Expect Heathcott and Campos Back, Maybe Huff

I was shocked a bit when I heard the news that the Yankees had non-tendered outfielder Slade Heathcott and pitchers Jose Campos and David Huff but history got me thinking that we may see Heathcott and Campos back in Yankees camp soon. In recent years the Yankees have done the same to third baseman David Adams and to some extent Nik Turley, Francisco Rondon and Corban Joseph to get them off the 40 man roster but still with the organization.

New York quickly brought these players back on minor league deals without the 40 man roster obligation presumably on some kind of verbal agreement. I can only speculate here that a similar issue is going on with Heathcott and Campos this season. Both players have often been injured and run very little risk of being claimed on waivers by other teams or picked up by other teams. Huff on the other hand could be doing the same but after a strong second half with the Yankees may be looking to latch on elsewhere.

Don’t panic Yankees fans all this means is the team has three more open 40 man roster spots and could have all three back in Spring Training or back with the team in some capacity in 2015.

Nik Turley Officially Back In The Fold

Yesterday we brought you the news that Nik Turley was close to re-signing with the New York Yankees after being released last week and today the move became official. Turley signed another minor league deal with the Yankees a la David Adams from 2013. Turley was released to clear a 40 man roster spot and came right back to the organization.

No word on how much longer he will rest and rehab his sore arm that has kept him out of all of spring training and the 2014 season to date. Stay tuned.

THE YES MEN: AN INTERVIEW WITH LOU DIPIETRO

Guess what! I was lucky enough to convince one of the YES men (named Lou DiPietro) to let me interview him about his AWESOME job. Any Yankee fan has to agree, working for the YES Network definitely has some perks! Ready to read about them...?! Here you go!

Me: Do you or do you not have the best job in the world working for the YES Network? I am going to go with you do have the best job...
Lou: Yes, of course I think I do! Seriously though, I get to pretty much watch and write about sports for a living, and as a lifelong Yankees fan, it’s especially a thrill to be working for their network and to have the kind of access that I do with the team. Same thing goes for things, like, say, this year’s Pinstripe Bowl, which lets me go to Yankee Stadium to watch a Notre Dame football game, which is an honor in and of itself.

Me: Being a big football guy do you follow the Temple University football team? Tough season this year.
Lou: Tough is an understatement! Yes, I do follow TU football, and men’s hoops as well. The four years I was in school (1997-2000 seasons) we won I think 11 games total, so  it’s not like I’m not used to it! But, it made the few years Al Golden was at the helm that much sweeter; even in the MAC, it was nice to see my alma mater succeed for a change.

Me: Are you like most who say that "fandom" goes out the window after a while or are you still a Yankees fan at heart?
Lou: Everyone is different, but for me, it hasn’t. Of course, you have to conduct yourself as a professional in public, and I will say that working in baseball has changed the way I watch a game, but that inner fan, the one that spent a night roaming the streets and bars of NYC in November 2009 so I could make sure I got a good spot on the Yankees parade route – is still there.

Me: If you had to choose... what would be your favorite encounter with an MLB baseball player (a Yankee or a player on another team)?
Lou: I’m not sure if I could pinpoint a specific moment, so I’ll say this: perhaps the best feeling is seeing a guy come up through the system and getting to know him from trips to spring training or a minor league park, then seeing him in the clubhouse at the Stadium and they remember you. Our whole team feels that it is important to start a good rapport with guys early, and that’s the payoff. David Adams is a great example of that, and that’s how we’ve been able to create great content like our long form features on Adams and Preston Claiborne – because we’ve known them for years.

Me: Being what you describe as a "native New Englander" how do you like working for a New York based operation?
Lou: I grew up in southwestern Connecticut and spent a lot of time in NYC as a child, so I’ve always been a New Englander by geography but a New Yorker at heart. I guess that means I like it?

Me: After working for the World Wrestling Entertainment brand do you consider it to be a sport, fake or not?
Lou: Even WWE brands it as sports-entertainment, so I’d have to say no. I believe that those guys and girls are great athletes on the whole and what they do has a very athletic element, but it’s no more a sport by definition than a snowball fight.

