CC Sabathia Checks Into Rehab, Will Miss Postseason

CC Sabathia will not pitch for the Yankees in the playoffs.

Whether you're happy about that due to his poor performance this season, or upset about it since he has an ERA of 2.17 in his past five starts, chances are you at least wonder how this happened.

I mean, it's not like Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi, to alleged "morons", would make this call. So
what did it?
“Today I am checking myself into an alcohol rehabilitation center to receive the professional care and assistance needed to treat my disease,” Sabathia said. “I love baseball and I love my teammates like brothers, and I am also fully aware that I am leaving at a time when we should all be coming together for one last push toward the World Series. It hurts me deeply to do this now, but I owe it to myself and to my family to get myself right.”
Other than looking forward to rejoining the Yankees next season, there was no further information given.

And now we have the entire offseason to talk about whether his alcoholism contributed to his poor pitching. Can't wait for that.

  1. I'm going to be the political incorrect prick and say that this is a selfish act of a weak man. I sincerely hope that he gets the help that he feels he needs, but quiting when your team may or may not need you the most due to self inflicted issues is no different then any one of us quiting his job. Period. I don't care what anybody else has to say about it. His contract should be terminated, just as I feel any other contract should be terminated for drug or alcohol abuse. Owners, teams, and most importantly fans, shouldn't have to pay the price because $20 million a year wasn't enough for your dumbass to put the bottle down.

    1. Can you truly be politically correct when you think your crap doesn't stink enough to post the same thing twice every time you're on the site?

On a serious note though you are entitled to your opinion just like anyone else and everyone else on here. Don't stifle them, can't stifle you. I don't necessarily agree with it but still.

The timing sucks, no one would argue that. We don't know all the circumstances and until or unless we've dealt with addiction of any kind you can't really throw the first stone (not to say you have or haven't Jeff because I don't know, just saying in general.

My dad struggled with addiction and he kept saying I want to go to rehab and would put it off and put it off long enough to go back on a binge for a few months, rinse repeat recycle. My dad lost his life to his addiction. If he had dropped everything he thought was important and made time for rehab he may be reading these words today. That's why I have no problem with CC dropping everything that we as fans find important and worrying about him, his lovely wife and his young children first and foremost.

    2. I am sorry to hear of your fathers addiction Daniel. That can't have been a pleasant time in your life.

I grew up with it all around me in Hells Kitchen, and what it does to one is not something I can live with! One of my sisters died of drugs.
My mind won't let me drink or anything else that is why I can't take pain pills. That makes me one lucky fellow because there have been times when it would have been welcome to just drop off the grid...like writing 67 letters to someone's relatives.

    3. I'm the same way Reed. I don't even take Tylenol for a headache. I thinks it's imprinted into my mind and I took it too far, lol, but that's my personality. If I am going to do something i am all in.

    1. Damn Jeff, don't hold back, tell us what you really think!

On this one I must agree, he quit on the team! Hell, Mickey was an Alcoholic but it never stopped him from playing and contrary to popular belif...he never played drunk.

    2. I am with Levin and Reed. Mantle and Martin were huge boozers but came ready to play day in day out. I want him to get help and applaud him for it, however he picked the wrong time to do it. If we could get out from under this contract I would, however I am sure in the contract it states you can't do so

    3. Different time, not to defend CC whatsoever. Men didn't admit weakness back in Billy and Mantle's era.

  3. IRISH PRAYER CANDLES....near my Coors Light. Here is how I see this one.
I have to get up at 3:30 tomorrow morning, so I will not see much of tonight's game.
I get up, when Dracula is heading home.

Tanaka pitches well, and keeps the Yankees close. Late home runs by McCain, and Beltran.
The Yankees bullpen shuts the door....theeeeeeeeee Yankees win !!

My candles have worked well in the past, and should have some mojo left in them.
We'll see. Good luck, and enjoy.

    1. Hell, Patrick, I go to bed around 0300 and I am up between 0530 and 0600. Only you young guys need sleep, the old guys only need a couple of hours...really it is because, we are not sure we will wake-up.
Get a good night's sleep, you have a 10/12 hour work day don't you?

The Yankees will win, I said so, therefore it is! Yeah, right!

    2. Sorry Reed I am the realest in this group and I don't believe they will win. This team ins not a playoff team and as it was mentioned by someone I'm not sure of that person's name but they made a good point that it basically gives ownership a false sense of being good. Just paraphrasing .

Girardi's lineup is putrid and they deserve to lose just on that lineup alone. I think they will be playing golf tomorrow unfortantely. We shall see

    3. Burch this team overachieved and if there was another week left in season they wouldn't have made the playoffs.

This team has more holes then Swiss cheese. We may have numerous pitchers and I will say it again there is no true number one unless Severino steps up next season.

I will say it again we needed another bat and arm and bat at deadline and we sat on our hands a 3.2 billion dollar business that acts like they are Kmart who is bankrupt.

