This Day in New York Yankees History 10/21: 4:51 World Series Game

On this day in 2000 the Yankees would beat the Mets in the longest World Series game ever played. The Yankees would beat the Mets 4-3 in a four hour and 51 minute game that went 12 innings. This also keeps the streak alive at 13 consecutive World Series games with a victory.

Also on this day in 1998 the Yankees completed a four game sweep of the San Diego Padres by winning 3-0. The Yankees would win their 24th World Series title in their storied history and the 125th win of the season with the regular and post season’s combined.

Finally on this day in 1976, older Yankees fan turn your heads here because you are not going to like this, the Yankees lost their fourth consecutive game getting swept in the World Series. The "Big Red Machine" proved to be too much for the Yankees team. The Reds would win 7-2 behind a two run home run and a three run home run from Johnny Bench.

  1. The years from 1963 to 1996 were 33 years of shame for the Yankees. They won 2 of 5 WS Gold Rings and that is why I say the Fans of today are spoiled!
Since 1996 to 2016 the team has made the playoffs every year other than 4 years,How many teams can point to that stat and beat it?
George spent a lot of $$$$$ and Farm Hands on some players that just couldn't cut it, well maybe I should say...as a winning team. In those years we did have many very good or star players and still the team sucked! Why? Very simple, the team was put together the wrong way!
George brought in a few (5/6) stares and the rest of the team was made up of what ever they could get by way of trades.
The farm system was devastated over those years by trading away our best for big names.
Now that the farm is producing some real talent we should only buy what we "Need, Not what we Want!
    (My Opinion only)

    2. And he really shouldn't this offseason unless it's on a closer. The free agent market is either old/older (Edwin Encarnacion) or they are marginal players looking to cash in big because of a weak market (Rich Hill).

Chapman/Jansen/Melancon or bust if you ask me as far as major acquisitions.

    3. agree Daniel. I said even if we get the top 4 potentially available players (free agent or trade)- cespedes, sale, encarnacion, and chapman- BEFORE even considering the pieces we would need to trade away- we still aren't the best team.
