Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians 5/4

Good morning Yankees family and a very Happy Friday to you all. The New York Yankees head home tonight fresh off a hell of a road trip that saw the team dominate the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and more than hold their own against the defending champion Houston Astros. This team is heating up and is primed to make a run, a run that continues tonight in the Bronx against the Cleveland Indians. In the opener of the three-game set this weekend the Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound to face off with Josh Tomlin for the Indians. Let’s get to it in the Bronx.

Sabathia is looking for his third straight win since coming off the disabled list tonight as he opens up the series with the Yankees against the team that drafted him. Sabathia is 2-0 with a 0.52 ERA since coming off the disabled list in three starts allowing just one earned run in 17.1 innings of work over that span.

Tomlin on the other hand has struggled lately including his last start against the Seattle Mariners. In that start on Sunday the Indians right-hander allowed six runs on 10 hits including two home runs in six innings of work for Cleveland in a loss. Tomlin has allowed 10 home runs in 18.2 innings pitched this year and enters the Cathedral in the Bronx with a career 8.57 ERA in 21 innings pitched there throughout his career.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and can be seen on WPIX Channel 11. You can also follow along with the game on MLB TV, with the MLB At-Bat app and by tuning into the Yankees radio broadcast with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on WFAN.

Enjoy the game, too many damn home runs again tonight, and go Yankees!!

World Series Game Three Thread: Cleveland Indians @ Chicago Cubs

Here we go ladies and gentleman, Game Three of the 2016 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians. The Indians were not able to protect home-field advantage, not that this is a huge deal in Major League Baseball in my opinion, and head into Chicago for the next three games with the series tied at a win each. The Cubs will send Kyle Hendricks to the mound tonight looking to take the team to the next step in breaking the Curse of the Billy Goat while the Indians will look to break their own personal World Series drought with Josh Tomlin taking the mound looking for a victory. The game will be played at 8:08 pm ET and it can be seen on FOX.

Enjoy the game everyone!

World Series Game Three Preview: Cleveland Indians @ Chicago Cubs

It’s Game Three of the World Series already? Wow. The series began in Progressive Field in Cleveland and as the series shifts to Chicago for the next three games expect the crowds at Wrigley to be absolutely insane. The Cubbies, like the Indians, are three wins away from a World Series but this means so much more to Cubs fans I think. It means so much more to baseball too for the Cubs to win in my opinion but maybe that’s just the historian in me speaking. Anyway tonight the Cubs will send their Game Three starter Kyle Hendricks to the mound to square off against Josh Tomlin of the Indians.

Tomlin has two good starts already this postseason for the Indians and will look to deliver a third tonight in Chicago. All told Tomlin has allowed just three runs in 10.2 innings pitched this October for Cleveland.

Hendricks gave the Cubs a huge Game 6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers last time out and will start tonight looking to somehow improve on his 1.65 ERA in 16.1 innings this October. In that NLCS start Hendricks allowed just two hits in 7.1 innings pitched in the victory.

The game will be played at 8:08 pm ET inside Wrigley Field and can be seen on FOX. Good luck to both teams.

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians 8/5

The New York Yankees are set to kick off a three-game set here in a few minutes with the Cleveland Indians inside Yankee Stadium. These two teams met right before the All-Star break back before Andrew Miller was wearing a Cleveland Indians uniform and back when quite a few players around the league were wearing Yankees uniforms and the Yankees took three-of-four from the Indians in Cleveland leaving many to wonder if the team would buy rather than sell before the deadline. The team obviously sold and now they welcome those same, well not really the same I guess as they’ve improved some through trades, to the Bronx. In the first game of the three-game weekend set the Yankees will send Michael Pineda to the mound to square off with Josh Tomlin. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

See any of these games with the Indians live and catch Andrew Miller one last time in the Bronx this season by clicking the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog. Also be sure to grab a TGP T-shirt while you’re at it by clicking the link also located at the top of the blog.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians 8/5

The annual Subway Series is in the books for another year and now the Bronx Bombers remain home inside Yankee Stadium to play host to the team they beat up on to close out the first half of the 2016 season, the Cleveland Indians. Despite the Yankees selling off many of their expiring contracts, key bullpen pieces and their best hitter in the lineup New York has done well in spite of the roster gutting and has continued to put out more victories than losses leaving you to wonder if the youth movement that is sure to come could provide a spark to the team overall. The Yankees will find out tonight as they welcome the American League Central’s best team to town in the Indians. Michael Pineda will take the mound for New York as the Indians send Josh Tomlin to the mound to oppose him.

Pineda has actually never made a start against the Cleveland Indians in his career despite pitching his entire career for either the Yankees or the Seattle Mariners, both American League teams like the Cleveland Indians. Pineda had a rocky month of July where he gave up 15 runs in three starts but had two other starts where he allowed just one run in each of them. Which Pineda will we see tonight? I don’t think even he knows at this point.

Tomlin heads into this start against the Yankees fresh off a dominating performance against the Oakland Athletics last time out. In that start Tomlin threw seven innings of two-run ball to snag a victory and improve his July record to 2-2 and his July ERA to 3.73 in five starts.

The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET inside Yankee Stadium and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV. This is a totally different Yankees squad than the team that took three-of-four from Cleveland to close out the first half but the team is still playing some of their best baseball they have played all season long. While Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller are gone Adam Warren and Tyler Clippard have stepped right in and done well while Gary Sanchez has shown the Yankees thus far why they call him EL Gary Sanchez. I feel good about this series and I don’t know why. I’m an eternal optimist, sue me. Go Yankees!

