On this day in 1903 the New York Highlanders, later to be named the New York Yankees, play in their first game of the franchises history. The Highlanders and Jack Chesbro would take the loss 3-1 to the Washington Senators. Chesbro finished the season 21-15 with a 2.77 ERA so he didn't let the loss linger too much.
On this day in 1915 the New York Yankees uniforms will feature pinstripes. The Yankees abandoned the pinstripes in 1913 and 1914 before coming back to the fashion statement full time in 1915.
On this day in 1959 Whitey Ford tied the Yankees franchise record for strikeouts in a game with 15, although Whitey had the luxury of extra innings. Ford matched Bob Shawkey's 15 K's in 1919 in a 1-0 victory in 14 innings over the Washington Senators.
On this day in 2010 the Yankees turned their first triple play in 42 seasons when Alex Rodriguez stepped on third base to start a 5-4-3 around the horn triple play against the Oakland Athletics. CC Sabathia was on the mound in the 4-2 loss at Oakland.
