The immortal words of new Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner and
how true that statement turned out to be. Hank, part owner with his brother Hal
Steinbrenner, made the comment “sarcastically” but the Detroit Tigers Triple-A
affiliate wasted no time in taking advantage of it. On this day in 2007, a day
after Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract during Game 4 of the World
Series, the Tigers minor league affiliate offered Alex a contract.
The deal was obviously a minor league deal that included
incentives for hitting 75 home runs in 2008. The deal also included an
incentive for leading the Tigers to ten consecutive International League
titles. If only he had taken that contract, right? He’s back either way but
it’s still fun to think of what could have been now that we’re in the
offseason.
