I write about it and the Yankees read and listen. You’re
welcome. On a more serious note though late last month I did discuss the
possibility and the desire for the Yankees to scout former Kansas City Royals
closer Greg Holland and this week that same exact news was released to the
fans.
On Monday the former World Series bound closer threw for
scouts in Scottsdale, Arizona and the New York Yankees were present for the
showcase. The Yankees need bullpen arms and late inning reliever specifically
in the worst way after trading away both Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller at
the trading deadline this summer and Holland would be a good start depending on
the type of contract he ultimately signs for.
You would think the Yankees would be more inclined than most
teams to guarantee money on a one-year deal as they have their eyes on getting
under the luxury tax threshold before 2018 which could be enticing for both
teams. A one-year deal with a high base salary could give Holland the
opportunity to showcase his health and allow him to build value for next year’s
free agent class that won’t include Aroldis Chapman, Kenley Jansen, Mark
Melancon and others. It also gives the Yankees a stop gap type player that they
can potentially trade in July if they are out of the playoff race again or even
offer a qualifying offer to after the season.
If Holland is healthy this is a win-win for the Yankees. If
he doesn’t succeed, designate him for assignment and move on. But if he does….
And if the Yankees can add Chapman along with him which has already been
rumored and discussed the Yankees just won the offseason.
I agree Daniel, again!
ReplyDeleteI would go for Chapman (so I changed my mind) also, with my same caveat of a 3/5 years and a reasonable price. IF room for Machado, get him also!
Guy's I'm all for spending money, especially when you are a $3.4 Billion dollar business, however I think its fair to say our owner doesn't really care about spending money, only about making it. I again see the FA market go by the wayside just like last year. This clown isn't spending any money and by the way Burch who do you think won that trade with the Marlins? Eovaldi will be non tendered and we have nothing from that trade to show. Miami has Prado and Phelps, two guys I would like to have back
ReplyDeleteIf you ask me today you have to say the Marlins. the trade is incomplete though. Eovaldi could be re-signed, extended and come back strong. German could be strong. It's still too early to tell.
DeletePeople are still debating the Pineda for Montero deal for whatever reason so it's too early to call this one. Doesn't look good for us though I admit.
MartÃn Prado, 32 year old super utility player that had his last very good year. Infielders age faster than outfielders and his defense shows his age. We don't need him...we have Refsnyder, much younger and power. Phelps not needed but would be nice to have had him. Life can't be lived on could have and would haves...work with what you have not what you don't have.

DeleteWe can't really say "We have Refsnyder" until Joe Girardi gets the stick out of his ass and let's him play.... Just my opinion :)
DeleteTrue, Daniel!
DeleteKip you are missing the point the point. We have nothing to show from the the trade. Second that trade put the wheels in motion for other trades that were unnecessary and had to be made because of the Prado trade. Third if you haven't noticed Refsnyder doesn't fit into their plans or he already would be starting. Prado could be over at third base instead of Headley and we would not have had to pay him his unworthy contract that is taking up valuable salary cap. Phelps in the bullpen or backend starter is better than CC or Cessa or Green for that matter.
ReplyDeletePhelps was and is a fine pitcher but Green and Chance Adams are good and younger...so let's see what comes up this season.
DeleteThis is based on projections alone so take it for what you will but David Phelps ceiling never projected as high as Chance Adams floor... Just saying.
DeleteAdams has a ceiling of a #2 starter and has a floor of being a spot starter and good reliever. I never saw anyone call David Phelps much more than that. And that's not a slap in the face, serviceable is serviceable, but to compare the two is a little silly in my opinion.
Now when Adams was a reliever only, yes. Adams is a starter now and he has excelled as a starter defying many of the odds.
Daniel...
DeleteJust trying not to be too critical of the comment of Ken H's. I do agree with you on Adams, in fact, you brought his name to my attention.
We have a few pitchers that could be very good...IF they step up and get one thing cooking...it is almost always just one thing keeping a guy down.
I agree with Hans for the most part. I think the trade looks terrible right now and we very much could use Prado right now. I just think it's too early to declare a winner and a loser though.
DeleteAnd I'm not as high on Phelps as he is. I did like Prado a lot though.
And I agree with you. There are a few hidden gems down there on the farm in the pitching department. Jordan Montgomery and Chance Adams are a couple, Brody Koerner is another I think we will be talking about like this next year around this time after he recovers and has some innings under his belt after his injury.
Good Luck on the fire down there, Daniel. Has to be tough on the family, Take good care and be smart, not dumb! When they say get out, that means GET THE HELL OUT! Loosing you, doesn't help the Boss and family.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I appreciate the kind words. They are getting it under control now, finally. Hopefully it isn't too little too late.
DeleteThe thing that made this so much worse was the decision at first to let it burn. They thought it would be good for the wilderness to burn up some of the underbrush and such. Then it didn't rain for close to two months now....