Me: How many baseball stadiums have you visited in your lifetime?
Lou: Counting ones that no longer exist 11: all four New York stadiums and both in Philadelphia, plus Tropicana Field, Joe Robbie Stadium, Comerica Park, Camden Yards, and Comiskey Park. I am one of many that has the dream of going to all 30 ballparks (or at least all 30 cities) in my lifetime, and that may end up becoming a reality in a little different capacity than I expected!

Me: What is your favorite sports moment?
Lou: Wow. I’d have to say it’s one of these three: watching the 1994 Rangers skate the Stanley Cup (because that was the first of my “teams” to win a championship), watching the 1996 Yankees win the World Series (first time my favorite team won a title), or watching the 2008 Phillies win the World Series at Citizens Bank Park (first time I ever saw a team win a title live). All three were awesome in their own way and in a completely different way.

Me: What are you're thoughts on the departure of Robinson Cano, the "disagreements" with Joe Girardi, and the general reasoning that has a ton of Yankees fans jumping off the cliff?
Lou: Robinson Cano has always been great with me personally and professionally, and he did what he felt was best for himself personally, so you can’t hate him for that – and if he really had issues with Joe, over batting second or anything else, then that’s his right to ply his trade elsewhere. I don’t agree with his statement that the Yankees didn’t show him respect, but again, that’s his opinion. As for Yankees fans jumping off a cliff…relax. Is a Kelly Johnson/Brian Roberts platoon at second base as good as Cano in theory? No, but with all the other improvements the Yankees have made, it could be perfectly fine. Remember, this is a team that turned scrap heap pickups like Scott Brosius into heroes. Let’s re-visit this in, say, 2020 when Cano is 37 and see how well he did in Seattle and how well the Yankees did without him.

Me: What are your day-to-day responsibilities like (during baseball season)? How are they different during the offseason?
Lou: My official title is content editor, and there is no such thing as a “typical” day in my world, so I always answer this question with this statement: My day-to-day responsibility is to react to my surroundings and create, gather, or facilitate content for our website in any way I need to.
Some days, I’m at the Stadium or Barclays Center, where my main function is the same as any other beat writer but I may be called upon to help our video team shoot something, or do some research for our production crew, or anything else the team needs. Some days I’m in the office, where I could be writing, or cropping photos, or collating four sets of picks for the This Week in Football yearly pick ‘em contest, or recording podcasts/helping create video content with Doug Williams. And some days I’m on location doing various things. Such is life.
During the Yankees offseason the chaos dies down a little bit as we switch our focus to the Nets or the NFL or other topics, but as this winter has already proven, there’s still plenty of Yankees-related activity to worry about!

Me: How did you get to where you are today?
Lou: A lot of hard work, a good bit of talent, and a little luck! My boss at YESNetwork.com was my boss at a previous job, and even though I wasn’t the easiest person to work with at times, he knew my capabilities and asked me to come to YES when an opportunity arose. There’s a good piece of life advice in there too: even if you hate where you are, always try to make a good impression with your work and never bite the hand that feeds, because you never know who is watching.

Me: We now live in a social media world. How important is it to you to interact with fans/readers?
Lou: Very! I always try to answer commenters on my articles or Twitter followers when and where I can. Obviously I won’t react to people who bash my work and there are some subjects I can’t or won’t discuss, but on the whole, I’m never averse to a good back and forth discussion or unwilling to answer questions/give opinions/etc. And, to me, it’s a trip that complete strangers actually care about what I say; I prefer to keep my private life private so I won’t ever necessarily open up my Facebook to people or anything (I might make exceptions), but if I put something out there in my “public” persona, it’s fair game.
Really, I think that in today’s world, that’s an important part of building trust with the fanbase. You’re not always going to be the one to break news, but if you build a rapport with your audience, it will be easier to keep eyes on your work no matter what.

Me: Do you think the Yankees have a legitimate shot, even as early as it is in the offseason, at the World Series in 2014?
Lou: Of course. They still have some holes, but they’ve made a lot of big improvements offensively, and have guys in the system who may not be sexy but are capable of being back-end rotation starters.