Game Thread: New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians 8/20

The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians begin a big four game series tonight with the Indians looking to play the role of spoiler and the Yankees looking to hold onto the top spot in the American League East Division. The Yankees will send Ivan Nova to the mound looking for another good start while the Indians send Josh Tomlin to the mound to oppose him. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

The HOPE Week is almost over and the home-stand inside Yankee Stadium is well on its way to being over so be sure to click the Yankees Tickets link at the top of the blog and grab a pair of tickets while you still can. Also be sure to jump on twitter and give us a follow @GreedyStripes to interact with us during each and every Yankees contest.

Nova is ready to put the doubts behind him after taking a comebacker off his ring finger and I am ready to watch it. Go Yankees!

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians 8/20

The New York Yankees begin a huge four game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight after a nice series victory over the Minnesota Twins earlier in the week. New York trailed basically the entire series against the Twins but continually found ways to win the ballgame showing the character of a playoff team and the character of potential World Series winner, you can never count this team out of a game. That bodes well for tonight as the Yankees send Ivan Nova to the mound to face off against Chris Tomlin for the Indians. The game will be played at 7:05 pm ET and can be seen on the YES Network and MLB TV.

  • Nova has looked sharp in his last three starts or so but I am curious to see how he will react after taking a come-backer off his right ring finger last time out. Nova stayed in the game and finished off seven innings against the Blue Jays in a Yankees victory but I'm curious to see how he reacts when he doesn't have that adrenaline pumping through his veins.

  • Tomlin is set to make his second start of the season tonight in the Bronx after missing the first three months of the season with a shoulder injury. Tomlin struck out five batters in his first start while pitching 6.1 innings against the Minnesota Twins.

Cleveland has been a thorn in the side of the Yankees over the past three or four years. No matter what the Indians record is, much like no matter what Jose Ramirez is sporting in his batting average line, they tend to bring their "A" game against New York. We won't even mention Michael Brantley... true Yankee killer. This has all the makings of a tough series, especially after the Indians took the series last week in Cleveland. It begins to turn around today, Go Yankees!

Recap: Yankees 4, Twins 3

Greg Bird hit a pair of two-run homers and the Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Twins,
4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Bird is the Word: The surging rookie clubbed a no-doubter to right in the fourth to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead, but perhaps his best highlight of the day came later on. Facing Ervin Santana with the Yanks trailing 3-2 in the sixth, Bird lined another one into the New York bullpen to re-take the advantage -- earning himself a curtain call and unsurprisingly upsetting the Twins' starter.

Lucky Number 13: It might be hard to believe considering he had just 15 in his career prior to the season, but Nathan Eovaldi's win count has reached a baker's dozen. Not in a spectacular way, admittedly -- Eovaldi yielded three earned runs on four hits over seven innings -- but as usual, the righty was good enough.

A Couple of Costly Mistakes: In fact, Eovaldi was perfect through 16 batters, but his chance for a gem disappeared after a rough top of the sixth. Eovaldi walked two and allowed each of the Twins' three runs in that frame, Joe Mauer and Trevor Plouffe having done damage with a two-run single and a bases-loaded infield knock, respectively.

More Help From the Bullpen: Eovaldi's one bad inning indeed made things interesting, but truthfully, the Yankees were still heavy favorites once their bullpen entered the contest. Granted, the team was without two of its better arms in Andrew Miller and Justin Wilson, but with Chasen Shreve and Dellin Betances ready to go instead, the Yankees were nonetheless able to get the final six outs.

That's a lot of K's: Speaking of Betances, how many strikeouts do you think he has right now? 80? 90? Nope, try 101. That's just 34 off his total from last year, and we're only in mid-August.

Next Up: The Yankees will look to continue riding high when they kickoff a home series with the Indians on Thursday night, sending the confident Ivan Nova (5-4, 3.57 ERA) to the mound versus Cleveland's Josh Tomlin (0-1, 2.84 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET, with YES and WFAN calling the action.

Teixeira Homers Twice In 14-Inning Win Over Indians

While the Yankees' offense has struggled to hit home runs so far this season, you can't deny that they still have potential.

The veteran lineup, which includes names such as Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann, and Mark Teixeira, has gone deep just 76 times so far in 2014, tied for ninth in the American League.

Despite that, the somewhat-inappropriately named Bombers were crushing balls pretty often tonight in Cleveland, clearing the wall three times in a 14-inning, 5-4 win over the Indians.

To start off the unusual night of power, Teixeira knocked an offering from Tribe Starter Josh Tomlin (7 IP, 4 ER) into the right field stands in the top of the fourth, followed later by a sac fly from McCann and another, two-run shot from Teix in the fifth, his team-leading 17th of the year.

That second drive from the Yanks' first basemen also completed a 3-0 comeback for the Pinstripes, a deficit created in the first when an error by #25 led to a trio of unearned runs, originally appearing to put Brandon McCarthy in an escapable hole.

Fortunetaly, that wouldn't be the case for the newest Yankee, who ended up lasting 6 2/3 frames while allowing just one earned trip around the bases, a scoring that came in the bottom of the aforementioned fifth.

Strangely, that single crossing of home ended up being crucial in how the contest played out, with neither team breaking the tie from innings 6-13.

Sure, in the tenth, both sides did get men to third, but thanks to heroics from Cody Allen and Shawn Kelley nobody was able to collect the final 90 feet, keeping things even in until the top of the 14th.

In that frame, with two outs and an 0-2 count, New York's Jacoby Ellsbury homered off Vinnie Pestano, finally giving his club an advantage and eventually rewarding Chase Whitley, who retired six of the seven men he faced in the twelfth and thirteenth, with a win, thanks largely in part to David Robertson shutting out the Indians in their last chance.

In other words, this one started badly, got better, and finished perfectly, helping the Yanks pick up games on both the Mariners and Orioles in the Wild Card and divisional standings.
