup’s struggles do not fall on their shoulders alone, but all three look lost at the plate and are shells of the .300 hitters they were for the month of April. Even Robinson Cano went through a cold streak, as he fell into the habit of trying to make contact with anything near the strike zone, which resulted in pop ups, ground outs, strike outs, and only the occasional bloop single.

Robbie did go 2 for 4 with a home run in Thursday night’s loss to the Mets, so he may be coming out of it. But the fact remains that he alone cannot carry the offense, and though the pitching has been solid the saying holds true that, “you can’t win if you can’t score.”

So unfortunately as we expected, the return of Tex and Youk can not just be a sight for sore eyes. These two sluggers must produce like they have in the past, otherwise the team could find itself battling it out with the Blue Jays in last place by the end of next week.

Maybe I’m over-exaggerating, but the upcoming schedule offers little time for the Yankees to struggle like they just did. As detailed the re-tooled Red Sox are at the top of the division and intend to stay there through the weekend, while next week Terry Francona will look to re-establish himself as a man no one wants to see in the opposing dugout when his Indians come for a visit. After that it’s off to the West Coast to battle it out with the Mariners, Athletics, and Angels - all of them improving and posing a real threat. Anything worse than a .500 record in those games and this joyful, miracle-like season could quickly turn to despair and doubt.

Am I saying Teixeira and Youkilis will decide our fate? Of course not. Robinson Cano needs to start hitting like he’s capable of doing, and Vernon Wells needs to stop hitting as he did with the Angels, as in, poorly. Overall, the Yankees have hit better than predicted, as they’ve scored just enough to win in numerous games. But now they aren’t, and it concerns me greatly.

Perhaps it's the simple fact that the replacement-level guys such as Overbay, Pronk, and Wells couldn't carry the team as much as we thought they could when everything was dandy in Yankeeland. Ultimately they were going to break down, and it looks like now is the time. Getting back Teixeira and Youkilis is a huge boost, but if that boost isn’t visible over the next two weeks, to paraphrase a baseball quote to fit this new month - “you can’t win a division in June, but you sure can lose one.”

This Day In Yankees History 6/1

On this day in 2009 the Yankees set a major league record by playing in their 18th consecutive games without committing an error. The streak would end on an errant throw by Jorge Posada trying to gun down a base stealer at second base.