Me: I do not know if you read the blog much but Daniel Burch has made it his life's mission, and the blogs mission, to forgive all steroid users. What are your thoughts on steroid users, their chances for the Hall of Fame, and Alex Rodriguez specifically?
Lou: I know nothing more about any specific players, and won’t comment on A-Rod until/unless everything is known and his fate is decided. I think what MLB is doing with the joint drug agreement is good and a necessary step for the health of the game.

...I HAD TO INCLUDE THIS QUESTION (OBVIOUSLY)
Me: Is Andy Pettitte a starting pitcher?
Lou: Yes! And a darn good one, too!

Me: Who is your favorite Yankee fan? (There is only one right answer)
...I may have been fishing for compliments at this point
Lou: There’s this girl who follows me on Twitter that’s a very passionate fan, and she’s pretty cute, too, so I’d have to say her. Or Billy Crystal.

Me: Can I Pettitte?
Lou: If you ask nicely, maybe!

Follow him on twitter @LouDiPietroYES and maybe if you're nice (and lucky), he'll answer your questions too.

Yankees David Adams Signs With The Cleveland Indians

The Yankees non tendered infielder David Adams before the non tender deadline a few weeks ago with the hopes of signing him to another minor league deal but that thought line is now over. Adams signed a major league deal with the Cleveland Indians today ending his tenure with the team he was brought up with, the Yankees. Thanks for nothing Adams, signed Cliff Lee. I am being sarcastic obviously as I was a fan of Adams and wish he would have come back this year to provide more depth. Good luck in Cleveland sir!

Yankees Non Tender Nix, David Adams, & Matt Daley

The New York Yankees have announced that they will not tender a contract to utility player Jayson Nix, infielder David Adams, and pitcher Matt Daley. Nix was in line to make $1.4 million through arbitration as the others were going to make right around the league minimum so the money was not the issue as much as the roster spots were. I would expect the Yankees to try and work out minor league deals with all three of these guys before long to have them back in the fold for 2014. This drops the 40 man roster to 36 players and one of those open spots is for Brian McCann so is this a sign of whats to come? I hope so.

What I Am Thankful For: The Yankees Depth

Continuing our look at what we are thankful for we showcase the Yankees depth that is being addressed this offseason. The Yankees had no depth last year and it showed on the field and in the win column when half the team went down with injuries. This year the Yankees do not seem like they will be left flat footed if one or two of their infielders go down.

The Yankees have already traded for Dean Anna from the San Diego Padres who can play all over the infield and has played in the outfield as well. The Yankees also signed Yamaico Navarro who can also play the hot corner, short stop, and a few places out in the outfield. The Yankees have brought back Brendan Ryan and already have David Adams and Corban Joseph, among others, on the roster for back up. This is before we even mention guys like Jayson Nix and Eduardo Nunez who are both non tender candidates.

The Yankees have already brought back David Herndon for a shot at the bullpen and are not going to be quiet in the pitching department, whether it be for the starting rotation or the bullpen. The Yankees know they did not have the depth last year and they know they didn't have the impact type youth last year and this year they will not make the same mistake twice, and for that I am thankful.

All Home Grown Yankees Team - The Bench

Continuing with our look at the Yankees all home grown team over the last 20 years or so we look at the prospects who did not quite make the cut for the starting nine and have been sent to the bench. On this team this is not necessarily something that should make you feel slighted as the Yankees have been pretty successful in bringing guys through their system and turning them into stars over the last couple of decades.

Let's take a look at the Yankees bench they would send out with an all prospect team:

BN: Dioner Navarro
BN: David Adams
BN: Jimmy Paredes
BN: Jesus Montero

Dioner Navarro was signed as an amateur free agent by the New York Yankees back in 2000 and made it all the way to the major leagues in 2004. Navarro was sent to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005 with Javier Vazquez and Brad Halsey for Randy Johnson. The same day Navarro was sent packing to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Shawn Greene. Navarro has spent the rest of his career playing behind the dish for the Dodgers twice, the Tampa Bay Rays, Reds, and the Cubs.

David Adams was brought up and spent a huge chunk of the 2013 season playing with the big league New York Yankees. Adams spent most of his time at second base, and injured, in the minor league system before being primarily a third basemen this season. Adams also spent time at second base and first base this season making him my utility player for lack of a better word on this team.

