Nuno, Leroux beat up in 14-inning loss to Rays

Vidal Nuno surrendered 4 earned runs in 4.2 innings and youngster Chris Leroux gave up another 5 in the top of the 14th tonight as the Yankees depressingly lost this series' opener to the Rays, 10-5. In those 4.2 frames, Nuno was overall solid, inducing two 1-2-3 innings in the first and third, but in the end a couple of walks, an unfair lost-in-the-sky triple from Evan Longoria, and a solo home run from Desmond Jennings caused the team to lose.

Anyway, the Bombers offense, judging by their 14 hits, was okay in this loss, collecting three home runs from Brian McCann (2-run), Mark Teixeira, and Alfonso Soriano before scoring for the final time in the bottom of the ninth when Jacoby Ellsbury singled home the tying run. Those two shots from Teixeira and Soriano, interestingly, came back-to-back in the eighth off TB's Joel Peralta, tying the game at 4.

Unfortunately, the good for the Pinstripes stopped there, as their offense stranded a combined 7 runners in the 11th, 12th, and 13th innings. In that last frame, the Yanks actually had the bases loaded with two outs, before Derek Jeter grounded out as part of his tough-to-watch, 0-for-7 performance.

  1. NEXT...out from behind the rotating doors !
So much for Chris Leroux. He spit the bit, as George would have said.
NEXT !!!....Alfredo Aceves. The Mexican Gangster. An experienced major league pitcher, who did
well during his time spent with the Yankees.
    The logical choice.

    1. I'm almost willing to put Aceves in the rotation at this point over Nuno and Chase Whitley in the bullpen over Leroux

    2. I like the idea of Ace in the rotation, I think he can still pitch well enough to give us a chance to win.

  2. Dellin, Adam Warren and D-Rob are out of sight! I don't remember a time I have ever seen the Yankees with 3 capable Closers at the same time. This could be a blessing, if used and not abused the right way.
The big thing is, not to use any of them for more than normal. With the three of them (about) equal, Joe can use the most rested one to close a game giving D-Rob a break he most likely will need this year.

    1. Shawn Kelley may be better than Warren, which gives you four capable closers. If we could find some long relief consistency we would be awesome. It's probably not a coincidence that Phelps goes into the rotation and the long relief section of the bullpen goes to hell./

  3. Alfredo Aceves...my memory is a bit clouded. May need help with this one.
My memory tells me Aceves pitched for the Yankees in 2009, or 2010...and did very well that first year.
The second year...not as good. Was he injured some where in that second season ?
Then, on to Boston. Why did the Yankees let him go ?

    1. Had a back injury that causes his bad season and the Yankees passed when he was a free agent. Came back with a good season for Boston.

  4. RIP...Chris Leroux.....Really, what did anyone expect ? This is his legacy :
    6 yrs. MLB....71.2 innings pitched. 87 hits. 35 walks. 6.03 ERA.
Joe Girardi knew what he was rolling out there last night, for the 14th. Turn the page.
