Zack Wheeler Checks A Lot of Boxes for the Yankees

Just because the New York Yankees are unlikely to acquire either right-handed starter Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard it doesn’t mean that the Yankees and the New York Mets don’t match up in a potential trade for pitching. Late in the week it was reported that the Yankees have been scouted and have some interest in another one of the Met’s right-handed starters, Zack Wheeler.

According to Andy Martino of SNY the Mets are asking for a “couple prospects” in return for Wheeler including one that is a Top-10 prospect in the Yankees system. I don’t have to list off the Yankees top 10 prospects to know that I don’t feel comfortable trading one of our Top 10 prospects for what basically equates to the Mets 3rd, 4th, or 5th starter (for the record MLB.com has him listed as the Mets 3rd starter currently and had him ranked 4th before Jason Vargas went down with an injury).

Wheeler checks a lot of boxes for the Yankees, none bigger than his team control and affordability. Wheeler is only making $1.9 million this season and the right-hander comes with a year of team control in 2019 as well before hitting free agency before the 2020 season.

Wheeler has been pitching well as of late after seeing his ERA balloon to 5.40 through the month of April only to see it drop to 3.44 as it stands at the time of this writing. Wheeler has been durable and effective and would be cost effective for any potential team that acquires him. I wouldn’t mind Wheeler in Pinstripes come August 1, 2018, but not at the price of a top 10 prospect though.

Stay tuned.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Cleveland Indians 7/14

The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians will be back at it again today inside Cleveland’s Progressive Field in the third of a four-game set between the two clubs. Thursday night we were entertained with a matchup of aces while the young guns took the mound for their respective teams last night. Tonight each team will take more of a veteran type mindset as the Yankees send CC Sabathia to the mound to face off with Mike Clevinger. CC against his old team and the team that drafted him once again, let’s get to it here inside Progressive Field.

Sabathia took the loss in his last start against the Baltimore Orioles after allowing five runs on seven hits including two home runs and will need to pitch much better tonight against a strong Cleveland offense. Sabathia is no stranger to pitching inside Progressive Field and has posted 123 career starts in Cleveland which is good for a 51-41 record and a 3.80 ERA.

Clevinger will also be looking to pitch much better tonight than he did in his last start after allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings of work against the Cincinnati Reds. Clevinger did strike out 11 batters in the start but was hit hard by the Reds offense. In Clevinger’s last ten starts the righty has posted a 4-4 record with a 3.88 ERA.

The game will be played at 7:15 pm ET inside Progressive Field in Cleveland and can be seen on FOX. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Enjoy the game, CC needs to pitch like the CC of old tonight for a victory and go Yankees!!

Hello… Camp Crystal Lake

Well, it looks like we survived another Friday the 13th. Well, at least those of us reading this that weren’t sitting out on Camp Crystal Lake last night. Anyway, another day and undoubtedly another full day of swirling rumors, trade proposals by the fans, and click baits by the writers, bloggers, and people who cover the team. Enjoy the day, and good morning.

Good morning beautiful. I love you.

This Day in New York Yankees History 7/14: Posada & Jeter Were Teammates a Long Time

We have all heard the stories about the Core Four and how Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada were teammates coming through the system and were teammates for a long time as members of the New York Yankees. On this day in 2011 the latter two, Jeter and Posada, appeared in their 1,660th regular season game as teammates, the most two players have been together in franchise history. Jeter and Posada entered the game as pinch hitters in the Yankees 16-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays passing Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri who held the previous team mark in 1937.

Also on this day in 1934 the Yankees got a little creative to keep Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak going in a game against the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees listed Gehrig as their leadoff batter and shortstop and after Gehrig singled in the top of the first he was replaced defensively at short. The streak continued, Gehrig rested his lumbago injury and the Yankees lost the game 12-11.

Finally it's worth mentioning that on this day in 2015 the first MLB All Star Game I ever watched without Derek Jeter took place. There's always that.
