ESPN New York's Pros and Cons of Signing Hanley Ramirez

ESPN New York's Wallace Matthews has released his pros and cons for the Yankees possibly signing Shortstop Hanley Ramirez this offseason.

Ramirez, who's spent the last two and a half years with the Dodgers, is set to become a free agent this winter. At the relatively young age of 30, he is considered by some to be a possible successor to Derek Jeter, who retired last month after two decades with the team.

"By the numbers, Ramirez, even by the diminished standards of his 2014 season, would have led the Yankees in on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS, been one tick behind Ichiro Suzuki for highest batting average and run second to Brian McCann in RBIs," Matthews' pros read.

Mattews opined that those facts probably say more about the Yankees' offense than Ramirez's talents, but that the latter would still help them out.

As for the cons, Matthews mentioned the veteran's injury history, which goes back to his days as a Marlin.

"Injuries have shortened three of Ramirez's past four seasons, causing his production to plummet," he wrote. "Alas, his age is not plummeting, and if the Yankees balked at giving a 30-year-old Cano a 10-year deal, why would they lock themselves up with Ramirez for at least five years?"

Matthews eventually concluded his piece by saying the Yankees should pass on Ramirez, claiming that acquiring him wouldn't work well in the long run. According to Matthews, younger, cheaper options are currently out there, and that the Yanks would be smart to wait for one.

    1. Shame on you Daniel! Now that was a player that was or should have been an icon for the baseball would. Too bad he had to play for the Yanks when others were the big names in town.

    2. Ya he definitely played second fiddle to Mickey Mantle (from what I could tell, I obviously wasn't alive). I would have went if I had known, I am kicking myself.

    3. Bobby was the glue that held that team together and the WS he had was outstanding. In his last WS his line was BA-.406, OBP-.406, Slg.-.469, TB-15. Not bad for a player, even in today's game.

  2. And, no thank you for Hanley Ramirez becoming a Yankee!

    1. Hanley is definitely one of the few guys that change the entire dynamic of this offense. He could play SS in 2015 and 3B for the remainder of his career. I wouldn't be against it but I am not going to light any patrick candles either, you know?

    2. My problem with him is, the contract he will want and his history of injuries. We already have enough of those.
I say trade for one of the younger guns out there, I think there are four or five kids that will do the job just fine, IF given the chance and are already highly rated...Cubs/Diamon Backs even Texas (or was it a 2nd baseman) I think!

  3. Jeter was the Face of Baseball, no doubt about it, but Mickey owned New York when he played. He had so much respect even from other players and pitchers that the pitchers wouldn't even pitch him low and in for fear of hurting his legs. The players on the team always said, "If he can play the way he does with all the wrappings on his body, I can play with a sore foot!"
Did you know he broke his leg once in May and was back playing again in July...with a lot more tape!

  4. MERCENARY....at #4, he puts up more posts, than all the rest combined.
    I'll stand down, and he's # 3.

Tonight we welcome, from Staten Island, N Y......Andrew DeClerk.
The big exchanges today, were in re: to Giancarlo Stanton, and his worth.
Lets listen in, as Andrew puts in his two cents.......

"Stanton would make them a championship caliber team, provided a decent defensive SS and 3B."

Bravo ! Bravo ! Nice work Andrew.

  5. We need more than Stanton. We had Cano in 2013 and he almost drew 80 walks, his career high by a lot.

  6. Reed:

Cubs have Addison Russell with seemingly no position to play him but it doesn't seem smart for them to trade him yet. Especially since they just gave Samardzija up for him. Russell is the worst defensive shortstop of their little core of Castro, Baez, and Alcantara.

Arizona seemingly has to trade one of Didi Gregorious and the Ownings kid that I am drawing a blank on his first name.

    1. Chris is the name.
      Arizona also has Ahmed.
Hopefully, the Yankees make deals, not go after tendered Free Agents.

  7. Yes Chris Ownings! And I didn't consider Ahmed because (at last check) he was still a year or two away being considered for the majors, even on Arizona.

  8. Gotta go, must get back to my project for the good guys. IF I could just get them to understand, PC has no place in this kind of work, I'd be a happy man!
Oh yeah, and the Yankees go all the way next year! Hell, I think the first is more attainable than the latter! LOL