I don't expect any major moves in off season do to money. The lineup tonight was disgusting. Girardi should be released for that alone. Ellsbury needed to be in lineup and Gatdner should've batted 9th of at all. Overall very disgusting this evening

    4. Honestly I agree with you. I've had my fill of Joe Girardi. His hunches and his binder and his ways just aren't working anymore and the team reflects his "whatever dude" type of managing.

    5. Ken H...Sarcasm was what I was writing. Hell, even a dumbass like me knows there was NO way this team was going to win.
Well, maybe I could have been right, they say an Ice age is coming, so maybe Hell would freeze over...oh, I forgot, they say it is Global Warming now.

  4. I think everyone knew we needed a good right-handed bat and a good arm...Ken H! Yah right, everyone except Hal, we had a good bat ready and Hal pulled the plug...thank you mister Toke a Joke!

2016 is a new year, so much can change before Feb/March.

    1. Again, where would you (at that time) put that big right handed bat? Besides second base, and there was no big second baseman at the deadline. I keep asking that question but I never seem to get an answer.

      Delete
    2. DH and I would have started to rest the OF. Gardner and Ellsbury were non existent the second half of the season. You keep asking where you would play him and the answer really is quite simple which is the rule of thumb is if you can hit they will find a place for you

      Delete
    3. My idea was to trade Brett for a right handed left fielder but, playing left field in Yankee Land is too big for most left fielders that can smoke the ball. Also, there were only a couple guys that were good enough not to hurt the team in the field as Beltran did many times.

      Delete
    4. Ken H...
You would have replaced A-Rod as the DH! At the deadline, he was still hitting well, of course, anyone could see he was guessing at pitches near the end of the season and tiered.

    5. WE should have had one of Mason Williams or Slade up and we could have rested both Brett and Ells more. High energy takes a toll on one sooner or later.

      Delete
    6. You wanted to bench your 2nd most productive hitter at the time to add a big bat at DH and fix the offense... And you don't see a problem with that logic Hans?

That's like all the people who want Headley gone to fix the offense. He struck a out a ton, he did when we got him so no surprise, but how does replacing the guy who led the team on hits fix the offense? You know?

      Delete
    7. And Reed,

The teams problem was offense, never defense. You sacrifice defense to keep Beltran's bat in the lineup. Gardner is great in left field but the team cannot afford to carry his bat in a premium power position unless and until they add more offense at second base or more power at third base.

      Delete
    8. Again the bat dictates playing time and your most productive bat as you state is 40 years old and dropped off severely. Your left fielder has a history of major drop-off the second half. Your best hitter at the time in RF is getting up there in age and is a liability in the field. Your third baseman also was a major disappointment especially down the stretch. We couldn't score runs we needed a bat

    9. By the way interesting article in the post today about Girardi and what Cashman said about how he managed the playoff game.

“He is signed for two more years and managed the team to the playoffs. It’s not his fault we didn’t hit. He managed a perfect playoff game.’’

I guess the elf doesn't look at the most important part of the game which was the line-up to start. Girardi managed scared the minute the Jays started to make there way towards first. If anyone thinks the line-up he put on the field was the right line-up please share with me as to why you feel that way?

    10. Daniel...
      I said nothing about replacing Beltran, what I did say was;

"WE should have had one of Mason Williams or Slade up and we could have rested both Brett and Ells more. High energy takes a toll on one sooner or later."

Cris Young would be gone so as to bring up one of the guys, that looked like the right move!

    11. Here is the Beltran quote I was referring to:

Also, there were only a couple guys that were good enough not to hurt the team in the field as Beltran did many times.

    12. I am sorry I didn't make it clear enough, my mistake!

What I was trying to say was the only LF good bats we could get were not going to help the defence at all just as Beltran didn't get too many balls that dropped in front of him!

  5. Reed as you and I agree on this topic and I have said numerous times that the Coupon Clipper will not take on salary and I have read on numerous other sites, this site of course being my favorite. There is a common thought process that the additions will be small as will the subtractions. If I have to watch Chris Young one more season. By the way Headley's contract is an albatross as well along with the usual suspects

    1. Can't see Young back with the team, not with Judge in Triple-A.

      Delete
    2. You think they will bring him up for next year? IF they do that will mean he plays in left field!
That means Brett is gone, right? We would need someone to rest the outfielders, can he play CF or would we have Slade for that job?

      Delete
    3. I think he starts out in AAA but eventually gets into the RF rotation. He has played CF in the minors so he could probably handle LF but he wouldn't be great at it.

There will be injuries to either Beltran or ARod next season, almost have to be at 41 and 39(I believe)

      Delete
    4. Well, if he comes up they would have to choose between he and Mason or Slade as the #3 outfielder if someone gets hurt. I would go with Mason or Slade over Judge only because of versatility alone. I think one of those three will go north with the team as #4 anyhow.

I still believe..."Speed Kills" even more now than ever before. Pitchers don't hold runners as well as they use to (on average).
I understand players play hurt but when one has a good backup play the backup please Joe!