The New York Yankees signed Jimmy Paredes as a amateur free agent as a short stop before the 2007 season. Jimmy spent the next three seasons in the Yankees system, including a minor league All Star appearance for the Staten Island Yankees before he was sent to the Houston Astros along with Mark Melancon for Lance Berkman. Paredes is now a jack of all trades making his major league debut for the Astros as a third basemen and now spending most of his time in right field.

Jesus Montero is one guy that I felt compelled to add as that last option on the bench. If this was a real team he would not be on the team obviously because he would give us two DH only types, unless you still think that he can catch for some reason, but this is pure nostalgia here. I can remember drooling over the thought of Baby Jesus in pinstripes ever since he was signed as an international free agent in 2006. Montero was traded to the Seattle Mariners for Michael Pineda before the 2012 season and has since lost his starting catching job, sent to the minors, and is now working out as a first basemen. I still love Montero so he gets the last spot and always had the last spot as soon as I came up with this idea.

Poll Results: Starting Third Basemen For 2014

On Thursday while everyone was out either trick or treating or eating their kids, brothers, families, etc candy we asked the readers who they wanted to be their starting third basemen in 2014 and the results are in. HERE is the original post and HERE is the results page. For all those wondering Alex Rodriguez was included on the poll and surprisingly he did not win but Mark Reynolds did with about 30% of the votes. David Adams got as many votes as Alex and Derek Jeter only got one vote less than A Rod, the Yankees fans have spoken.

Should The Yankees Bring In Paul Konerko?

The Chicago White Sox may have sealed the fate of Paul Konerko and his windy city career after signing first baseman Jose Dariel Abreu to a mega six year contract. That gives the Chi Sox a right handed option at first in Abreu and a left handed option in Adam Dunn, could that be the best news we have heard to date this offseason?

It is no secret that the Yankees want a right handed power option to spell Mark Teixeira a day or two a week next season, especially after missing most of 2013 with a wrist injury, and Konerko fits the mold. He is a veteran, which the Yankees love, he can hit for power, which we lacked in 2013, would likely sign a one year deal, which is ideal, wouldn't command much in salary by my speculation, see the $189 million luxury tax threshold, and is willing to accept a part time position to play at least one more year, sold!

Honestly I think Konerko is a White Sox player or he retires and we have absolutely no shot at him but it's worth kicking the tires on anyway. Konerko is coming off career lows as a regular with a .244/.313/.355 triple slash line after missing a month of the season due to a nagging back injury. Konerko does not help us get younger, he is currently 37 years old, and only hit 12 home runs last season but maybe a change of scenery can invigorate him and we can have a Raul Ibanez part two comeback.

Just to recap I am not advocating for Konerko. I think David Adams adds versatility with his ability to play first, second, and third base and is also a much cheaper option. Adams gets us younger, more flexible, and may shows some signs of hope for change around here. At the same time though, like I said, we should definitely kick the tires on this, doesn't hurt to right?

The Yankees Should Trade For Ryan Braun

Current Yankee, Former Yankee, Future Yankee?

Anyone who reads any Milwaukee Brewers blogs have seen the speculation that the Brewers could be trying to trade Ryan Braun this offseason after his steroid suspension from this season. Obviously there are a few hurdles that need to be cleared including Braun's  hefty contract that will, including a mutual option year, take him through the 2021 season, Braun's no trade clause, and his baggage upon baggage he brings. No one wants to take on a guy that is connected to the whole Biogenesis fall out, especially just a year or two removed from the "FedEx guy tampering with his sample" and getting a pass on one failed test already.

For the fun of reading and fandom let's just assume that the Yankees have the pieces to trade for Braun, who would have zero trade value just for the record, and that Ryan was willing to waive his no trade clause to New York. Let's also assume, again for simplicity sake, that the Yankees throw out the entire luxury tax threshold and the $189 million mandate and go all in for 2014 and beyond. Let's assume that George Steinbrenner is reincarnated into Hank and Hal Steinbrenner's balls and the Yankees ownership gives a shit about winning just one more time. Let's assume....

