This Day In New York Yankees History 10/23

On this day in 1995 the Yankees hired a new GM, replacing Gene Michael, in former Astros GM Bob Watson. Watson would only last two years in the Bronx before the Brian Cashman regime started after being upset with the "chain of command" in the Yankees organization, I think that probably means George Steinbrenner. Watson would be the GM when the Yankees would win their first World Series in 1978 when they were crowned the 1996 champions.

On this day in 1996 David Cone shut down the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of the 1996 World Series with the Yankees down two games to none. This would be the first of 14 consecutive World Series games victories for the Yankees before the New York Mets ended the streak in the 2000 Subway World Series.

The "chain of command" Watson meant was the "Tampa Cabal" headed by Randy. Randy is the President of Baseball Operations, he is the guy that works out the finial $$$$$ etc., of contracts...Bookkeeper! The thing is, he has always had the Kings ear...except when "Stick" was running the show.
Randy thinks he knows more than anyone around, about the players and who would fit or need...hence, all those over the hill stars over "oh, so many years"! Contracts such as A-Rods, Tex and CCs' were contracts that wouldn't have been made if...the "Bookkeeper had done his job and work on the books and not sell "Dumb and dumber" on those contracts!

This is my understanding of how things got so messed up, too much interference from the "Button down crowd". Reading what is and isn't said by Cashman and Oppy, I have come to that conclusion over the years!

    1. Hmm I didn't know that, good to know. After you hear all the horror stories about George I guess you just kind of assume the worst lol.

    2. Daniel...
The only guy that could handle "The King" was "Stick", because George had so much confidence in him. Heck, when George was suspended he had "Stick" running the Baseball Operations for him. That is when he started work on the minor league system with Cashman. Watson took over and didn't like the Mafia in Tampa second guessing and getting in his way. When he quit both he and Stick told Cashman to keep after the Farm System etc.!
Trouble was, the Mafia kept getting in his way by trading away the talent and wasting our draft picks on a player because of his history...history, being the key word.
The 2nd to last contract he got, he siad he was ready to go elsewhere if he didn't have full control as a GM. That lasted about 3 years, until George got sick, then it was...we're back, "Tampa Cabal"!
There are true horror storys of George but, one that is little known is...He always had the back of those he trusted...Note: the list of those people, was very short indeed!

    3. I started to say sure he probably had the backs of everyone he trusted but just how many ppl did he trust. And what did you have to do to gain his trust Win World Series I guess. He didnt trust Joe Torre, he bashed Joe Torre, he tried to replace Joe Torre before he managed a game. He ended up trusting him for about 10 years.

    4. Steinbrenner was a bully, lunatic owner who is lucky he had brilliant Finance minds in his organization like Randy Levine who proposed the Yes channel.

CashMan has been a miserable GM. Gene Michael and Watson built the 90's championship teams and the YES money that got AJ,CC,Aroid And Tex along with Michael's core four won in 2009.

    5. George once fired his secretary for getting him the wrong lunch sandwich. Classy guy.

    6. Mickey once closed the bus window on a 6 year old trying to get his autograph. Classy.

    7. I agree that George was a bulky and a lunatic. Me being born I the mid 80's I really missed a lot of it, probably most of it, but it is all really accessible on the net. Hell what's scary is half of it probably never ended up in the news.

    8. I know your gonna jump all over me and take what I saying the wrong way here but just hear me out a minute.

Do you think, and I am really asking and I do not have a alternate motive or smart ass comment to follow, Jeter is really the guy he is in front of the cameras?

The reason I ask is because mantle, Ruth, etc they could drink and do all nighters and go play and nobody even know or dare say anything. Now in the world of instant information, TMZ, the Internet, etc Jeter almost has to be the poster child. Mantle could be himself because, and even if he was an asshole he could hit the hell out of the ball and that's what he was paid to do. Jeter is paid to be the poster child for the Yankees brand, not just the team.

Different game now and different world. Everything is so politicized today.

Not saying Jeter is a dick and I am not saying mantle should get a pass either. Just something to think about

    9. I can agree with what you said 100%. I have tried to point that out a time or twenty but, alas...

    10. Worst part is we will never know the truth

    11. Daniel....your hypothesis is way off base again. Jeter is not being paid to be a poster boy and that is why he acts the way he does in front of the cameras. From all accounts from EVERYONE who knows him ...friends, acquantices, peers, coaches, mgrs, bat boys..... that is who he is ..... a great guy who was raised well by two parents who were educators.

Jeter became poster boy because of WHO he is...a classy, genuine guy......he wasnt given the moniker and had to become it. Anyone who has watched his career on and off the field...should know this. If there were skeletons in the closet TMZ would have brought them out by now.
See Aroids and Mantles closet ......there full of empty beer cans, hookers g-strings, drugs...

    12. Like I said I was really asking because I did not know, I have never met the man. So I was not way off base when I was simply asking a question. But, and maybe its the conspiracy theorist in me, if the point could be made that Jeter acts like a saint in front of the cameras how do we know the people who are being asked are not doing the same thing? I'm sorry but unless you have Jeter's mother on her death bed saying he is a saint or you personally know him and help him pick out gift baskets then there is no way you could say I was wrong and be 100% correct.

    13. Of course, there is a chance that Jeter is the greatest actor in the history of celebrity....and he has bribed all those that have ever known him ...... give me a break.....

PS.....Jeters gift baskets include autographed pictures of OldYankee in his camouflage outfit.

    14. I dont think I ever said he bribed anyone so I dont see where the hostile "give me a break" came from. I am simply saying that we do not know. The only way two people can keep a secret forever is if one of them are dead but you can get away with shit for a looooooooong time.

    1. I am on the list of people anxiously awaiting the debut of the Candleman and offer any help or service to help and expedite the debut. He has my personal email if he needs it :)

Matt is here he is just busy, I spoke with him yesterday. He is working on a article that should be here soon.

Delia was here but now she is the head writer elsewhere so I don't see her making any more appearances here unfortunately. We love you though Delia and wish you nothing but the best!

Michael is set up here to go but much like the Candleman we have to simply wait for his debut anxiously.

    2. Daniel.....you may want to try to recruit a writer named FishJam from YFU..... he and Candleman would make excellent additions to your writing staff.

    3. That, I can agree on. He is very good!
I will not write about Jeter again if he will come over to the dark err, the light side of blogs!

Fish, is very good and knowledgeable, I am sort of envious of him. He explains what I am trying to say because "I ain't got no learnin's"! Thank the gods, he was there to bail my butt out a few times.
Anyhow, I shall now go back to Dave Brubeck s "Take Five" and hear real music today...bye!

    4. He was asked when the merger happened and he didnt, he was bitter apparently. Does anyone have a way to get in contact with him? I have no problem trying to send him an email or something. I want Fishjam here...

    8. Well of course I would not want to blindsidef fish. If you wouldn't mind acting like a middle man much like you did with Candleman I would be forever indebted.
