Game Thread: Red Sox @ Yankees 9/6

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox continue their series tonight at Yankees Stadium as both teams are vying for playoff spots and positioning this weekend. The pitching match up is Andy Pettitte for the Yankees and Felix Doubront for the Red Sox and it can be seen at 7:05 pm ET on the YES Network, MLB Network, and MLB TV. These two teams play a four game series this weekend and conveniently the only pitcher that the Yankees will not see is Ryan Dempster. Probably good news for Dempster because, not that Alex Rodriguez does not deserve some sort of punishment for his PED problems in the past, the Yankees fans and team take care of their own and like him or hate him Alex wears the same pinstripes across his heart as Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera do. The Yankees are still trying to chase down the Tampa Bay Rays as they are the last team to catch in this stellar run towards the post season for the Yankees so this is a very important series for both teams.

Here is the Yankees lineup:
Brett Gardner CF
Derek Jeter DH
Alfonso Soriano LF
Robinson Cano 2B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Vernon Wells RF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Mark Reynolds 1B
Chris Stewart C

New York Mets Could Be The New New York Yankees

According to ESPN New York's Mark Simon the New York Mets could become the new New York Yankees next season via free agency. According to his report the Mets could be interested in bidding for current Yankees player Curtis Granderson, Phil Hughes, and Joba Chamberlain. All three have proven that they can handle the New York market, well Joba hasn't proven he can handle anything but that goes without saying, so they are obvious targets for a Mets team that looks to retool and rebuild. All I have to say to our little brothers is good luck.

Shawn Kelley Triceps Injury Update

Shawn Kelley has been shut down at least through this weekend when the Yankees found triceps inflammation in his pitching arm. Kelley played catch today and is on track to throw a bullpen session as early as Sunday or early next week. Kelley told the Yankees that he felt the discomfort in his arm on Sunday, you know that Sunday he got knocked around allowing four runs, and has not been used since. Hopefully this week or so off is good for him because even with the extended rosters the Yankees need all hands on deck in that bullpen, especially strike out and base stranding king Shawn Kelley.

Yankees Call Up Matt Daley, Add Him To Bullpen

The New York Yankees have announced that they have given relief pitcher Matt Daley a September call up and made him available in the bullpen tonight. To make room on the 40 man roster Corban Joseph was added to the 60 day DL after his season ending shoulder injury. Daley has major league experience with the Colorado Rockies and has had a Mariano Rivera type season in AAA posting a 0.87 WHIP with 53 strike outs in 39 innings for the RailRiders.

Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees 9/6

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox continue their four game set this week and weekend at Yankees Stadium tonight in the second game of the series. The Yankees continue to inch towards a playoff spot while the Red Sox continue to keep a tight grip on first place of the American League East so this should be a fun series to watch. If the last series is any indication, the Ryan Dempster and Alex Rodriguez saga for those living under a rock, this should be yet another fun series. The Yankees will send Andy Pettitte to the mound who has put together a nice string of quality starts lately to face off with Felix Doubront for the Red Sox. The game will be televised at 7:05 pm ET on the YES Network, MLB Network, and MLB TV.

Yankees comeback, then blow lead in a real tough loss to the Red Sox, 9-8

Despite scoring six times in the seventh inning alone to take an 8-7 lead, the Yankees lost last night's series opener to the Red Sox in heartbreaking, 10-inning fashion, 9-8. The Bombers starter in this one, Ivan Nova, really was bad. He threw a ton of pitches, 96 to be exact, while lasting just four innings and giving up three earned runs. His successor, Preston Claiborne, wasn't any better, as he also gave up three earned runs without even getting an out. It's no secret to anyone, that had Claiborne pitched semi-well in his inning, this game would've been won. But I guess fate just didn't like the Pinstripes on this night.

The Yankees 8 runs in this one came on a two-run double from Cano, an RBI Single from Gardner, an RBI Groundout from Cano, an RBI Single from Soriano, an RBI Single from Granderson, and a two-sun single from Overbay. This loss was heartbreaking, and one that really stings.

Mo Unavailable, As Is DRob

Joe Girardi has said that, due to pitching three days in a row, Mariano Rivera is not available tonight. In case you thought David Robertson could get another save opportunity, it turns out that Joe said he's not available tonight either.