Ryan signed a 5 year contract extension before the 2012 season worth $105,000,000 with a mutual option for the 2021 season worth $15,000,000. Braun will be 38 years old when this contract runs out which is more encouraging then having a 42 year old Alex Rodriguez making big money in his final season in pinstripes. If I understand the new collective bargaining agreement the way I think I do, which could really be very little because you have to be a lawyer to understand that thing, Braun's AAV started being calculated in 2012 with the extension and everything before then is excluded. If this is the case Ryan will have an AAV of $15,833,333 for the next seven seasons. If they include the four seasons prior, which again I do not believe that they do even though it was an extension and not a new contract, his AAV drops down to $10,621,429.

Braun is a left fielder by nature but could easily play right field for a season with speedster Brett Gardner in center field covering a ton of ground. Braun's right handed bat could really stack and balance the lineup, even in Yankees Stadium, and would return us to our glory days of 200+ home runs a season. Also I think if any market in the world could handle having three previous steroid suspended players on the team in Braun, Alex Rodriguez, and Francisco Cervelli I think it is New York. Braun would likely take a back seat to the media circus anyway with the whole "Derek Jeter Effect" and would especially if Jeter decided to announce that 2014 was his final season. Braun also helps his own cause being a humble character, whether proactively or re-actively, as we all saw when Braun was calling season ticket holders apologizing for his steroid suspension.  Braun seems like a great clubhouse guy and would seemingly fit in the New York clubhouse.

The greatest part of this is, again assuming this trade even went down realistically, that Braun could be had for the low low price of Brett Marshall, Greg Bird, JR Murphy, David Adams, and Tommy Kahnle. I know it sounds like a ton but when you think about it it's really not. Milwaukee is rebuilding so they want young talent and controllable talent, plus we still have a bit of a 40 man roster crunch so it works for us too. We have to be "realistic" here and know that we are trading for premium talent, even clean as his would suggest, and cannot have him for nothing. We have to include Greg Bird, arguably a top five prospect of ours, and we have to include one of our catching trio of Murphy, Austin Romine, and Francisco Cervelli. Kahnle and Marshall do not seem to have a future in New York being way down on the totem pole and with both needing Rule 5 draft protection this winter it seems like the perfect time to get something for them. David Adams gets one more season of development in Milwaukee behind Aramis Ramirez before having to take over the full time role in 2015. This trade seems to help both teams achieve their respected goals, we compete in 2014 and beyond, and the Brewers continue to rebuild and retool.

Is this unrealistic? Hell yeah. Was it fun to think about a lineup of Gardner, Soriano, Cano, Braun, Teixeira, Rodriguez, Granderson(DH), Jeter, Cervelli?, Another hell yeah. Does a post like this popping up already mean something? Yes, unfortunately, it means this is going to be a looooong winter and off season. Keep dreaming Yankees family!

Yankees Haze Their Rookies Sunday

From left to right you have JR Murphy as Justin Bieber, Cesar Cabral as Rick James, Hiroki Kuroda's translator Jiwon Bang as Psy (Gangnam Style), Brett Marshall as Psy's sidekick in the video, David Adams as Vanilla Ice, and Preston Claiborne as Billy Ray Cyrus. Kind of disappointing not to see Miley here especially considering they did not even haze Austin Romine or Dellin Betances. They probably could not have found a fitting outfit for Dellin but Miley couldn't find one either on the VMA's so seems like a wasted opportunity but oh well.

Official New York Yankees September Call Ups

Here is the official September call up list on day one from the New York Yankees:

Preston Claiborne*
David Adams
Dellin Betances
JR Murphy
Brett Marshall
Cesar Cabral

Claiborne will be up tomorrow when the Tampa Yankees season ends. Claiborne will be in the bullpen for tomorrow nights game against the Chicago White Sox.

Predicting The New York Yankees September Call Ups

Welcome to September baseball where teams really begin their playoff pushes and rosters expand from 25 man rosters all the way to 40 man rosters. This is an exciting day for any prospect follower or "prospect humper" alike, myself included. Here is a list of the guys that I think the Yankees will call up to help with the playoff push and our mission to catch one of the wild card slots.

Dellin Betances has pitched his butt off since being converted into a relief pitcher. With Dellin out of options after this season the Yankees have a decision to make this coming off season and this may be Dealin' Dellin's first audition for the 2014 bullpen.

