Nova somewhat solid; Banuelos terrible in Yanks win over Astros

Ivan Nova gave up 3 earned runs (8 hits) in 4 innings of work today as the Yankees beat the Astros in a very competetive contest, 9-6. Throughout his first two innings this afternoon, Nova couldn't buy an out, giving up all 3 runs and 6 of those 8 hits, but in his last couple frames he seemed to turn things around, making his overall outing, as it says in the title, somewhat solid.

After #47 left this one, left-handed pitching prospect Manny Banuelos came in for his spring debut, giving up a double, a walk, and a home run to the first three guys he faced. After that disaster, he did get the next two batters (the last two batters) he faced out, but still, the damage had been done. He had been terrible.

Anyway, the Yankees, as you can see by that score, did still end up winning this game thanks to a nice offensive day, which included an RBI Double from Mason Williams, a two-run home run from Kelly Johnson, and an RBI Single from Brett Gardner. So yea, the pitching this afternoon was overall bad, but the offense was still pretty good. I guess that evens things out.

  1. What's the easiest pitch to hit, provided that it isn't thrown at a speed well above average?

    Fastball.

What pitch did Banuelos mainly throw?

    Fastball.

    I rest my case.

    1. BTW, this was his first time out since before TJS, and he was hitting 92-94 according to one scout. That's a pretty darn good sign for him, and his ability to bounce back... at least physically.

    2. Agreed, he did not throw a single changeup, by design. The changeup is his best pitch. Not worried.

  3. MANNY BANUELOS....have to walk, before you can run. Very happy for him.
So, he got slapped around. He'll get over it. Always liked this guy.
His time will come. Much like Francisco Cervelli's time is now.

Swiped these words from LOHUD tonight :

" After the triumphant return of Michael Pineda last night, the Banuelos spring debut was surely a let down. Except, you couldn’t find anyone in the Yankees clubhouse to put it that way.

“It was awesome,” Banuelos said. “I just got the great feelings and all. I almost forgot that. Now I’m just happy.”

Good for him. Next time will be better !

  5. Can't run me off that easily. None of what was said was true. Just took a trip down to Phoenix to watch a few ball games. I might have to apologize about Bonifacio though. Saw the Cubs and Reds today and he looked pretty good.

    1. Good man Jeff...
What pray tell, did you find out watching the game, and what about Bonifacio?

    2. What I found out about this game is that Bonifacio plays a pretty good shortstop and has a ton of hustle.(legged out a triple today) Also, really wish we would have signed Schuerholz last offseason instead of Ichiro.