I'm not sure I believe the DRob part, as he's only thrown 1.1 innings in the last six days. But maybe David said his arm doesn't feel good, due to fatigue or whatever.

Either way, it would be nice if the Yankees could win this game by at least four runs. Perhaps Phil Hughes will make his first appearance out of the bullpen since losing his rotation spot to David Huff.

Minor League Deal Options For 2014: Roy Oswalt

Roy Oswalt seemed done entering his age 35 season in the Major Leagues coming off of another back injury but he still signed a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies giving it one more shot. Can lightning strike in the same place twice and this time the Yankees stash him in AAA until mid season? Will Oswalt sign with anybody for his age 36 season, let alone the Yankees? Why not?

The Yankees always seem to stash someone in the same situation as Oswalt every season, see Freddy Garcia, and Oswalt may be the most attractive choice for the Yankees this off season. The only thing getting in the way is whether Oswalt wants to continue playing or wants to finally hang up the cleats after putting up an ERA over five in two straight injury riddled seasons. If Oswalt wants to sign for 2014, even if he wants to take the first half of the season off, get this man in pinstripes. He could do wonders for the prospects down in Scranton and could really provide some veteran leadership in the major leagues if it comes to that next season.

The GIF That Should Cheer Up All Yankees Fans

Yes I know that we had a huge comeback yesterday only to see Mariano Rivera get one strike away before blowing a save but hear me out. It is hard to be mad when someone like Rivera blows a save, the guy has been so unhittable for so long he tends to get a pass. I know that does not make you feel much better when we lost the game that we had to have but if this GIF of Alex Rodriguez sliding into second base, I think that is what it's called anyway, then you're not human or you haven't had enough coffee this morning.

Shawn Kelley Has Triceps Inflammation

We may have the reason for Kelley's implosion the other day as we found out late last night that Shawn Kelley has been unavailable the last two or three days with triceps inflammation. There is no structural damage but the Yankees are being cautious and will probably hold him out for this weekend Red Sox series.

Thunder Take Game 2 with Later Double, 2-1

TRENTON, NJ - Thunder pitching retired 15 of the final 16 batters they faced which held the Binghamton Mets at-bay long enough for Ali Castillo's game-winning double in the 7th inning in Trenton's 2-1 win Thursday night.
After taking Game 1 of the Eastern Division Championship Series in dramatic fashion Wednesday, the Thunder responded with a two-hitter of the B-Mets in front of 2,877 at ARM & HAMMER Park.
With the ballgame tied 1-1 in the 7th inning, Trenton used a one out single by Mason Williams to begin their go-ahead rally. Reegie Corona was the next batter and lined-out to left field which brought Castillo to the plate. Castillo worked a full-count which put Williams in motion at first base. Castillo lined the offering by Binghamton starting pitcher Darin Gorski to right-centerfield and past centerfielder Darrell Ceciliani to the wall for a 2-1 lead.
Starting pitcher Mikey O'Brien got the no-decision but kept Trenton in the ballgame early. He allowed just one run on a solo home run by Binghamton's Josh Rodriguez to begin the fourth inning. Aside from that, O'Brien allowed just one other hit and struck out four.
Trenton leads the best-of-five series over the Binghamton Mets, 2-0.
Following their second-straight win to begin the series, the EDCS continues Friday with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Shane Greene (8-4, 3.18) pitches for the Thunder against RHP Logan Verrett (12-6, 4.25) for Binghamton. Tickets are available for 2 of the series by going towww.trentonthunder.com/tickets or by calling (609)394-3300. Radio coverage of Friday's game on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and coverage online begins at 6:45 p.m.

This Day In New York Yankees History 9/6

On this day in 1973 the Yankees got rid of both of the Alou brothers on the same day. Felipe Alou was sold to the Montreal Expos and Matty Alou was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.

On this day in 1981 Yankees owner George Steinbrenner fired manager Gene Michael in what he described as the "most agonizing" decision the Boss had ever made. This decision came after Michael made comments about his inability to tolerate Steinbrenner after constant threats of his dismissal. Bob Lemon would replace Michael and Gene would later become a Yankees General Manager.