Preston Claiborne probably should not have been sent down when he was a few weeks back but Joba Chamberlain has pitched well since then so that makes the decision a little easier. Now with rosters expanding Claiborne should be the first man to get a call on Monday when the Tampa Yankees season is over.

Brett Marshall has pitched well lately down the stretch and does not look like he is headed to the playoffs so why not call him up. He could easily be a mop up man or just get a feeling for the majors and all that like Derek Jeter did in 1995. He is on the 40 man roster and not going to the playoffs so at this point I can't think of a good reason not to bring up Marshall.

David Adams has already been up with the Yankees a couple times this season and, excluding his explosion onto the scene, struggled mightily at the plate all year. Still I expect the Yankees to bring up Adams if anything for a late inning defensive replacement or pinch runner for guys like Alex Rodriguez.

Travis Hafner is standing in the background screaming "hey did you guys forget about me?" Well yeah, Travis, most of us did and for good reason. You have struggled at the plate for most of the season and even when you were hitting you never had the power numbers that we expected or signed you for. Still I can see us bringing him up as a left handed power bat off the bench if the shoulder is healthy.

JR Murphy has been a sight for sore eyes when it comes to productive Yankees positional prospects especially one who plays behind the dish. The Yankees seemingly have a love affair with calling up a third catcher for September and JR seems like the obvious choice. Also to add this may be the end of Chris Stewart because when the season is over Francisco Cervelli's suspension would be over and we would have four catchers on the 40 man roster and Stewart seems like the obvious choice to go.

Chris Bootcheck had a quick cup of coffee with the Yankees this season before clearing waivers and heading back down to the Scranton RailRiders where he will finish his season. Bootcheck pitched well in AAA as a starter posting a 10-7 record with a 3.69 ERA while striking out 97. With experience both in starting and as a reliever he could be the right handed compliment to David Huff that is currently on the roster. I was originally on the fence with Bootcheck only because I cannot see him fitting into the 2014 MLB Yankees plans and he would be a waste of a 40 man roster spot but I think the Yankees will go all in and try and make the playoffs this season and Bootcheck helps them do that.

Cesar Cabral has probably been the most forgotten Yankees pitcher stashed away in the minor leagues this system. As a quick update we all know that Cabral was claimed in the Rule 5 draft and almost made the Yankees bullpen in 2012 before a stress fracture in his left throwing elbow ended his 2012 and half of his 2013 season. When he came back and went through his rehab assignment he cleared waivers and was stashed in the minors where he has pitched to a combined 5.40 ERA with the Tampa Yankees, Trenton Thunder, and Scranton RailRiders. Obviously the stats are not as sexy as you would want them he could give the Yankees that second left handed option that they seemingly have fallen in love with the last two or three seasons. Also Cabral figures to at least be in the discussion for the 2014 bullpen with Boone Logan's impending free agency so this could serve as his first audition for that role.

Obviously the final three guys here in Murphy, Bootcheck, and Cabral are not on the 40 man roster and would require a roster move to be a Setpember call up but that may not be as hard to do as you would think. Vidal Nuno could be transferred to the 60 day DL retroactive to June 8th since he has hoped of rehabbing his groin injury and returning some time in September to the big leagues. Also Corban Joseph could be transferred to the 60 day DL as his season is over with a shoulder injury. Even with a roster crunch the Yankees have a little bit of wiggle room that they could work with to bring up the guys they need to complete this playoff push. It also doesn't hurt that Cabral and Murphy were probably going to get added to the 40 man roster before next season anyway.

Here's my list, what's yours?

Looking At The September Call Ups

September baseball is less than two weeks away where rosters expand from 25 man rosters to 40 man rosters. Everyone that is already on the 40 man roster is eligible to come up to the majors without a roster move or using a minor league option. If a player is not on the 40 man roster they can be added to the roster and come up but will not be eligible for the playoff roster if they have not made the roster before September 1st of this year. With that said let's look at the people on and off the 40 man roster that will probably be up within the first week of September.

Derek Jeter

I think he will be held out until September while rehabbing this latest leg injury not only to make sure he is healthy but to also save Eduardo Nunez or Jayson Nix from being designated for assignment.

Dellin Betances

Dellin got his feet wet with a couple strike outs, four runs given up, and a lengthy rain delay in his season debut. With Dellin already on the 40 man I can see him being a day one call up especially with Scranton's playoff hopes dwindling.

Preston Claiborne

Preston was sent down to make room for Mark Reynolds with the promise that he will be back on September 1st and he will be. He has earned his spot on the roster and in the bullpen and he will be there as soon as he can be without losing anybody.

Michael Pineda

At this point any kind of innings that Pineda can get is a step ahead for him in his 2014 season so why not call him up to the majors? If he gets his feet wet in mop up duty I cannot see the harm in it.

JR Murphy

Murphy is our best catcher not named Gary Sanchez in the system but the only problem is he is not on the 40 man roster. A roster move will need to be made to accommodate Murphy but that is as easy as a Corban Joseph transfer to the 60 day DL away.

Nik Turley

Nik is left handed and has a fresh arm and both of those are something that the Yankees are in need of this season. While Nik only has one appearance in AAA and has an ERA north of four while pitching for the Trenton Thunder but he is on the 40 man roster so why not.

David Adams

David has had a couple cups of coffee in the majors this season and while he has not had much success in the majors I can see him being a September call up. He is already on the 40 man and can give the Yanks some much needed depth at third base, second base, and first base.

Melky Mesa

Melky can play all three outfield positions and be a late inning base running replacement while already on the 40 man roster. This would be his second cup of coffee this season and while he is very strike out prone he looks to be the only outfielder we have to call up this September unless Zoilo Almonte gets healthy fast.

Dellin Betances Called Up, David Adams Sent Down

The Dellin Betances era in the Yankees bullpen may finally be starting as he has been called up from AAA Scranton Wilkes Barre from the RailRiders. The Yankees have a short bullpen since no one in the rotation can seemingly give the Yanks any distance these days so expect Betances to be the first guy out of the pen today if need be. David Adams has been sent down to AAA to make room on the 25 man roster for Betances. I cannot say I understand that as it would make much more sense to just DFA Joba Chamberlain but what do I know.

Derek Jeter To The DL & The Flurry Of Roster Moves

Derek Jeter has been placed on the 15 day DL for the 3rd time this season, retroactive to Friday August 2nd, with a grade 1 strain in his calf. With this move came a flurry of roster moves for the Yankees including activating Alex Rodriguez off of the 60 day disabled list, designating Brent Lillibridge for assignment, and calling up David Adams. Lillibridge getting the DFA cleared both a 25 and 40 man roster spot for A Rod and Adams came up to essentially replace Jeter.

I do not understand this as we could have simply added Corban Joseph, who is out with season ending shoulder surgery, to the 60 day DL and added Derek Jeter to the 15 day DL and have enough roster spots without losing anybody. We should have considered this especially since A Rod is playing on borrowed, and appealed, time with the Biogenesis suspension.

David Adams And Wife Added To Wives & Girlfriends

David Adams and his wife Camille Campins Adams have been added to the Yankees Wives & Girlfriends section of the site. He may not be able to hit on the field but he has proven that he can smash off the field, pun intended. Click HERE to see David and Camille in the Wives & Girlfriends section of the site.

Jayson Nix Activated, David Adams Back To The Minors

Reinforcements are on the way with Derek Jeter back in the fold and now Jayson Nix is headed back to the big leagues. Nix will be ready to play before the Dodgers series starting Tuesday and is officially activated. David Adams has been sent down to make room on the 25 man roster. As much as I like David Adams the kid has not hit a lick in the major leagues since busting onto the scene and the move just makes too much sense not to.

Luis Cruz Sent To DL, David Adams Called Up

Luis Cruz has been added, as expected, to the 15 day DL with what is being called a knee sprain. This morning we reported that it was an MCL injury so that report seems acurrate. To take his spot on the 25 man roster the Yankees have called up David Adams. Adams has been crushing AAA pitching so the call up seemed obviously, especially considering the fact that he is already on the 40 man roster. As bad as Adams has hit this year in the majors he is still an upgrade offensively over Luis Cruz. Defensively maybe not so much and definitely not in the versatility role but it is what it is at this point in the season.
